Trader Dan is out...

The morning after the Boston Celtics were eliminated from the NBA playoffs by the Brooklyn Nets, major changes are coming to the franchise.

The team announced on Wednesday that GM and president of basketball operations Danny Ainge is retiring after 18 years. Current head coach Brad Stevens is being promoted to replace him as president of basketball ops. The news was first reported by Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes and ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Stevens moving up is the bigger news, opening up the head coach role.

you kinda saw it coming (Ainge), but never thought Brad could be gone...and to the front office no less. Brad Stevens is a smart human with a great basketball IQ, so I am really excited about the future. You could tell he was burnt out and the players just tuned him out. They need the get the next coaching hire correct. Ainge is a Celtic through and through and did an outstanding job for the franchise. These jobs of GM and Coach have an expiration date and the time was now for a change. Excited about the future

Hiring Stevens was a lazy hire. I think it's a mistake to hire a coach that was tuned out by the players. And then make him president of basketball operations. They should have cleaned house from top to bottom. It's a sad day for me as far as ainge is concerned. Recently he made a lot of moves that didn't work. And his time was up. But he was the last connection to red and the Celtics glory days. And I'm sorry to see him go. i think this team is a complete disaster. And they won't be hanging any banners anytime soon.

Complete disaster? At least we have two All-Star anchors, one of whom is a legitimate superstar. Stevens brings continuity to the table instead of blowing things up while JT and JB are approaching their prime. Let’s see what Stevens can do instead of proclaiming it lazy and a mistake the very day he got the job.

I’m very interested to see how Brad approaches the roster and what moves are made in the offseason. I imagine we need to unload Kemba somehow if possible.

I just hope that the Brad doesn't acquire any of Danny's putrid drafting habits.

Danny did a nice job of getting Brown and Tatum.

He tried swinging for the fences with Kyrie and Gordo.

It didn't work out but it is what it is.

This team needs another major retooling.

Danny is not the guy to do it.

Neither is Stevens.

Ugh.

Looking at Ainge as a GM i compare him to the hated Lakers. The Lakers Front Office has run rings around the celticcs and ainge over his tenure. Although its hard for the celtics to compete for FA's because of LA's nice weather and being the mecca's of movies and media.
If this team were the Knicks, Nets, Pistons Ainge would have done a good job, but this is the CELTICS, i expect better.

Ainge was just unlucky the last few years. It was just bad luck with Gordon. That injury damaged the shape of the team forever. Brought envy and favoritism talk to a young and gelling team.

I will probably flip flop on this a hundred times, but I hope they got this right moving Stevens to GM. I'm sure the owners know better than me, but it seems rushed and wish they would have taken some time to do a proper search for the next GM. I'm not at all impressed with the coaching candidate that have been mentioned. If they don't get this 100% right, it will set the franchise back 20 years because I don't think Tatum will sick around...Stevens needs to get rid of Walker and Smart then bring in Bradley Beal to make Tatum feel comfortable.

what is everyone's thoughts/opinions of Kara Lawson as the next coach? I have been hearing her name thrown around today. That would be a historic hire to say the least

No gm in the league will touch kemba. He has a full max contract. And a chronic knee injury similar to Dustin pedroia. The Celtics are stuck with him. Unless they want to give a team a first rd pick to take his messed up knee and his huge contract. Smart is all they have to offer. And he only has a year left on his deal. So don't expect a significant return for him. If you really want to shake things up. One of the legends in their own minds has to be traded.

Have you popped open the bottle of champagne yet?

Treated myself to a spliff & a Sam Adams Light...

Danny had to go, the sooner the better...Too many ****ups...For every good move (trading Garnett & Pierce to Crooklyn), there was at least one bad move (drafting Olynyk instead of Giannis on the very same night as the trade...that one particular ****up was franchise-DESTROYING)...He really should've been fired after the imbecilic, catastrophic 2019 draft...

Don Sweeney's next on the hit parade...Speaking of franchise-destroying, I present to you his 2015 draft...

That would be horrible beyond description.
I mean I have no judgement on her coaching ability. I do have some doubts about the whole “how will NBA players respond to a female head coach”. Then if she doesn’t pan out you have the whole can of worms on firing the first female head coach and the optics and crap surrounding that.

I think that sucks and hope she does find a HC job somewhere in the NBA eventually, just not here.

It depends on the team…..just like Steve Nash works for the nets because the players coach themselves, he would not work in many other locations. There are some idiot HCs out there.

the Lakers front office is going to have to deal with one and done……besides, the players chose the team not the front office
