Who starts week 1? (Not who you want to start but who you think will start)

I voted Mac but all I really wanted was a positive QB situation and we have that. The kid is flashing and Cam is doing all that he can do to hold him off. It's a win win.

If Cam is still playing by week whatever it's because the team is winning which is a good thing.

My sentiment is that Josh wants Mac to start, most of the team wants Mac to start based mainly on players comments. The feeling I have is that Bill is probably one of the few who wants Cam to start in the organization.

but again it’s only my feeling.

Cam

He gives the Pats the best shot to win and make the post season. His run ability alone gives him the edge. Cam is a top 5 run QB in the NFL. Passing wise, there should be at least 1 good TE at his disposal that was not around last season. It remains to be seen if the 2021 WRs are any good at all.

BB does not play musical QBs. The QB is the leader of the team/franchise and there can only be 1 General. He will stick with Cam until its impossible to keep him in there.

If it was Cam bullet passes being dropped, absolutely certain the biased reporters wouldn't even be counting drops or reporting on them to create these fake 'adjusted' completion stats. An incompletion is an incompletion.

.
Even without adjusting for drops the rookie came in and posted almost 70% completion percentage. That's impressive by itself. Mac is good and he's going to light this league up for a long time

Are you high? Top 5 QB? In what reality?

I think there are only four other true "run" QBs...Murray, L. Jackson, J. Allen and D. Watson...so yeah, Newton is fifth (and Allen and Watson are trending away from run QBs, so he may be fifth...of three)

i guess you like losing

It's going to be Cam for week 1. I don't think it's a bad idea for Mac to start the whole year (and ultimately that's what I'm hoping for), but there are benefits to sitting him for a month or so to start the season:

1) Assuming Cam has improved in this offense, he might give you a better chance of beating Miami in week 1. Flores is no slouch as a defensive coach, and he will draw up something that gives a rookie making his first start some head spins, much like Belichick typically does.

2) They may not want Mac to have to play 17 games (plus hopefully a playoff game) in his first year of pro conditioning. There would be some value to having him fresher later in the year.

3) Give him a few games to get a feel for the rhythm of weekly opponent prep in this system, and to see some different coverages against the scout team that he may not have seen in his college career. From reports, the Giants were pretty vanilla with their safety looks on day 1 of joint practices, then mixed it up a lot more on day 2 (when Jones struggled more). Exposing him to more looks before he sees real action has value.

Now, none of the above are strictly required for a rookie QB to do well, and some could be learned on the job. But it's not like there's just zero logic behind letting a rookie QB ease in, so if that's the road they go down I'm fine with it (I know they're really worried about my opinion on these things).

I am going to play Devil’s Advocate and vote for Mac starting. Bill says let the kid play because: 1) he’s the better player 2) he needs the reps, 3) unless they change the CBA, you only have him for four years at a reasonable salary, 4) he’s a better fit for the offense, 5) Brady hardly had an NFL body in 2001 so the injury concern is overblown, 6) he's a better game manager, 7) like Bedard says, the offense is built for a guy like him, 8) the offense needs to score because the defense isn’t good enough to carry the team alone, 9) rookie QBs play more now and he knows the playbook, 10) the players already follow him.

damn cam sham jam

I missed the run part, but who cares. Being a top 5 run QB didn't do shi*t for the Pats last year. The guy that can run the offense the most efficiently gives us the best chance to win. Until Cam proves otherwise, Mac is the guy that's doing it better from a pre-snap perspective. Hell, he already can run the hurry up, I don't think I've seen Cam do that once.

Cam starts the season and the job is his as long as the Offense plays to expectations. BB privately guarantees him a specific number of games to take some of the pressure off (of course, having BB "100% behind you" is probably worth the air into which he speaks the words).

Mac has shown a lot of good and some "not so good" so far. He's probably ready to start the season if something happens to Cam, but, IMHO, he still needs time, a chance to develop physically and NFL-wise.

Nah, no way in hell does BB "guarantee" starts for anyone.... not even Brady.

& It's not just the losing streak possibility, although that's hard to separate from virus variables.

In addition to a short hook for Cam getting himself sick, he's exposing his team to physical risk but also to risk of forfeit.
Just to be clear on one point: the NFL has not said that an outbreak among unvaccinated players will cause a forfeit. What they have said is that if a game is canceled and cannot be rescheduled because of such an outbreak, it will be treated as a forfeit.

Equally importantly to the players, if a game gets canceled, neither team's players get paid.

Want: Maccurate Jones
Reality: Cam

I see the Saints named Winston the starter.

Tell me how both teams, and the player aren’t better off, with this hypothetical trade:

Patriots receive Saints 2022 third-round pick
Saints receive quarterback Cam Newton

Cam will start but he better win games or the fans are going to quickly turn on him and Bill. I expect lots of boo birds and chants for Mac.

I can see Gillette stadium singing « We want Mac, We want Mac » before the end of the first quarter
