Per Schefter - Odell Beckam WILL be released by Cleveland

Report now is that they did not convert salary to bonus, so any team claiming is on the hook for all his remaining salary. What they did was to drop the next two years so he is FA after this season. Don’t see that as being an inducement to claim him, not sure what’s the point. Maybe it frees CLE from any risk of being on the hook for some remaining guarantees? So most likely he will clear waivers and be able to negotiate as FA for the rest of this year.

Sources: OBJ, Browns reach settlement; exit set

It is almost like the Browns just caved and gave into OBJ just to get rid of him. They made his contract near impossible for anyone to claim him off of waivers, but even if someone might, waiving his last two years of service and making him a free agent after this year guarantees that any team that is going nowhere this year or has an awful QB will pick him up. This basically guarantees OBJ to be picked up off of waivers by a contender who intends to make him the focal point of the offense or makes him a free agent now and lets him pick his next team.

Sounds like a sandlot player to me.

OBJ and Mahomes would be drawing up plays in the huddle. Go to the Gatorade jug and cut left then right.

Yeah, he's a freelancer. I saw a report that many inside the Browns were saying this in response to OBJ's father's video blaming Mayfield for his lack of production. The pro Mayfield argument was that just because OBJ was open doesn't mean he was where he was supposed to be and, like the Pats' offense, the Browns' offense rely of receiver running precise routes and timing passes.

The Pats WRs had options running routes with Brady.

The players that Brady clicked with saw the defense the same way and the others who turned the wrong way drew Bradys ire.

Updated Odell news:

Still not getting how it will save Cleveland cash and cap money if he isn't claimed. Isn't his base salary guaranteed no matter what? The only savings from the cap would be reduced by whatever a new team team signed him for which would likely be the veteran minimum since OBJ would not get a single dollar of new money unless someone paid him over the $7.25 million still owed to him. So likely, the Browns would save a few hundred of thousand of dollars.

The way I see it if they converted a large part of his base salary into a bonus and made his remaining base be around $2-3 million or so, they would be more likely to see someone pick him up on waivers and they would get the base removed from their cap and what they owed in payout to him.

What am I missing here?

I assumed there were guaranteed dollars beyond this season, so by eliminating the last two years of the contract the Browns will be freed from those obligations. I didn’t look to confirm, but that seems to be the only thing that makes sense.
