Not surprised at all that the Patriots didn’t take an interior Olineman in the draft or an OT early. The 53 is going to be tight, so keeping only 8 offensive linemen is a very real possibility. With the rules allowing 2 players a week to be promoted, they would be able to promote from the practice squad if needed to have 8 Olinemen on the 48 man game roster.

As for the secondary, we should not overlook CB Michael Jackson who seemed to flash in training camp after being traded to the Patriots by Matt Patricia and the Lions. There was speculation that he might make the 53 last year.

Owenu stepped in and played RT very well. Don’t necessarily need 4ot’s
There was a span of about 15 years where the Patriots carried 4 OTs on the roster. The 53 man roster. In 9 straight years they used at least 4 OTs.

What's f'in hilarious is that the OP couldn't be bothered to acknowledge any of the draft picks.

OL - They added Sherman who is projected to be inside. Besides Cajuste, they also have Cunningham who is an OT/OG, Martin who is an IOL, and Najee Toran who is an IOL. Do I expect them to look at someone else? YEP. I was disappointed that they didn't sign David Moore out of Grambling because I thought he'd be a great understudy to Karras and would be a better center than Karras eventually.

WR: How has this NOT been addressed? They added Agholor, Bourne, and Nixon (draftee). They also had Kristian Wilkerson, Devin Smith, Isaiah Zuber, Olszewski, Meyers, and Harry.

In addition to WR, the Pats spent a TON on TE by adding Henry and Smith to Asiasi and Keene (3rd rounders last year).

The hand wringing over Gilmore and Jackson is somewhat understandable, but it's NOT "End of the world". Especially since Gilmore has stated he wants to stay.

It's not even June 1st and the Negative Nancies are already running around..

The OP flat out ignores anything that destroys the entire premise of this thread.

The only problem with that is that there is a LIMIT (3) on how many times they can be prompted unless they put in the special Covid provisions again. If you want to promote them a 4th time, they are then subject to waivers if they're sent back down. And the Patriots have lost more than a few players to the waiver wire over the years.

This idea that they'll only keep 8 (which has only happened twice since Belichick got here and only because of late injuries) says exactly you has been paying attention over the past 20 year.

Depending on where McGrone is in his rehab, the Pats can put him on the NFI list as soon as he's signed.

I don't think the 53 is going to be as "tight" as you think.

Guys on the outside looking in (IMHO):

JJ Taylor, Dan Vitale, Matt LaCosse, Najee Toran, Korey Cunningham, Yodney Cajuste, Isaiah Zuber, Devin Smith, Kristian Wilkerson, Tre Nixon, Bill Murray, Tashon Bower, Carl Davis, Nick Thurman, Akeen Spence, Bentley, Jennings, Hall, Michael Jackson, Dee Virgin, Myles Bryant, Brandon King, Roberto Aguayo, Devin Ross, Marcus Martin, Montravious Adams, Rashod Berry, Brandon Bolden

I think this is an accurate list.

Brown, Owenu, Andrews, Mason, Wynn
Reserves
Karras C/G
Herron T
Sherman G/T
If we carry 9, not a certainty. Cajuste

So, Herron is our #7, a lock.
And Sherman needs no competition? He's a 6th rounder. They rarely make the team, even if it worked out in 2000 and last year.

I agree with almost this entire list.

I think that STer Bolden isn't on the outside looking in. I notice that you cut him twice. I'm not sure of Jennings.

So, Cajuste might replace Herron or be our 4th OT. That doesn't change the fact that Karras is our ONE backup for 3 positions.
He's not. Sherman, like Wynn, can play guard.

Hmm.. Forgot about Aguayo. He went back to his unorthodox kicking style from FSU. Notice that he did not miss a kick in 2019 preseason with the Chargers. He may beat Folk in TC. This team if all potentials pan out can come out of the gates firing on all cylinders. Who do we play first? I have lost track on a lot of things lately. I use to know who every team picked in the first two rounds, now, I don't remember anything after 17th pick of the first round.
I think Yodney Cajuste is also going to have a good off season. Dan Vitale, Bolden are more in than outside.
edit: I see now that the schedule is not out, so I don't feel so bad anymore.

I would be shocked if Bolden got cut, and more shocked if Jennings got cut after 1 season with no training camp and where he was put all over the place.

I don't think keeping only 8 OL on 53 is a very real possibility esp. since by new rule they can carry extra active OL =8.
Promotions from PS are limited to just 2 per player in a season so on a 17 game season + playoffs this flexibility is actually very limited.
Pats carried 9 OL on 53 and additional 3 on PS in 2020. So id go at least with 9 in speculations.

But this is beside the point at the moment. I know jumping the gun is favourite sport on this board but the matter at hand is 90 man roster and selection process for TC roster.

Looking at current roster and what Patriots normally carry to TC . 2 positions are shorthanded even taking the lowest usual number: CB and IOL.

re OL they normally cary 15-16 players. There are 12 currently on the roster if we generously include Toran. So they will add at least 3 before TC starts. One of them should be Eleumunor, they have Ferentz on the shadow roster as well..

On the other side they have 10 IDLs currently (not including Wise) and they normally carry 7-8.

So a lot of churning ahead with OLs coming in..

1) Mills is our backup free safety, and will likely start in 2022.
2) Gilmore could be traded at any time, and is on the last year of this contract.
3) Jackson is on the last year of his contract, after there was no long-term contract.
4) Jones is a fine nickel back.
5) Williams and Bryant have shown little.

If we can count on our top 4 for the year, then we are fine. Personally, I would like to add Sherman.
Where did you decide what mills rile will be? He is a corner and a safety and has played more corner.
He is more likely McCourtys replacement than an inactive safety based upon the contract.

Why do people keep saying there was no training camp last year?

Would not be surprised to see one Jermaine Eluemanor brought back in the fold. Just a hunch.

I'm fine with Karras and OK with Herron. That makes 7.

We are allowed to have 8 OL's active. We usually carry 9, sometimes 8 or 10, plus a couple on the Practice Squad.

If we are OK with Onwenu and Herron as being our 3rd and 4th OT's, then we have a need at IOL.

IOL BACKUPS IF THE STARTING OT's ARE HEALTHY
1) Karras
2) ???

IOL BACKUPS IF ONE OT IS OUT (AND ONWENU MOVES TO OT
1) ???
2) ???

OG GUARTD BACKUPS IF ONE OF THE CENTERS IS OUT
1) ???

2) ???
===========
All we have for the backups spots are Toran and our 6th rounder. I expect us to add two.
We have Marcus Martin who is an IOL.

The context was whether we should sign a CB.
Are you suggesting that because Mills plays both safety and corner that we shouldn't sign a cornerback?

Im suggesting calling mills a backup free safety is wrong and he is more likely the JMac replacement so yes the need for a corner for 2021 isn’t that high.
