Path cleared for Jimmy's return? [SF trades for #3 pick]

If SF is adamant about keeping JG then they are not drafting Jones who is ready to start. Seems more like Lance is the target to me.
The only way I can see jimmy coming back to the Pats is if he were to get released. The Pats are not trading for him with his current contract. He would be stupid to take a pay cut so probably get that idea out of play. Plus he has a no trade clause so he doesn’t need to go anywhere if he doesn’t want.
Not sure I understand the thinking that Jones is ready to start and fields isn’t.

At least he had some hits in the past about qb rankings. This makes me slight more hopefully we still can land the qbotf than i was yesterday after the trade

dito or Lance, like both
My point is Simms had no insight into what the 49ers are thinking. He is guessing with no more info that we have

Goff & Wentz day 1 starters
Trubisky backs up Glennon to start season
Mayfield backs up Taylor to start season
Darnold day 1 starter
Burrow day 1 starter
Tua backs up Fitzpatrick to start season

Top 3 picks either start the season or backup a low paid starter before getting in. The 49ers can do that with Minshew, Smith, etc.

The funniest thing was schefter reporting they won’t trade him, saying this isn’t a smoke screen, this isn’t a ploy to get leverage, while the exact way they would create either would be to get schefter to report that. Amazing after all these years he doesn’t understand the power of his leaks and why people give him info.
schefter knows he's just a tool for management, and he's built a career on that

I did not mean to imply that but it's probably bc of scheme fit /ceiling pro ready etc..reasons that the 49ers are taking him over lance or fields.

Shanahan:

Constructs offense around running the ball & YAC. Angry that offense isn’t conductive to coming from behind or passing out of shotgun.

McGlinchey - great run blocker, mediocre pass blocker
Tomlinson - great run blocker, mediocre pass blocker
Richburg 2019, Mack present - ditto

Pass catchers during Jimmy G’s 49ers tenure:

2017 - Kittle, Goodwin, Garcon, Taylor
2018 - Kittle, Bourne, Garcon, Pettis
2019 - Kittle, Bourne, Samuel (rookie), Sanders (midseason)
2020 - Kittle, Samuel, Aiyuk (rookie), Bourne

Not sure how you are suppose to light it up through the air. Jimmy G was still top 5-10 in passer rating, comp pct, YPA & most advanced metrics.

49ers w/ Jimmy G: 22-8
49ers without Jimmy G: 7-27

Besides the injury concerns I don’t understand how a fan wouldn’t want him considering he’s led top 10 offenses with arguably worse weapons than the pats & won at a high level.
But “besides the injury concerns” is the entire issue.

Right but he literally says this is not a smoke screen or a ploy to drive up the price. As if he thought there is no way they would possibly use him.

a bit inconcistency when on field as well i would say
I don’t agree.
I think the concern is why did shanahan not trust him in the post season. I don’t think his play indicates he shouldn’t have.

whats our other option though? go with cam newton and hope he improves? Stidham? Fight all the teams who want a QB in the draft to get the 4th or 5th best guy?

not saying Jimmy G is a perfect scenario. he has warts and injury history. But, if he stays healthy he raises the ceiling for this team from what it would be with cam newton. you add an above average QB (which jimmy is) to this roster and you can win some games here and make a run in the playoffs.

IMO where there's smoke there's fire. It's not like Garoppolo is a Watson or Wilson level guy where rumors of a trade for him spark league-wide interest. It's Jimmy Garoppolo. The fact that the rumors have gone on and on and on tells me that someone (Bill? Yee?) is feeding it. If it was completely impossible with no chance, or very little chance, it wouldn't be getting fed constantly like this. Could be wrong but that's my sense of it.
Or people are just trolling Patriots fans.

I can't remember where i heard it but they said basically availability and making some mistakes with the football are their biggest concerns with JG

And I’m not saying he might not be the best option. Just saying the worry is how good he is doesn’t matter if he’s on ir.

Again, we are discussing this from the standpoint that SF doesn’t want to trade him. They may. But if they keep him it’s because they want him to start until
the rookie is ready. If that’s what they want to do then he has no leverage to force a trade.
I’m not saying they won’t trade him, I’m saying it’s silly to think if they don’t want to that Jimmy has any ability to demand they do.
I think he has more leverage than you're saying and less than others are implying.

"Who will the team play for?" is a big part of coaching. The best I've seen it handled was with Smith and Mahomes in KC, but Smith was already established in his 13th year when the Chiefs leaped up to grab Mahomes. And Smith is legendary in KC for his attitude in that process (it's rare for a star QB to act like that...see Bledsoe/Brady or Brady/Jimmy, etc.).

Jimmy isn't in the same position as Alex Smith was in. Smith had maybe one more decent contract and was skiing down the back sid eof hte mountain. Jimmy's going into his eighth year, but he's only played in 48 NFL games - he's busted because of injuries in SF, but with one solid year and a SB appearance. The potential is still there for him to shine, but he's running out of time and he and Don Yee both know it.

If he goes out there this year and things aren't perfect for him, his thoughts of being an A-level QB are pretty much over, and his next contract, which is coming fast either way, will reflect that.

If he goes out there this year and lights it up, SF is set up for a major controversy that could close their window. Again, this isn't the KC situation (Jimmy has too much to lose) and the last thing Shanahan wants right now is a locker room that splits on the QB. That would put even more pressure on the rookie and/or a $24million player sitting on the bench is like dead money at the end of a dynasty.

Jimmy knows this and Shanahan knows this. Better for everyone that they move him, and I expect that Jimmy's agent feels the same way. In fact, I'd wager that Don Yee is begging Shanahan to move him to a place where he'll be "THE GUY" and where the coach believes in him and will give him the Mulligan he needs.

Yes. It's not impossible that Fields/Lance/Jones opens the year as the #2, but probably not for the entire season. If that's the goal, why pay $24M for a guy only playing a partial season when you could flip that guy for a 2nd rounder, save all that money, replace him with a far cheaper veteran, and use your savings to fill some of the remaining holes on your roster to improve the team around the QBOTF.

Simms thinks the 49ers take Jones

Lynch using his buddy Simms to lay a trap for Bill, betting he sells out to move up to 4 with the hope his "guy" is there. Bill, even at almost 70 yo can't be as dumb as some of the fans that fall for this nonsense.

No. but it seems like the 49ers want to get what they spent for Garoppolo or even more and that's just not gonna happen. I mean if it's a 1st or 2nd for Garoppolo or a 4th for Minshew or Mariotta I'm taking the latter.

They're probably already going to face this problem. Their best offensive player Kittle is in a bromance with Garoppolo. I doubt he'll be happy about this. If you start Jimmy again this year and he plays excellent, you're gonna then turn around and dump him?

Exactly.

What does the trade look like then?

It is funny that some of the posters on here are completely adamant that this or that will happen, and this qb obviously sucks and these other two are so much better. After one and two, whichever way they go, there is a drop off and all the qb's have blemishes. Assuming that 3-4-5 will go the way Kiper or Bacon or Simms or whomever says they will has a pretty slim chance of being right, especially since everyone has them all over the place. Bill may only like Jones, or whomever. I can't imagine he ranks 3-4-5 all the same and wants them all equally. So if the one he wants is available at pick whatever, he may well move up to get him, but I don't think that will happen until the draft is going on. If I had to place odds it is 33% jimmyG 33% stay with Cam and Stidham and 33% trade up in the draft to get a rookie.
