Patriots Player Departure Gilmore traded to Carolina

I'm assuming they're going to bring someone in and they needed cap space

There are at least 10 teams that could take on his contract...Carolina is one that comes to mind as they lost Jaycee Horn for a while.
Holy *** look at the dead money on the Lions (we have a lot too, but they're next level)

The one thing I can think of that no one else has mentioned is that perhaps NE does want to keep him but not for anywhere near this money. Breer mentioned they actually asked him to take a pay cut, but we know he’s been adamant that he wanted a big extension before he would take the field.

By cutting him, now he has no choice. He has to visit teams and find out what his worth actually is, not what his agent tells him it is. Teams will get a look at how he is physically. Obviously the cap space crunch this year will impact this process.

Then once he’s talked to a few teams Bill can come back with his original offer and say “see? Wasn’t so bad was it? Sign here.”

I’m not saying it works, but it feels like a Bill move.
No way.

Whoever said this is about the Oline must be on to something. Maybe this is a way to clear space to help out there. Maybe Brown isn't going to be back? RT is more important.
I certainly hope so. Otherwise, not trading him in 2020 when he still had some value looks like a pretty big error.

The trade deadline is in November, right? Why do it now?

The only thing I can imagine is they needed the cap space now to make a trade for an OL to keep Mac alive? I'm just making that up but I dunno, just cutting him is so weird.

Because they were hoping to resign him and were counting on him to be a CB1 for the 20 and 21 seasons.
Then they could have addressed that, too, before it got ugly. But, in looking at the team’s history, it’s pretty clear that he wasn’t going to be in their future plans given his age.

Alot of GM errors going on lately but I'm not in the mood to have the homers lose their minds on me. You fight the good fight!

For those that truly want to express how you really feel:

Yeah, I can see how he'd have no trade value while looking for $15 million.

They’re already in damage control mode.

No one is offering anything? At all? Multiple reports coming out now that he's healthy. Who knows how true that is and obviously they couldn't get what they wanted but flat out release him? I guess we aren't in the hunt this year so it doesn't really matter if he walks over to KC.
Yeah, kind of surprising we couldn't at least get a 4th or 5th but per Schefter, he's not going to take a discount and that could scare teams away. He's a great player when healthy but at 31 and coming off an injury, he wants to be paid top money...I guess JC becomes a priority now this offseason.

There’s no chance he’s coming back.
I wouldn’t say that. There’s never been any real sign of animosity between the team and Gilmore at all. I don’t think it’s likely, but I wouldn’t say it’s 0%.

Devil's advocate, end of last season he goes on the PUP list. Do teams give you a second or first rounder for a guy who can not physically perform? Would you urge BB to give a 1st or 2nd to someone for a guy just out of surgery based on past returns?

I was talking before last season.
