Path cleared for Jimmy's return? [SF trades for #3 pick]

The Pats are in the driver's seat on this now. Just wait to see what SF does. No need to offer them anything. If they want to be rid of him this year, let them come to you, looking for something in return. If they want to keep him this year, then it isn't happening anyway.

so the fins move from #3 overall to #6 and gain a 2023 1st rounder

That would be a helluva locker room. Jimmy, you have no guaranteed money. Train your backup.

Don't see it. Really don't.

Depends on how they view their team this year. Think they can make a run? The motivation for Jimmy is to play well and try to win a Super Bowl. They're not going to ask him to teach the kid (I doubt Brady took an active role in Jimmy's development in NE).

When Fields, Lance and Jones end up better players than Jimmy ever was and he spends most of his time here injured I hope Bill is happy.

And yes, I’m being dramatic.

9ers would have to trade him before the draft or that window may shut as they don't know if Bill will take a QB with the 15th pick.

Or JG sucks this year and loses his job week 5 to Fields, or he get injured again ....in either scenario you get nothing for him next offseason. Seems like a overpay by SF for sure but a little bit less of an overpay if they end of trading him to a certain Northeast team for a mid-2nd.

That's the logical thinking path.

A $25M lame duck doesn't get them anywhere. The other variable is the no trade clause. How many teams are in play?

One of these teams may regret the trade. 9ers may score with a big time QB with Miami regretting moving out. Or 9ers take a massive bust.

I think it’s pretty clear that if we want to trade up into the top 10 for a QB, the price will likely have to include a future 1st.
Yeah the market is set at that. And honestly, it’s not worth it. The first 3 QB’s are gone. So you either have to love the scraps of the 4th overall QB or be willing to fork over a fortune to get to 4 or 5 for Sewell or Smith

Not sure I believe this, they have Hurts, signed Flacco the other day and have huge holes all across their roster. They need picks...

There is no way the Pats are giving away #15 for a player that SF wants to replace badly and that is on a 25M contract this year.
I think you are right. Jimmy is plan A if the cost is right. He will be either cut or traded for a 2. If not, the draft is the plan, and that does not mean 1st round either. With what SF just paid, we are not moving up.

There’s no downside. In Jimmy you have a safety net as you develop a young guy. Now he’s in a prove it year so if he plays amazing you can get a haul for him or keep him and deal the rookie. If he sucks, who cares you just wait for the best deal from a desperate team

If you aren't a Jimmy G believer (and I am not), this gives me a sinking feeling. Here are the possibilities I can see from here:

  1. We trade up into the top 5 to get whatever leftover QB nobody else felt was worth drafting to that point. Really no assurance of success with that approach. If we're giving up all that capital to pick that early, I want it to be the actual target. Luckily, I suspect that trade is only made if the actual target falls to a pick we can get.
  2. SF relents into trading us Jimmy G, probably for way more trade capital than I'd be comfortable with. He gives us an improvement over Cam, but is still just Kirk Cousins-tier, and gets hurt midseason and we end up with Cam anyway.
  3. We just end up with Cam again and maybe draft a game changing linebacker or WR round 1.

I don't know how I'd rank these scenarios, but I definitely like the Jimmy G one the least.

I certainly think it’s more likely we’ll end up with Cam plus a mid round QB this year than it was a half hour ago. as you say, the price will be high to go up and get a QB (and five will likely go top 10 now) so it’s a case of seeing if they can pry Jimmy G free or tread water for a year as far as QBs go.

We may finally get Jimmy G/Bill vs Tom Brady on SNF this year!

This only makes sense if you think we can get him for very little in a trade, which I don't think will be the case.
