Player Signing Cam newton resigned 1 year deal

I'm thinking the Patriots are going to give up their #1 this year and their #1 in 2022 to trade up to grab Trey Lance at, say, #7.

Must have mixed up 2020 and 2021 then. My mistake, nevermind the dead money then.
No worries. SF only has $24m in cap space and holes to fill. Cutting or trading Jimmy puts them up near the top of the pack in total space. I really think a trade for Darnold makes the most sense for them. Jettison Jimmy and improve the roster overall.

Considering Garoppolo's injury history it probably makes sense to have Cam too. Both guys would probably start at different points. Although admittedly you play a little bit of a different style with Cam...

I think the odds that JG is on the '21 49ers are substantially higher than on the '22 team.

Why eat that much dead cap space when you don't even have a proven replacement yet. If I recall correctly next year they can move on from him for cheap.
They can move on from him cheaply this year.

If he remains with SF and has a good year, they'll lock him down. If he gets hurt again...well, why would anyone bother?

14 pages already - this should be enlightening and entertaining :)

In a normal year, $14m is not overpaying for a QB of Cam's caliber. Backup QBs make a little less than that.

BUT, this isn't a normal year.

Who was going to pay Cam more than $12m?

Washington is perhaps the only team that would even consider it.

We were negotiating against ourselves.

Either Bill is intentionally sabotaging the franchise, or he has truly lost it/gone senile. There is no in between.
I remember @Ring 6 said one week, I believe it was before the first or second Bills game (but the search function on this forum has gone to crap), that if Cam started the next week, he would officially think Bill has lost it. I’m beginning to think he was on to something.

I'll say it. This is the move that makes Bill's exit come a lot sooner than it could if it turns out to be a mess.
Agree 1000%. This is just a bad move all around. I would take any FA QB over Cam. This guarantees ANOTHER losing season. How long will Kraft want to deal with losing seasons.

This guy absolutely sucks. I don’t care if their paying him pennies, Cam doesn’t belong on an nfl roster, he was one of the worst qbs I’ve ever seen play.
What depressing news to wake up to.

Yes, I think he’s extremely popular with the players.
It has been kinda weird how many current and former NFL players have come out in his defense since late last year. Ty Law just did it this week.

HUH??? The Patriots didn't draft Cannon to play GUARD. They drafted him as an OT.. ONWENU is whom they drafted to play guard.
"Cannon, a 6'5" 358 pound mauler, played left tackle throughout his career with the Horned Frogs, but projects as a guard with the New England Patriots."

They had Light and a young Solder at the time. Maybe they hoped he could become the tackle in time, but many of his projections were at Guard.

This is clear that the Pats will be drafting a QB in the first round of the draft next month. Let's hope all the good ones aren't snapped up prior to the Pats' picking.

Saying one BB move makes the next move clear is quite daring :)
IF BB decides to go all in for one of the prospects for the first time - he'll know where and how to move up

And they’ve haven’t not been in over 5 years.
im on the side of this argument that it was pretty well established Brady was looking for a bit more longer term commitment than the yearly incentive laded one year deal. yes, on Mar 11th Brady wanted out. Prior to 2019 season...I think he would have taken a 2 or 3 year deal at avg 25m

I am far from being excited about the move, but, as many have said, if it means we are drafting a QB in the first round, I am fine with it.

Cam is a well-liked and a good leader. From all accounts, he works hard and brings a positive attitude. He can start year 1 and let the rookie develop a little bit. He would also be a good mentor, I think.

Cap hit seems low enough.

I mean, it is not exciting, but it can make sense depending on what the next move at QB is. If they do not draft an heir, then, I'll be a little worried.

Live and see, I guess.

It's pretty misleading to keep saying 14m everywhere. Last year it was 1m guaranteed and up to 7.5 total with incentives. It's almost certain this one is a lower base with incentives to a total of 14.

This makes me think Lance in a trade up, or Jaime Newman in the 2nd.
At least Cam will have a real off-season. And if they actually pay him 14M that will mean something went very well by the end of the season. I had honestly soured on the FA QB market with the prices.
