I found it interesting that when I google the words 'Malcolm Mitchell' the search engine does not respond with the subtitle 'former football player' like it does for nearly every other retired NFL player, but instead returns with the description 'Malcolm Mitchell - author'.

Happy birthday, Mr Mitchell. Your career was far too short, but at least you were part of one of the most memorable victories in all of sports history. I hope that your life is going very well.

Malcolm Mitchell was a great guy whose career was derailed by health issues. By 2017 he'd already had 10 surgeries. The guy just got as much out of his body as he could, flat out. Can't fault him for that.

Absolutely clutch in the 4th quarter of Super Bowl 51. People talk about Brady not trusting rookie receivers, but you can't get more trusted than that.

Other pro football players with New England connections born on this date include:

Ron Stone, 50; born July 20, 1971 in Boston.
Stone went to West Roxbury High School and Boston College. A fourth round draft pick by Dallas in 1994, he was a three-time Pro Bowl right guard for the Giants and Niners from 2000-2002. Stone played in 173 games over 12 seasons from 1994 to 2005, plus 11 playoff games. He also played in two Super Bowls, winning a championship in Super Bowl 30 when Dallas beat Pittsburgh.

If Mal Mitchell had been a "clean" prospect before the draft, he would've been a 3rd-round pick...But he wasn't, so he should've been a 5th-round pick (which we would've had if not for the desperate & short-sighted Keshawn Martin trade)...And if he weren't available at 166? No problem; the comparably-ranked Rashard Higgins still was...

Yet another example of Bill's (& Nicky's) inability to properly evaluate college WRs...

Malcolm Mitchell is in the same category as Robert Edwards. So much talent cut short by injury.
I get just as bummed out thinking about how Malcolm Mitchell had to retire early as I do Robert Edwards :(

Although Malcolm Mitchell's career was very short, at least he got to be a big contributor on a Super Bowl winning team and in an epic Super Bowl victory. Not a bad 1 year experience in the NFL.

One difference: Edwards, although he was also not a clean prospect coming out of Georgia (there's that dam school again) suffered his career-killing injury After he was drafted...Mal Mitchell was Already damaged goods well before the draft.

July 20 Transactions

July 20, 2018:
Offensive tackle Andrew Jelks retires from the NFL without having played a single down. The Pats signed Jelks as an undrafted rookie in 2017 despite his having missed the entire 2015 and 2016 seasons at Vanderbilt due to preseason injuries. The Patriots placed Jelks on the reserve/non-football injury list on September 2, 2017 due to a torn ACL suffered during pre-season workouts his senior year at Vanderbilt; he remained on the NFI last for the entire year. (Note: NFI has no minimum salary like IR does.) Rookies were scheduled to report to training camp on July 22 in 2018, so I am speculating that Jelks failed his physical, leading to the retirement.

July 20, 2017:
Chase Farris is waived with a non-football injury designation. The Pats had signed the guard from Ohio State to their practice squad on October 5, 2016. While preparing for training camp on his own time he tore his Achilles tendon and would have missed the 2017 season regardless. Farris never re-signed with another NFL team, though he did play in the short-lived Alliance of American Football in 2019. He had graduated from Ohio State with a bachelor's in Consumer and Family Financial Services, and now works as a financial representative for Northwestern Mutual in Columbus Ohio.

July 20, 2014:
The Patriots sign free agent Nate Byham. A sixth round pick by San Francisco, the tight end from Pitt was considered to be one of the best blocking tight ends of the 2010 draft. Byham played in a handful of games for the Niners and Bucs from 2010 to 2013; Foxborough was his last NFL stop when the Pats released him five days later.

July 20, 2012:
New England releases rookie free agent WR Matt Roark. It's never a good sign for your pro football career when a team gives up on you this quickly, and that was the case here: the 6'5 receiver never drew interest from any NFL team after that - but he remains a legend in Lexington, Kentucky.

July 20, 2012:

July 20, 2011:

July 20, 2010:
Bret Lockett is re-signed as an exclusive rights free agent. The backup safety and special teamer played in ten games for the Pats that season before landing on IR with a groin injury. More injuries were the hallmark of his stay in New England: he was placed on IR at the end of camp in 2011 with a chest injury, and again in 2012 due to a groin injury. According to his social media the self promoter is in SoCal now, working as a corporate trainer and business consultant helping entrepreneurs executives find more revenue paths.

