Patriots Training Camp Day 16 (8/24) NYG

I think we all know Mac is our qb of the future. It's a matter of "when" it happens as opposed to "if" it happens. If Mac has a great week of joint practices and plays well in the game against the Giants, does he get the nod over Cam in game 1? I'm not sure, but I know one of the reasons I am tuning in to the preseason games is to watch Mac.

Ashley

Have you ever been wrong in your life?

Agree but Mac is even saying he doesn’t think he is ready yet.
That could be out of respect for Cam or not to tip Bills hat.
However he really could be thinking I’m going to watch Cam and learn this season.
I have mixed feelings if he in his mind is going to watch.
First thing I think is ok it’s good for QBs to sit back and learn.
However the second part says to me this was the most pro ready plug and play QB in the last 5 years arguably longer.
If he doesn’t want to lead the team fight now as a rookie coming out of Alabama’s pro style system. I would love to him to have more of a killer instinct.
I would guess he’s just toeing the line and doesn’t want to tip bills hat or upset Cam.
What a tortured interpretation of completely benign quotes.

To me, the main benefit of sitting the rookie is so he can steadily build up to the nfl level through practice, film review, going in to less competitive game situations, etc. This allows them to not be thrown into the fire prematurely and destroyed mentally. With that said, I think you're absolutely right in this situation. We have the right rookie, the right coaching staff, and the right supporting cast for Mac to perform and develop well on the field. If the competition is close, which it is, the last reason BB rolls with Cam to start the season is because he sees some other value in the rookie holding the clipboard for a few games that I am unaware of. And, as always, I defer to BB.
If they get mentally destroyed by competing they were never going to be the right guy.
I don’t agree that you progress at all by sitting on the sidelines.

This starter thing is overrated. The truth is if Cam plays like he did last year, patriots will bench him. They did it last year with Stidham, they won’t hesitate to do it again. (The only reason Stidham or Hoyer did not take the job from Cam last year was that they were awful as well.)

If Cam is playing well and their quarterback play is close (as it appears to be) what’s the downside of having Mac Jones sit and learn instead of having to risk pulling your rookie first round pick out of the game, damaging his confidence. Just seems that there is so much urgency to start Jones and so far there is no compelling reason to do so.
I don't think the QB play is as close as you think it is. The question I'm interested in is with which QB driving does the Pats offense look like the Pats offense and as far as I'm concerned, that's Mac all day long.

No doubt in my mind hes starting by Halloween or sooner.
It's a good bet. At that point he'll be either playing poorly or hurt (or both), if history has taught us anything.

He is a rookie in the most complex offenses in the NFL. How long has he been in the patriots system ? He will be the first to tell you that he is still messing up out there and grasping the system is a work in progress. He has played two pre-season games, thats it. His practices by his own accord have been inconsistent. Its not like their play hasn't been close. If this is an argument about why a rookie quarterback should start in week one versus sitting and learning (if he doesn't have to start), am not going to go there. That argument will go on forever...
He's grasping the Patriots system after a few weeks far better than Cam does after more than year.

lol, too many times for the liking!!!
men don't count my dear, you are a women, you have to choose wrong on this topic that's an unwritten rule

If they get destroyed mentally, then they were never going to be Tom Brady. But, you can get more or less out of the vast majority of players depending on how you develop them. Put another way, I think there is definitely something going on when dumpster fire franchises consistently take good prospects and have them looking like complete trash after a few years.

I'm one of the few who like MJ but starting him for a few weeks as a boundary corner scares me.
He wouldn’t start. Mills and Williams would probably share the spot.
