Tampa wasn't playing with Gronk and JPP. Dallas wasn't playing with Michael Gallup.

I honestly don't think we stand much of a chance against any of those NFC powerhouses if we were to get to the super bowl. The talent difference is too much.
Maybe, but on the flipside Mac n Cheese will have more experience under his belt and the offense may improve as the season goes. I'm not saying we are Superbowl Contenders, but I do see us making some noise

That’s a concern I’d be happy to deal with if it happens…..

How to say, "I have never seen the 2001 Patriots play before" without saying it.

In 2001, the Pats defense was much better as was the offensive line. Could a repeat of 2001 happen? Sure, but I think the team is more likely to make a deep playoff run in 2022.

Dunno. IMO, it's comparable....a break down:

LT: A young Matt Light > Isaiah Wynn/Justin Herron
LG: Mike Onwenu/Ted Karras > Mike Compton
C: David Andrews = Damien Woody
RG: Shaq Mason > Joe Andruzzi
RT: Trent Brown/Mike Onwenu/Justin Herron > Greg Randall

D-Line: Hamiliton, Mitchell, McGinest, Pleasant, Seymour vs. Guy, Barmore, Wise, Godchaux, and Davis....only Seymour and McGinest really stand out here. So, the 2001 Patriots get the edge here.

Linebackers: Vrabel/Phifer/Bruschi/Chatham/Cox/Izzo vs. Hightower/Judon/Van Noy/Collins/Bentley/Uche..... Vrabel was very good, but not the Vrabel we knew in 2003-2007ish...ditto for Bruschi..he was coming on his own after being on ST's for a while...Cox was an old veteran by then who saw reduced snaps as the season progressed. Izzo was a ST Ace. Phifer was the best LB we had that year, IMO. Hightower needs no discussion....best LB we probably ever had in the BB era. ...but that depends on whether you count McGinest as a LBer or not.

Secondary: Ty Law/OTIS Smith/Tebucky Jones/Lawyer Milloy > Jackson/Mills/Phillips/DMac/Dugger....if we still had Gilmore, I might argue for the 2021 squad.

Comparable....the 2001 team had like 20+ free agents in camp...and things did not really start to shake out until maybe weeks 7 or 8...even when they were on their season ending 9 game winning streak there were times where I wasn't sure we would win...like @NYJ and @BUF. Then at the end of the season, we stumbled upon a BYE after the Jets upset the Raiders.

Let the 2021 season story be told......

Was it?

2001 Patriots - and they were playing a last place schedule

I mean we'll see where our D ends up, but we got shredded by Jameis Winston and Davis Mills this year. In 2001, we demolished Peyton twice. By the end of the 2001 season, the Pats D was ranked 4th in points allowed. OTOH, Pats are 10th this year in points allowed.

I agree with your conclusion though - I think the window opens in 2022 if all goes well. This year is TBD.

The 01 team allowed 30+ to Miami (along with 200 yards rushing) and Denver. I don't think they were great against a subpar Saints team either, allowed 400+ yards of offense.

Wouldn't say they got shredded by Winston he was only 13-21 for 128 yards. 1 of his TD was a terrible throw that somehow was caught. I think Kamara hurt the Pats more than Winston did.

IF the Patriots make the playoffs this season (odds are against; thanks miami!) I will be surprised and this season will be a success.
If the Pats miss the playoffs next season, I'll be depressed. Heard that seppuku is really, really painful though.

This game is going south. Pats may be facing PJ Walker without McCaffrey. They should be 5-4 with a huge game at Gillette vs. the browns. No Davis Mills type funny business this week please.

It was a different team 20 years ago. I still dont get why fans think if something happened with a different team two decades ago that it would happen now. The pats were 6th in points allowed in 2001.

No one is saying it WILL happen. They're pointing out that a lot of similar concerns were said about that 2001 team, and that maybe we shouldn't just assume this team is going nowhere just yet. Also, that defense may have finished 6th, but they were allowing 20 points per game through their first 8 and improved as the year went on. This year's team? 20.5, which is 8th best right now. So if you're using that to show me this big huge difference in the teams, it missed the mark.

Well there you have it…

Who is going to this game? I am going, and psyched!!! I've lived in Durham NC for almost 20 years now, and go to the games when the Patriots come down here.

I hope it's ok if I post some of the stuff being put on by the NC Patriots fan club. They are doing a couple of events for those interested (not free). Note I'm just a member, not making any money off this. They put on really good events, usually meeting in Raleigh.

The night before, there is a tailgate party where Fitzy will be making an appearance. Also, Ben Coates and Antwan Harris will be there.

Tickets to that one are available here:

Then the day of there is an actual tailgate party at the stadium also being hosted by the fan club:

I plan to be at both of these events, I am the nerdy tall guy wearing glasses. Not built for football.

Please let me know if you will be there it would be great to meet people from patsfan.com!!!
The one with the patriots hat, right? All kidding aside it looks really good.

It seems to me that when we play the panthers its in carolina