July 20, 2006:
The Pats waive Jeff Roehl, an offensive tackle originally signed as an undrafted rookie in 2003 by the Giants. Roehl was a victim of final roster cuts in 2005 after spending the entire offseason with the Pats, and had been allocated to NFL Europe earlier in 2006. After spending a couple years playing indoor football he became a music producer and DJ.

July 20, 2005:
Tedy Bruschi elects to sit out the season while recovering from a stroke.

July 20, 2000:

July 20, 1998:
Patriots re-sign exclusive rights free agent Adam Vinatieri to a one-year contract.

July 20, 1995:
New England signs their first round draft pick, cornerback Ty Law.

July 20, 1987:
Roland James undergoes arthroscopic surgery on his knee. The safety was limited to nine games and one start in '87.

July 20, 1985:
Patriots re-sign center Guy Morriss; he played in 59 games for the Pats at the end of his NFL career from 1984 to 1987. After that he served as the team's offensive line coach in 1988-89. Morriss played in 217 NFL games from 1973 to 1987, the first eleven coming as the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles.

July 20, 1984:
The team reports that Clarence Weathers will be out indefinitely after suffering a broken foot. The wide receiver was limited to nine games in '84 and moved on to the Browns the following season.

July 20, 1978:
The Patriots re-sign Leon Gray to a two-year contract extension. Unfortunately the Sullivans decided to save some money by trading Gray away to Houston a year later. At the time John Hannah reportedly said, "We just traded away our Super Bowl".

July 20, 1976:
Bob Geddes retires. The backup inside linebacker was with the Pats for three seasons, and had appeared in 13 games the previous season.

July 20, 1969:
Larry Garron retires after nine seasons with the Patriots. Garron was a four-time American Football League All-Star; he averaged 5.6 yards per carry in 1961 and 5.9 the following season. An original Patriot, he is a member of the Pats All-Decade Team of the 1960s.

July 20, 1968:
The Boston Patriots trade Babe Parilli to the New York Jets for Mike Taliaferro. I get it that the Patriots were in rebuilding mode and needed to get younger, but this was never going to be a good value trade.

More NFL Tidbits

A couple of announcer's nightmares (and torture for the kid - as well as their teacher - growing up):

John Prchlik, born July 20, 1925.
John went to Yale and was drafted by the Boston Yanks in 1947. He won two NFL championships as a defensive tackle for the Bobby Layne era Detroit Lions over the Cleveland Browns in the early fifties.

Dave 'Buster' Hathcock, 78 (born July 20, 1943).
The defensive back won a championship with Green Bay in a game that would later become known as Super Bowl I.

Other pro football players of note born on July 20:

- **** Stanfel (1927-2015); Hall of Fame guard was a five-time All Pro for Detroit and Washington in the fifties, winning two NFL championships.

- Jake Scott (1945-2020); five-time Pro Bowl safety won two Super Bowls with Miami in the seventies.

- Jordan Gross, 41 (1980); Pro Bowl left tackle for Carolina started 167 games over his 11-year career from 2003 to 2013.

- Casey Wiegmann, 48 (1973); the center played in 227 games from 1997-2011, mostly with the Chiefs.

- D.J. Williams, 39 (1982); linebacker played nine of his 11 seasons for Denver, making 897 tackles with 75 tackles for a loss.

That was a LOT of information right there...Well done!
It can be a bit time consuming so I don't know how long I can continue doing it on a daily basis, but I'll try to include it all for now. Personally I find it fascinating to discover the back stories and where-are-they-now developments about all these various players.

Yep, especially about the pre-Fairbanks Pats...Some very interesting dudes there...

Mitchell was going to be the guy that broke the WR-draft curse. I think he could have been a good #2 like David Givens or LaFell (that 1 year). It's such a shame he had a knee that wouldn't heal.

Really great stuff jmt57!

One item that surprised me is that I never knew that Babe Parilli played for the Jets for the last two years of his career and backed up Namath in their Super Bowl back in 1969. Funny thing is that I remember watching that SB but only remember a few of the key players who played in it. As the old saying goes "You learn something new everyday". :)

If it helps, if you need or want pics of the players, I got a whole bunch saved on my comp... Probably in the range of 900 to 1000 players at this point...

That's actually one of the easier parts - but please keep them coming! I love seeing those photos you have, they're great!
