Idle thoughts - Jimmy G, Cam and Stiddy

Also, cam newtons best years in carolina he had Greg olsen as his #1 target. So, he clearly loves to throw to the tight ends. last year he had izzo.....going from izzo to Jonnu smith/Hunter henry is a huge jump in talent that should help him as well.

I agree 100 percent.

my only concern is does newton have enough arm left to get the ball to our tight ends.

im not talking about scheme. yes the run wide zone scheme

they are a run FIRST team with JimmyG

NE was a run first team in 2018 with Tom Brady, who can't even run himself, and won the SB. If you've got the line and backs and scheme to do it, then you do it. But for it to work, the QB has to hit the pass when the matchup is there, be able to diagnose when the defense is cheating and get into a better play, and score 7 when in the red zone.

Am I right that only 3 starting QBs last season (Broncos, Ravens and us) tested positive with COVID?

If yes, I want to give a break to Cam irrespective of horrible his throws and decision making were.

Not sure how many could have handled getting hit with COVID when on a new team with a complex scheme and with no practice.

Edit - disregard my post pls. I thought you were referring to Cam and hence chimed in.
To me it feels like Covid would definitely impact an athlete's decision making a lot more than other problems like bouncing passes to receivers. That's more a physical problem.

I'm sure new weapons will help a bit but I'm not optimistic we'll ever see anything resembling the MVP Cam ever again. I just hope he's good enough.

As for Stidham... the idea that he's somehow earned a chance or he's entitled to an NFL start is weird to me. Since when is a 4th round draft pick QB entitled to a chance at anything? How come Ryan Mallett didn't get a chance? What about Tebow's "chance"? At least he won a playoff game in this league, that's more than anything Stidham has done.

i would trade 3 #1’s for Watson and accept a one year suspension.
Ben got 8 games. Doubt Watson gets more than that.

If he assaulted these women I wouldn’t take him for 3 firsts to be my QB. Well I would then immediately release him.
If he has a touch Fetish where if A beautiful woman touches him he gets aroused well than he’s just a typical straight man who is horny.
That can be reeled in but Would take a ton of PR.

they were?

2018 Pats - 54.9% pass 45.1% run

2019 49ers 48.6% pass 51.4% run

im strictly speaking more run than pass

No way Kraft is going to have their Franchise player being someone accused of sexual assault of masseuse’s.
Just when everyone stopped asking questions and totally forgot about his masseuse issues.

"Very good" is a stretch. Also there is no comfier system for a QB than Shanahan's.
You know who’s system is also comfy for Jimmy G? This one. Strong OL, solid run game, and the weapons at TE and WR are night and day from last years O. Plus with years in the system under his belt the learning curve shouldn’t be as big.

I don't know if it will be better or not, but those bounced passes, at least a couple I recall, were because of indecision and footwork.

They ran more in 2018, but they were not a running team in 2018. The pats have not been a running team with Brady in a long time. Maybe 2004. To me you cannot be just a strict run team, because then you get into what the ravens are dealing with now. At some point you have to pass to win, and if you can't your run is going to end rather abruptly.

I'm not gonna go plow through the stats game by game, but starting late in the season they changed to be a run-first team, and in their playoff run they completely buried the Chargers on the ground, ran well on the Chiefs, and eventually wore down a good Rams defense in the SB on the strength of the run game. It wasn't for the whole season, agreed, but BB figured out by year end that the best Pats team that year was as a running offense, even with Tom Brady as his QB who in retrospect still had great arm talent.

So to the poster who was saying that JG is a mediocre QB as evidenced by Shanahan having a run-first offense, it proves no such thing.

The 2018 Patriots post-season was an extremely run-focused attack and paired with elite defense.

There was one game where they focused on the run in late season - it was the Bills game that we won 24-12. If I remember, there was some weather involved, and Bills were coming on strong

The Chargers game Brady passed for 343 yards - it was a pass heavy game plan until they were up 35-7
The Chiefs game Brady passed for 348 yards. The game plan was run heavy, but it was not run first.

The super bowl may be the only game where they went run heavy out of necessity because Brady struggled.

Your assertions are incorrect but you dont want to plow through the facts? 2018 Patriots were not a run first team, nor a run heavy team. There were certain situations that called for it.

Like I said, this only applied to the last couple of rs season games and the playoffs, they definitely changed their style at year end.

The SD game was the opposite as I recall: NE snuffed them by running from the 1st series on, then poured it on with play action passing as the game went on. But the running was the story of that game.

The SB game plan from the outset was to run and wear down LA, it wasn't some on the fly change cause Brady was having troubles. Our OL matched up well against these teams compared to our WR matchups, and we went with the running game by design, even with a great QB at the helm.

They had 343 passing yards in that game. Not sure that is run first. The chiefs game was a shootout. Chargers game we had 44 pass attempts and 33 run attempts. Chiefs we had 46 pass attempts 48 run attempts. Superbowl we had 35 pass attempts and 33 run attempts. That seemed pretty balanced. Now the run game was working great, which means use it for sure, but it was not a run first gameplan with that many pass attempts. Last year? That was a run first game plan.

As far as JG, JG is what he is. I think he can be good enough to win you some games, but that is about it, at some point the niners decided they would just not let JG even throw the ball. JG had like 8 pass attempts in a playoff game, I would say that is not close to what the pats did. Can you imagine a playoff game in which Brady only had 8 pass attempts?

The 2018 Patriots post-season was an extremely run-focused attack and paired with elite defense.
We had more pass attempts in that postseason than run attempts. As I said in another post, the run game worked well, but it was not focused. brady averaged 41 pass attempts per game and had 955 yards passing in 3 games.

The postseason was indeed run heavy there’s no denying that but at the end of the day our offense was presented with multiple 3rd and longs where it was either convert or go home and only one QB in the league was making them all.
