Mac Jones appreciation thread

In regards to QB ceiling talk:

Dak Prescott is a 6’2 QB with average athleticism (him & Mac have nearly identical 40, broad & vert jump) & an average arm. He has elite accuracy, pocket presence that may be second to Tom Brady & throws with anticipation as good as anyone in the NFL.

He may win MVP & is arguably a top 3 QB in the league. You don’t even have to make the unfair comparison to Tom to show there are other QBs with a similar playstyle to Mac playing at a high level IMO.

So for all of you who preferred Justin Fields pre-draft, where would have happened if the Bears had picked Mac and the Pats had picked Fields? How would the two QB's be doing right now?

Same question for those who preferred Trey Lance.

I'll leave Trevor out of this because he's clearly going to be good to great.

I'll leave Zac out because he's a clown.
Mac was the 2nd best qb prospect in the draft. Im not that big on college football but i saw almost every game lawrence mac and fields played. Mac was head and shoulders better than fields. I never understood any of these draftniks who didnt put him #2 behind lawrence. But im glad they didnt.
Mac also walked into a better situation than the others. But that doesnt change his talent. He would be much better than Fields has been in Chicago. Fields would not be as good as mac has been in NE.

BTW, over at NFL.com, here were the final drafts . . .

All of these drafts had Jones going to SF at 3.
  • Jeremiah: Pats trade up to 11 for Lance ("The former NDSU QB has a lot of qualities the Patriots value.")
  • Schrager: Pats trade up to 8 for Fields ("New England goes and get Fields, a guy many in the league seem to be split on. Although it might be a silent majority, more offensive coaches than not love the size, the speed, the makeup, the smarts and the person.")
  • Zierlein: Pats trade up to 7 for Lance ("Lance's size, arm talent, mobility and football IQ should all be appealing to Bill Belichick. The Patriots add their quarterback of the future and allow him to marinate this season.")
  • Casserly (no trades): Pats take Lance at 15 ("Do they trade for Jimmy G? Do they draft a guy early? In this case, they snag a QB with a lot of upside.")
Other drafts:
  • Davis (no trades): Pats take Jones at 15 ("There's plenty of chatter about the Pats trading up for a QB, and they might have to . . .In this scenario, they stick and pick this ultra-accurate thrower.")
  • Brooks (no trades): Pats take Fields at 15 ("Fields is a five-star talent who offers big-play potential in both the run and pass games.")
  • Lewis (no trades): Micah Parsons at 15; all the QBs are gone in the top 10.
  • Reuter: Jaylen Waddle at 15; all the QBs are gone in the top 10.

This is not true.
Tom Brady led the NFL in deep ball passing several times. Might be 4 or 5.
More than anyone else since 2001 I believe.
Bradys one of the most accurate deep ball passers in nfl history. Thats a fact.
Norm, you were partly right about one thing: after Brady led the nfl in deep ball acc.in 2007, his deep ball#'s went down steeply over the next 7 yrs. This was due to lack of deep ball threats, not his ability.
Then in 2015, his #'s went way up and he led the league again. We know he also led the league last year and I believe hes leading the nfl right now. There were a # of other seasons where he was near the top. 2 of the most prevalent types of wrs who catch deep balls( defined by either 20 or 25 air yards depending on which metric you use)are high-pointers like Julio Jones or speed guys. Moss was both and Gronk highpointed a lot. Thats it. Hes had basically 2 reliable deep ball threats in his career at NE. You see what hes doing in Tampa with quality wrs. Its never been about his talent.

Exactly this. Brady has a great deep ball. No QB throws deep unless they have players that can get open deep. When Brady has a deep threat, he breaks all the records. Pretty much Brady gets the best he can get out of what he has.

I can't wait until he feels comfortable enough to really sling it deep. I think he's going to be one of the best deep ball passers in the league.
This is mostly OLine dependent, the line played better against the Cowboys then substantially better against the Jets and the downfield plays improved.

It’s not “weapons” or limits placed on Mac, it’s blocking. Longer routes require longer drops and time to develop. As long as they’re blocking well, using play action the long plays will be there.

wow, he only had 5 passes on 3rd down in 3 games? QB's have that many 3rd down passes in one game

You trying to knock down Mac is getting really old…

Least shocking occurrence of 2021…

The Brady fellators trying to turn this Mac Jones appreciation thread into a Tom Brady appreciation thread.

In their defense, Mac doesn't have a supermodel wife, Hollywood baby mama, hair transplant, botox treatments or commercial endorsement deals for Subway and crypto currency. Nor does he hawk concussion water or his own brand-name multivitamin supplement. Let's face it, Mac Jones has a long, long way to go. We must pump the brakes on this kid lest we become "blind homers" in the eyes of Brady boot-licking intelligentsia,

In the 4th quarter, that's only 3 quarters of play taken into account. The future is now old man.

Who is knocking down Mac? Maybe just pumping the brakes on expectations a bit and that's fair.

If the choices were taking Mac Jones at 15 or rolling with Cam Newton again, or moving up for a QB in the draft like Fields or trading for JG or someone else...right now I'd say they got it right.

No, those were just 4th quarter totals. He's 14/21 (66.7%) for 195yds 2 TDs overall on 3rd down over the last three games, 11 of those completions were first downs.

Yeah I don’t think there is somebody who think Mac Jones is not good. The debate is between people here who have already decided that Mac will be Peyton Manning and people who think that’s it’s way too early to call anything.

That poster does that in every thread - knocking down Mac because he’s not Brady.

I would certainly agree. As much as I've said I wish they had made it work and kept Brady, I'm happy they found someone who at least appears to have the basic foundation and attributes to make him a successful QB for this team long-term.

We'll never see another Brady, so that train needs to just move on. He's gone, again, I didn't agree with it, but obviously, I have to - and have - gotten over it. However, I'm certainly good that they seem to have found someone who can make plays, score points, and not turn it over. Most teams that exit the playoffs early are the ones who have QBs that make untimely mistakes and don't make plays when they need to. Overall, at this point, Jones appears to have checked the right boxes.

Keeping a perspective is easy. Just look around at the other top rookie QBs and how they've performed this year, not just on paper, but watching them. Jones isn't throwing stupid interceptions. He's not forcing the football. On the other double-pass they tried, rather than throw it anyway and force it, he didn't think twice about throwing it away. It's a lot of the little things that make me feel like he'll be good in this offense.

He doesn't need to be a superstar - but he'll become one simply by being a guy who completes a high percentage of passes without making mistakes. Because down the stretch, that's how teams win when you get into January. I mean, Brady wasn't a superstar in his first season, he just played better than Gannon and Stewart that first year in the sense that he didn't throw an untimely pick or make a dumb decision. When you couple that with the fact you have Belichick as the coach and a game plan that should give you a shot to win, that's often all it takes.

But so far, so good. Hopefully, he continues progressing but it's been fun watching how this year has continued to play out.
