Don't get why so many are afraid of JC's impending free agency... The Pats own his rights... Can let him test the waters, but at the end of the day, if BB wants him, he's here at least thru next season...

There are guys who the Pats pay... least thru the second contract... It's the third deal that usually hits the tipping point of departure...

When you put it that way, he probably deserves top ten money. I don't think he's at the Law, Gilmore, or Revis level, but he's still a #1 corner (or a high-end #2) based purely on numbers. Tough to figure out his value. I don't miss the days of poor secondary play, but is he worth 17M+ per year? That's difficult to say right now. I suspect someone else will overpay him. I'd prefer he's here, but in the 12 - 15 range. That may not be realistic as the cap continues to go up, however.

Another way to view JC is his WR matchups. They generally are way less efficient than their averages:

Mike Evans 12 targets 7 receptions 75 yards 0 TDs 1 OPI 76.7 rating (130.6 rating when targeted for the season)

Amari Cooper 8 targets 5 receptions 55 yards 0 TDs 82.8 rating (129.8 rating when targeted)

He also got the pats off the field on 3rd down vs. Lamb

Mike Williams 4 targets 2 receptions 19 yards 0 TDs 63.5 rating (126.1 rating when targeted)


The matchups with Diggs may help BB with his decision. Should be big games & they’ll need him to show up.

Still have to pay it. I don't want lowIQ idiots surrounding BB think they can patch a secondary without elite cornerbacks. Think of the crappy smurf CB era when they could never get a key 3rd down stop.

Coincidentally also with roommates from John Carroll deciding this was a good thing back then as well.

This is going to be a tough decision. If the Pats make the playoffs and look like they can contend going forward, they should pay him. The risk of not replacing him could haunt Bill. Look back at 2008. I had no problem with Asante leaving as he was a smurf himself and came up small dropping two picks on the last drive and day dreaming on the Tyree catch. How could you pay the guy after that? But Bill's plan was terrible and the team suffered from 2008-2012 before they landed Talib.

Personally I'm hoping that if the team looks like it can go to the playoffs again JC will play ball and we can negotiate a deal that's fair for both sides. Jackson is a #1CB, those don't grow on trees. And speaking personally I thinik JCJ has room to grow. He is only 26. He's the sort of guy Bill is probably more willing to take a risk on since he's young, aggressive defender who shows the right attitude.

I'm not too worried about losing JC. I think that as long as the team does well and he knows he'll be competing for rings here, Bill will be able to get something done.

Unfortunately keeping Gilmore wasn't an option because he was nursing his injury as a means of holding out. Hopefully we can get something done with jackson before it gets that bad.

Gilmore coming off an injury on the wrong side of 30 and stating he wanted to get paid, while kinda sorta using an injury to maybe hold out? I have nothing against Gilmore, but not sure if investing huge $$'s in him at this point is the right way to spend your money.

JC on the otherhand should probably be paid.

Pay the man... pay the man... pay the man... I keep seeing this. How? They certainly can't extend him now. They don't have the cap space. And by the time the big hitters come off the cap this offseason (Hightower @$12.4M & McCourty @$11M), they only have a small window before he's a free agent. They'll likely have to franchise tag him just to be able to continue negotiations with him, just like they did with Thuney two years ago. And BTW - this situation could end the same as it did with Thuney. If Jackson wants to hit the market, he'll hit the market.

And as usual, why do so many of you assume that he *has to* negotiate with the Patriots at all? If he wants to test free agency, that's his right. There is nothing the Patriots can do outside of tagging him to force him to stay.

According to the Gilmore interview, what bothered him the most aside from the contract was how his injury was managed. He emphasized that in Carolina he's been able to do the things he needed to do to get back on the field.

I'm not saying who's right or wrong in this spat (and there's probably some fault in both camps), but there's a deeper part to this story than we know.

We're already going to be losing DMac, and needing stability in that secondary. I see Phillips becoming the new captain of the DB's.
I'm not sure Williams or Mills will be here next year. We'll definitely need an infusion - FA or big draft pick.

They need some major roster changes because they're at the cap. Unfortunately HOF McCourty may not be in the picture in the future. Maybe Hightower too. And then huge crippling numbers stuck with Wynn, Agholar, Jonnu, and (I forget his figure) Godchaux.
