Trent Brown Playing LT and Onwenu at RT with Wynn Still Out

Harry played quality WR in college. Unfortunately that doesn't always translate to the pros. What we know for a fact is that Wynn (when healthy) has played a strong LT at the pro level, and Onwenu has played a strong RT at the pro level. With Brown now in the fold, one of them needs to be moved to LG in order to field your strongest five OL. I'm not claiming that Wynn won't be moved to G (though my money isn't on it), just that we have no data to support either one is better than the other at positions they haven't played at the NFL level.

Good analysis. The biggest factor is if Wynn is unreliable to play. Tough to build a 5man OLine around the least durable person. Extremely injury prone. Wynn might be too small for LT.

Can't argue with that one...

Wynn played quality LG in college....Less than a year ago it was being speculated that Onwenu's best pro position might be DT...

Again, this isn't that hard, people.
C'mon Capt, you really need to be told the difference? Or that just bc you're "quality" in college doesn't mean it'll translate to the pros?

Isaiah Wynn was a quality left guard in college. And a very injury-prone LT in the pros.

Let's put it this way: I like Wynn's chances of becoming - if healthy, as always - a starting-caliber LG here, especially with the Championship-winning LT/C combination of Brown & Andrews on either side of him...We should be grateful that Onwenu adjusted to RT so well after playing exclusively at RG at Michigan...Why try to put more on the kid's plate by having him move to the other side of Center where a lot of the movements he learned last season will have to un-learned for the Left side? Let him settle-in at one side this season, and maybe re-visit our options next season...

I do find it interesting that a couple of media reports I’ve read say the Patriots have generally been aligning with Brown at LT, Onwenu at RT and Karras at LG with Wynn missing OTAs

Based on old Scarneccian logic, it was better to just plug someone into the position with the missing player than move multiple players around, so it’s interesting that they’re playing two players in different positions than what it’s assumed they’ll be playing come fall with Wynn’s absence.

Exactly. Minimize moving 3 different guys around every time, which in this case the simplest path is just alternate Wynn and Karras at left guard depending on Wynn's health. Makes sense. Fully expect the fraud blowhard experts here to do a 180 and get on board when the Pats do this in the regular season.

If we do this to start the regular season, many of us will then question how a part time LG is worth $10M for his 2022 services.

Wynn will always start ahead of Karras if he's healthy, same as Andrews & Mason.

Nah. Pats had to decide a month ago whether to pay or not. It was a bad situation to be in. Had to pay it given the dearth of alternative options. Getting Brown was excellent and I think it's likely if Brown takes a slight discount that we roll with Brown and Onwenu at tackle in 2022 and beyond.

There is no reason to be paid less to be our LT than Wynn will get to be our LG, but a couple of million won't be an issue.

I'm 100% fine with extending Brown as soon as possible. He is on my short list along with Gilmore, Jackson and Phillips.

shouldn’t we see what brown has in the tank before we extend him?

As always, the longer you wait, the higher the cost. If he shows that he is a top OT, then his cost will go up by alot.

The question is whether to take the risk with a player that the Belichick knows.

Yeah extend this guy before his $ goes up, he's young too. Trent Brown is a superbowl-winning left tackle. He's been more spotty at Right Tackle. I think because he's huge, he gets misclassified as a mauler and placed at RT, where he wasn't amazing in Oakland. His skill set is best at LT. He's an elite pass blocking tackle and an average run blocker.

what

No and neither is the team

what dumb thread

Picking up his option was predicted and by no means an indication they plan to stick with him long term. Was more a function of a dearth of alternative options and also the position he plays.

So, Wynn is so good that he is worth $10M as a LG? What is the average pay for a starting LG? Is that for someone expected to play all the games? What about a top 10 LG? Where is $10M on the list?
