NEW ARTICLE: Are the Patriots Possibly AFC Championship Contenders? Suddenly, it's Not as Crazy as it Sounds

You cannot win in this league without a special QB, its really that simple, at least not consistently. A great QB makes others around them better, not needs guys to make them better. If you are saying we can win in spite of our QB, I just cant buy that. Can they have a better record? For sure, but to be what we were, its not going to happen until the QB position is taken care of.

I have seen teams win without a "special QB"...some examples of SB winners/losers without a pro-bowl level QB:

2017 Eagles - Foles
2015 Broncos - P.Manning who had to be carted out there.
2011 Giants - E. Manning
2008 Giants - E. Manning
2004 Panthers - Delhomme
2002 Bucaneers - B.Johnson
2000 Ravens - T.Dilfer
1999 Falcons - C. Chandler
1995 Steelers - O'Donnell

Funny thing....Brady is 1-4 against this list.....

So, 9/50 of the QB's in the SB the last 25 years weren't pro-bowlers....

============

Yes, a special QB makes things a whole lotta easier...no doubt. But we do not need a special QB...we just need COMPETENCY.

Give me a guy who can do a 65%, 4K yards, 26 TD's, and 10 INT's with this cast...and I am fairly confident that this team is a contender.

Maybe, we'll see what Bill can do with an average QB. So far, evidence doesn't support this but anything is possible.

A few things: 2000 Ravens had #2 all time defense. 2002 Bucs had #5 all time defense. 2015 Broncos had #10 all time defense. Falcons and Panthers never won a SB. So you really only have Foles and Manning. We know why Foles won and it wasn't because of Brady.

So in the 50 year history of football....anyway, as I said, you cannot win in this league without a special QB. You listed Eli in there, but the thing is, in those playoffs in both those years Eli was special. Delhomes didnt win a superbowl, neither did chandler, neither did O'donnell in fact O'Donnell cost them a superbowl. If you are going to try and win a superbowl without a especial QB, then you better have a super team. Also, how many of those on that list ever came back besides Eli?

On your second point, you say give me a guy who can give you 65% 4 k yards 26 td's and 10 ints....and who might that be because that would be a pretty special QB.

Pats right now are fighting for the 6th and 7th spot. They don't have a realistic chance.

KC, BUF and BAL are all clearly better. The questuon is are the Pats the 4th best team? Maybe. I don't see the team right now jumping up to claim that spot. Titans got worse imo. Colts should be but we have no idea how they'll look at QB. Dolphins are only okay and I don't know if they improved. ECT...
Last season, we beat Baltimore, should have beat Buffalo and nearly beat KC even with Hoyer but for the officials.

2018 Cam Newton: 68%, 3,400, 24TD, 13 INTs in 14 games.

This team isn't going anywhere with that slug behind center - Stidham or a rookie is the clear choice to get this team into contention, the only thing this team will do with SuperSuck is set the team closer to mid pack than to the playoffs - Of course if Watson can be dealt here then it changes everything but thats doubtful

please go be a eagles fan. Your demeanor at attitude are much better suited for a philly fan. This board is full of arrogant loudmouths, but you might get the medal for biggest douche. I’m willing to bet you’re an alcoholic *******, as all your post come off as a drunk rant.

people like you can make daily life suck!

Are you saying that Bill can win a SB with Cam? You realize that Cam came woefully short in the SB, the year he won the MVP right?

Of course we should be contenders.

Two years ago the Pats were a contender lead by their defense with a barely functioning offense. The defense this upcoming season could be as good as it was last year. This team is going to contend by running the ball, and playing elite defense with good special teams (complimentary football).

I thought Cam was decent the first 3 games before he got COVID so I am hopeful he can perform better this year. He's certainly more likely to succeed this year than last. I expect them to take a lot of pressure off of him by running the ball and the defense setting up good field position. I'm hoping the Pats trade up for Fields or Lance but if they don't I think they can still contend.

Absolutely. Superbowl 50 was a bad game by his standards, but doesn't mean he can't win a SB.

Any stats over the last 20 years regarding top-end QB being a necessity to play in the SB will be great skewed by the fact that a quarter of the QBs in those 20 years was a guy named Brady.

How messed up is that?

Even if Cam starts the season as nr 1, there is no reason at this point to believe BB has him written in stone for the season.

if Stidham or a new high draft pick (or other FA) can be groomed/trained by game 9 and cam can go at a 9-7 pace with these tools; an 11 to 13 win season (of 17) doesn’t seem unreasonable. We do have a 3D place schedule too.
Did you watch last season?

I agree ....it’s Stidham time, baby!!!!! :)))

I am not so sure it is Stidham's time but his coach, Palmer, who is the QB consultant hired by the Pats, says that Stidham is ready to compete finally. He said that Stidham was the most underqualified QB to ever come into the League, so it has been a struggle to get him ready. If Stidham doesn't make it he knows he is done with this league and the Pats.
