Ted Johnson: “Mac maybe saved Bill’s legacy”

As tough as it is to hear, I don't think he's wrong. If the Patriots don't draft Mac at 15 it's hard to imagine they'd be on the same trajectory. BB has obviously long since earned his Hall of Famer status, but if the Pats continue(d) to have several seasons like last year it would diminish his legacy some.
The problem with this take is... Mac would be replaced by any competent QB that the Patriots brought in... Cam was not a competent... So it's basically just 52 ****ting on BB

Belichicks legacy was set after 4... And was confirmed after 6... It was and is just noise from the media creating the "was it bb or tb" controversy... Those who didn't bite realize it's both, together...

Once you see it, understand it, then it's impossible to say anything but...

BBs legacy is secure regardless of what happens here on out... No matter what Ted Johnson says

To be fair though, people on this very board were claiming the same thing thing just 2 months ago. It was all Brady, Bill should be fired etc.

It was always a dumb take even when the Bucs won a super bowl and the Patriots limped to 7-9. I always said look at both rosters.

To be fair my ass. Axes to grind, unwilling to let a player go... Sorry not sorry but bandwagon jumpers are just that - bandwagon fans... The same people who derided new fans brount in by the dynasty, sarcastically described as pink hats by those very people... Yeah don't care what they rightly say or think on the matter...

They can enjoy their ongoing *********** in the sub forum...

Facts not in evidence=if.

That's like people saying that a person or team can control their own destiny. You can't since your destiny is something that inevitably going to happen. Same thing with "legacy". BB's legacy is already set in stone unless you have a time machine and go back and stop him from winning 6 Super Bowls.

This is the Brady/BB argument all over again.

BB drafted Tom. Tom succeeded and the team won.

BB drafted Cassel. Cassel succeeded and the team won.

BB drafted Jimmy. Jimmy succeeded and the team won.

BB drafted Mac. Mac succeeded and the team won.

There is a trend here.

BB identifies, drafts, develops and gets the most out of players that help the team win. Some are GOATs. Some are functional QBs. One is on an absurd trajectory to having a great career.

Johnson is a bitter turdball. Bianca Wilfork agrees.

It’s really hard to find a competent QB.

Johnson was a classic run stuffing inside linebacker who played 4 years for Colorado and then 10 seasons in the NFL. He played his entire career in an era where a lot less was known about concussions and how serious they are. It's believable that Belichick told him to suit up and get on the field before he was ready. It's not believable that Bill McCartney, Bill Parcells and Pete Carroll didn't tell him the same thing. It's unfortunate that Ted Johnson and others have to pay a long term price for this, but that was football culture at that time. I can't say he's wrong to hold a grudge against Belichick, but there's also a decent chance that, even if the Patriots were somehow using modern concussion protocols 20 years ago, Johnson would be in the same spot, cognitively.
When speaking of the violence and hard hitting in the NFL, they should show a picture of Ted Johnson's helmet being broken in half.

Recency bias. It’s ok though, at our age in ten minutes you won’t remember it.
It's also true that there are so many people these days trying to make a living as talking heads, they need to manufacture "hot takes" or perish.

What we used to refer to as the echo machine is now the reverb machine on sterioids.

This is a big reason why we have recency bias IMO, everything new gets shined up so much while everything old fades away.

Wait, the man with 8 rings.... eight... needed a pudgy, big eared 23 year old direct out of college to save his legacy???

*this in no way is a dig on Mac. Mac is great. #teammac and all that

Why do so many think that history began circa 2000?

I think there's also a recent bias against basketball coaches because of the modern game, which is solely about having 1 or 2 of the best players.

Huh? How is that damaging? Because that statement makes no sense on the surface. I mean opponents display their signals in front of 80k people plus millions of people on TV. If they continue to use the same signals and the other team figures those out that is the fault of one side and one side only.

There's a reason indicators are used and changed often, in baseball. Often from inning to inning.
Yeah, I don't think what I'm describing is the same as what you're describing.

Belichick is a Hall of Fame lock and an all-timer relative to the 21st century NFL at least. I'm not going to try to compare him to other sports or when the forward pass was still a novelty or whatever.

If you see his legacy as harmed by Brady winning a ring without him while the Pats went 7-9, well logically the only way to make up for that is to win a championship without Brady. Through that (warped) lens, Mac hasn't saved anything for Belichick yet.

So even if you take his framing at face value, Ted is still wrong.

I remember the story about TJ and the signals. Weird that I haven't heard anything like that from anyone else other than him. Not saying he's lying but maybe there's a missing part of that story that isn't being told.

As for Bill without Brady... Nobody cares that Chuck Noll didn't win anything without Bradshaw and Walsh didn't win without Montana. Both are still considered all time great coaches and rightfully so.

So if Bill doesn't win another SB that won't do anything to his legacy.

Respect to him but Belichick did it in a salary cap era and in the social media age. Players are more empowered than back then as well.
