DRAFT Patriots trade up and select DT Christian Barmore

Get an offensive tackle and be done with the draft . For rest use udfa or rollover to next year. Where is the Harry trade?can we move up to end of second round by trading 96 and harry?

What I wrote about him a few weeks ago (below this paragraph). If his footwork, patience (has to learn to show colors, peek) and effort he could be a great player. Bama took him out on run downs, not much experience there. Had a second round grade on him so value is there. He was on my board, then off but he should fit here.

I wouldn't be surprised at all tbh. Barmore is kind of a missing piece?? Like we have a lot of run stoppers but need some pass rush up the middle. That's his speciality rn. Pretty good, natural feel for where, how to attack. Good at getting in those creases and knifing through the line. + hands. Too often it's just his "feel" so to speak but he doesn't have the best plan every snap. He wins with a lot of talent little plan or variety. Not a bad thing at all. Footwork is hit or miss at times. Not many snaps against the run. Lots of potential. I see a cross between Tim Settle & Dalvin Thompson. I like him a lot, have a 2nd on him. Just think he's not good value at 15 and he'll go before we get a good chance at him.

He's really close to being on there. Should I add him? Anyone else think he's going to be available for a trade back and Bill would pull the trigger?

The highlights you've watched?
youtube. He was very active but I didn't like what I saw of guys running past his gap etc. Ole Miss is the most recent clip I watched and I didn't really like it. I clearly see the pass rush potential though.

6’5” 310, great run stopper, and could get after the QB (8 sacks despite the Tide using a Dline rotation). I mocked him to the Pats at 15. This is a GREAT pick. I guess Kraft was right, the draft approach seems to have changed. Great job so far.

As I stated in the 2nd round discussion thread, what was our biggest weaknesses last year ? Poor QB play and stopping the run. We addressed both weaknesses. As well as a great free agency period. Also add some of the 2020 opt outs returning. I’m really psyched about 2021, way more than I was back in February 2021.

Mike Lombardi has nailed the Patriots' draft so far. He told us they weren't going to trade up for Fields and that the biggest remaining need was 3-tech.

If ya like 'em, get 'em. F### the price. For too long the mantra has been "good value." I prefer good players.
It's clear the team has had a top tier talent drain these last few years. Quality over quantity rules in 2021

What were/are your thoughts on him?
Just posted a few above.

He's got a great jump. Guessing or not he's got legit burst. First few steps have all his weight behind him. Plays with hips first so he gets and wins with proper leverage.

One thing I want my IDL to do is take advantage of space in the middle and work 1/2 man like an edge rusher. He can do that. Not much of a plan but he's got some explosion but more importantly in this case he has enough wiggle and flexibility to work that 1/2 man relationship and utilize his gifts.

++ hands, active, violent.

Mentioned it above but his feel, timing and aim when rushing is really good. Like he's very good at getting on you at your weakest point or moment after a little hesitation move. Needs to develop some counters and work on his variety but those are plenty fixable.

Regarding run defense he's just not there yet. Needs to learn and understand the mindset. He's trying win with every movement. Trying to beat his man with raw quicks and power and that'll backfire in the run game. He'll lose position, esp moving laterally. He has to clean that up. Head on he can handle doubles but needs to play with more patience, just make the stop. Don't try to win the whole game. Like he knows how to handle doubles but will make dumb mistakes. Too often try to split, play backside instead of focusing on one man. Mainly a patience and footwork thing but I'm not an expert.

He's scheme versatile. Classic 3T but once he's a but more developed I'm shading at 0 on passing downs.

This was a great pick. Great value. Young prospect. He could a real impact this year playing limited snaps on passing downs. Great pick, we needed pass rush up front and got arguably the best in the draft.

I think they'll be very patient with him and use him as an interior situational pass rusher his first year and be on the field about 30% of the defensive snaps. I think that would be a realistic percentage. By all accounts (including yours ;) ) he is exceedingly raw and its not entirely a sure thing that he will buy into the intense culture here. He needs to work on his techniques and become more of a professional than just a physical talent. His value to the run defense is probably a couple of years down the road. The thought of him and Cowart attacking the middle of the OL and pushing the pocket is exciting.

Like someone said earlier, we have a ton of run stoppers already. (oh that was you ;) ) We needed a dynamic presence in the interior of our pass rush. Now we have the talent we need. It will be several months before we find out if we have the player.

So he graded out as a 2nd round prospect for me (future starter/1st year contributor) but I took him off my Pats Big Board bc I didn't think he'd be around when we pick in the 2nd. I didn't think we'd get him at 15 or round one and thought he'd get scooped up before we had a chance but I was wrong. We definitely liked him a lot to trade up. This is a Bill/Matty P pick imo.

When he showed up (key factor), he was supposedly "unblockable" like in Aaron Donald 'unblockable". The issue of course was when and IF he showed up.

This is a classic BB 2nd rounder. He's swinging for the fences. If Barmore ends up becoming a "prototypical Patriot" with a red jacket, then he wins. If he turns out to be like that late first round DT he got about 5 years ago, who's name has already been relegated to the dust bin of history, the critics will lump him with all the 2nd round failures of the past decade (even those who actually weren't failures
Ken, I think it is a good pick, but as you say, I think it is a gamble. He has excellent natural talent, but not quickness like Donald (perhaps no other NFL DL does). And, he was a bit of a late bloomer. RS freshman season (admittedly competing with a very talented DL). Decent but not dazzling contributions next year, and then as a starter just got better and better as a starter as the year went on until he was defensive MVP in the national championship game.

As an AL fan / resident (as well as a NEP fan), I am "all in" with the AL Mac Jones pick, great pick / gamble and certainly a perfect match for NEP.

In contrast, for Barmore, I'm not really sure, I agree with you that my opinion of Barmore is: "we will see". If continues to develop with good hard coaching like he did in last year (and especially late in the year especially the playoffs) at AL, he could be amazing. But, he isn't really a classic BB type.

Really like this pick too. Love that they have a legit big to provide push up the middle on passing downs. Too often the bigs seem one dimensional for the Pats. Great or good at stopping the run but not so good on passing downs. To compensate they sometimes slide an edge player into the middle on obvious passing downs. Now they have a legit 6'5" 310lbs DT that can rush the passer.

Nfl.com had him rated 13th overall, one behind Wilson and one ahead of lance. He was the BPA at that time And probably wouldn’t make it to the pats without the trade up. Like this pick. Highlights show he is violent, collapsing the pocket, moving people.

Ah, didn't realize you removed prospects based on an expectation they wouldn't be available so I got confused when I pulled up your spreadsheet after the pick and couldn't find Barmore. Thought it meant you didn't see him as draftable lol. This makes more sense.
