Too bad Butler wasn't mentally prepared to play....a damn shame.
It's sad bc people actually believe this.

*edit*
I really hope this was sarcasm RW. The guy played like 98% of the snaps that year. Was involved in some of the biggest plays in NFL history. I think he could have managed.

A mod should clean up this thread with haste IMO. Or at least balance it out with some Butler SB INT gifs.

Exactly. None of us wants to watch that again. I want this to be Mac's team as soon as possible. I just hope Bill is not so stubborn and committed to Cam that we waste another season.
Belichick is committed to winning. He saw what you saw last year. His public comments are the message he wants to send to his team, not his deepest, hinest thoughts.

Well there had to be a reason. Playing all season and being unprepared to play after arriving late and admitting he wasn’t focussed in practice aren’t mutually exclusive.
We don’t know the facts but obviously something happened.

You can read all about Malcolm's admission if you google, "Malcolm Butler Admits"

I thought i had accidently got on a "Butler thread" from years ago, instead of the training camp thread days 3 and 4

The Butler debate will never get old.

Butler wasn't changing the collective of that game but don't tell me the guy that's been involved in some of the biggest moments in NFL history couldn't have made a few plays to shift the balance in a close game. Not to mention the trickle down effect of the secondary. Players heads in the biggest game of the season.

I'm sorry but pretending that wasn't a big deal or Butler playing wouldn't have made a few plays is bonkers.
Maybe I missed something, but the mystery to me is, if he wasn't ready to play, why waste a gameday roster spot on him?

If you think BB does everything with saintly motives and pure intentions, then you are swallowing the cool-aid. I love and appreciate BB as much as any Pats fan, but he does have a vindictive and stubborn underbelly. Everyone has an ego. And the mantra "best for the football team" works at the podium, but is not always accurate. Exhibit A - benching Butler in a SB that would have created 3 straight (when Rowe was getting torched every play). Point is: BB is as old school as they come, earning your due and humble pie is essential to his philosophy. So yes, he would most certainly keep Cam as the starter for a month or more even if Josh & Co. say that Mac could run their offense as well - for the long term sake of Mac and the team.

Perhaps you don't realize how stunningly arrogant it comes across to profess to be able to read the mind and heart of another human being, one you have never interacted with in any meaningful way, and who couldn't care less if you fell into a volcano tomorrow.

This. Why have him suit up and then tell him right before the game he isn’t playing?

If any other HC did what Bill did in that Super Bowl, he would be absolutely roasted non-stop by the media/talking heads.

Could you give us a list of a bunch of times where you made such comments when people were assuming positive thoughts in such mind reading situations?

I’m more disappointed in the veterans on defense not sticking up for him. This is one of the moments before or at least during the game they tell Bill enough is enough and he needs to go in.

Were you asleep for that?

It happened.
You are correct. When the SB ended he was for sure. But now it seems he just gets a huge pass for it. I never hear it mentioned. To me it is pretty akin to Carroll calling that pass play that handed us the SB. It is always brought up when Carroll is mentioned, that play. With Bill, crickets.

I don’t think it was that bad. I remember mostly them asking the question of what happened.

However, this year was bad.

I’m trying to get a mental picture of someone not named Kraft telling Bill enough is enough. Somehow, it ain’t happening

At least with Carroll, there was a level of logic behind his decision, it was just operating under the wrong circumstances. Butler had to make a HELL of a play, Browner had to jam HARD, and the Patriots had to have run that play endlessly in practice for the stars to align. I will never understand Bill's decision with Butler, and the stubbornness that fueled it.

No one talks about it because Bill won another Super Bowl since and he's got a lot more cred than Pom Pom.
