Boston Globe: "Patriots Need to Protect Mac Jones Before the Developmental Damage is Done"

while the pass protection has been less than stellar, both from the OL and RB positions, Mac also needs to learn to move in the pocket......it took Brady time to learn how to slide up, take a few steps here or there to buy some time and help the protection.....some of these hits are on him, typical young QB

didn't see his development being harmed a whole hell of a lot last night

It's already being affected. And not his fault. There are a couple times TEs were open at the 2nd level but he immediately looks for his 5 yard dump off because he's under pressure so much. By season's end he's going to automatically process plays as if he's under constant attack as opposed to having time to find the best route to throw to.

.

Wish we had given that 13 million per year to a more athletic WR than Agolor. Mac is a game changing WR away from putting up monster stats

Could have taken that money and I don't know, keep your DPOY star cornerback happy....

Or - better still - take that money and keep your iron-man, Pro Bowl-caliber LG, who was the lynchpin for the rest of the OL and made your current starting LT actually look decent... whenever the ouchies aren't giving him the hurtsies...

It's bizarre how bad Wynn looks this year. And he's getting $10-11M next season.

Why splurge so much on free agency only to have your star CB miss half the year due to being unhappy
Why do you want a guy who will sit out half the year because he's unhappy?

I want Gilmore out there, sure, but I'm not sure he's the same guy after two years and that injury.

You say this all the time...they're not built that way and never will be.

And they didn't give Agholor 13/year. it's 11, and the top guys are making 17+.

He was still really good last year. I think the D would play lights out when he comes back. Just seems odd to spend $350M including $160M guaranteed in FA contracts but then try to save $8M on your star corner making him disgruntled.

For all we know, Gilmore could actually be, you know, injured... I'm not going to start passing judgement until the day after Week 6 ends, at the earliest.

Yup. Of course he is injured (officially). And same as last year when he was "injured". Seems short sighted to save $ on your star corner and blow a ton on FA

2 years 26 million? For a guy on pace for pedestrian stats

Guess we’ll see how the backups do this week if Wynn and Onwenu can’t go.

No need for Bill to make any long-term offers until Gilmore is activated from PUP and shows that he has returned to at minimum the 2020 pre-injury version of himself... To do otherwise wouldn't make sense.

You are entitled to your opinion, but not to the facts.

He’s talking about an elite pass catcher who changes the game and draws double teams. The Patriots had Moss from 2007-10 and Gronkowski from 2010-18. Both are arguably top-25 all-time players, top-3 at their position all-time, and total physical freaks.

In 2017, the Patriots traded a first round pick for Brandin Cooks, hoping he‘d be that stud.

In 2019, the Patriots signed Antonio Brown - a huge risk - hoping he’d be that guy.

It’s so disingenuous to say “they’re not built that way and never will be.” Easy to say when they just had 12 consecutive years of having the league’s best skill player out there creating spacing for all of their complementary players. And I didn’t even get into Welker, Edelman, or the big contract they gave Amendola.

And they dumped Cooks when he would have cost them $8 million.

And they got Brown cheap, and he's still playing cheap.

Top guys in the NFL are going to 17+/year now at WR. Let me know when that happens. They just laid out big money for 2 TEs and Agholor, and paid Bourne...so they're REALLY not built that way.

Yeah…if your point is about cost, then I won’t argue. They’re not going to pay close to market for any WR1. The issue, as I see it, is how difficult it is to find a game changing WR or TE to build an offense around. We’ve seen since 2006, when they passed on Branch, that the idea of having a bunch of WR2s out there only works well if you have a Gronk/Moss guy. When Gronk got injured, the difference was often obvious, and that was even with Brady as QB.

They got Moss at such a bargain and then extended Gronk to a big-time team friendly deal (length of contract and lack of player option made it that way)…they also had Welker and Edelman and cheap deals. It’s very challenging nowadays to find the same types of extreme bargains where you’re getting elite players at WR/TE and paying a fraction of the cost. Especially if you’re not getting them from the draft.

Ummm... never mind...
