Player Signing Trent Brown trade to Pats

Onwenu played more snaps at tackle and was good.......you don't take a good tackle and make them a guard
Sure you do. Isn't that what the Pats did with Thuney?

I think back to many observers who thought that while Matt Light was a solid LT for the Pats for many years, he'd have been an all pro level LG. Now I'm not sure HOW the Pats will distribute the talent they now have on the OL, what I AM sure is that it will be one of the better OL's in the NFL. AND when you have a great OL, your offense will be good enough to keep you in every game you play.

Some people might think that FA QB's might shy away from coming to NE because of the lack of receiver talent. But here's the thing. When you have a great OL your QB will have a great running game, which makes passing the ball that much easier. When you have a great OL, the QB will have an extra second to find an open receiver, and WITH that extra second even a mediocre NFL receiver is more likely to get open.

So as of today, when QB's are looking for a safe haven why NOT come to NE where not only will you have the time to show your talent, but ALSO be coached by a great staff, with a great RB group, and with plenty of cap space for FA's and plenty of draft picks to improve their overall roster. The fact is that any FA QB worth their salt would rather have a great OL to protect him than so called brand name receivers. Remember that at the NFL level, even the so called mediocre receivers (like the ones the Pats currently have), are pretty damned good.

There is ZERO guarantee you get a 3rd for Thuney. ZERO. All it takes is one signing of a UFA and a 3rd comp for Thuney is gone.

Center is the 2nd most important position on the line after the blind-side tackle. Paying an All-Pro player like Thuney 12-14M is a no brainer. It's a huge step up from Andrews.

Wynn, Onwenu, Thuney, Mason, Brown is a MASSIVE, O-line with good mobility. You're going to open up LOTS of running room for your RBs without having to over-rely on TEs and WRs to do blocking.

Losing Cannon and Andrews while adding Brown and retaining Thuney is a massive upgrade to the line if Thuney is retained.
This is expensive

He run blocked well here, it was the other teams that had a problem with his run blocking. We'll see how it goes.

Trent Brown was elite here yes at left tackle. And he hasn't been a good RT elsewhere. We shouldn't force it because of some bias that he is a RT. He was an elite LT for the Patriots and won a ring playing left tackle. Maybe don't mess with that and have him play LT. Wynn is too small for tackle, he gets beat up and hurt constantly.

.

SMH.. Onwenu only went to RT because Eleumenor got injured. Or don't you remember?

You continue to make the assumption that ONWENU is going to stay at RT. Guess what. BROWN is a better RT than LT. And he's better than ONWENU.. Wynn is a better LT than Brown.

So, your idea of moving him inside to LG, a position where he's never played in the NFL, makes no sense at all. Acting as if Wynn will throw some kind of tantrum if he's not playing LT is nonsensical.
Those who are touting that Brown go back to LT should remember this. Defenses usually put their best rushers on the left side ( blind side for right handed QB's). Perhaps Wynn's best attributes as an athlete is how quick his feet are for a guy his size. Plus as the league evolves those rushers are getting lighter and lighter, so lessening the requirement of having a 350lb behemoth playing the position. Playing against faster and faster defenses require OL's to become more nimble to compete.

All these reasons make it more likely that Wynn will line up at LT next season. Though it WOULD have been interesting to see how a Brown/Wynn left side would have looked.

Thuney was never going to be a tackle in the NFL

it actually depends on which side is the blind side (QB throws left or right)

Size is not Wynn's problem with LT and you are at least just as likely to get hurt playing OG.....I just look at the unit and think the most effectove approach will be from left to right Brown,Wynn,Andrews,Mason,Onwenu .... subject to change if Andrews doesn't return...I would just dump Cannon and give most of that money to Andrews

it's going to come down to what Thuney wants......the pats will pay, but won't overpay......$14 millon a year is a lot of $$ for an interior offensive lineman, even a very good one......

I'd love to see him back........but I would not love if they got stuck in a bidding war just to retain his services

the two sides weren't close last year, reportedly.......i can't see the patriots making him the highest paid guard in the game, but i could see someone else willing to do that

with the shape the rest of the o-line appears to be in, i'd LOVE to see him here in 2021.....just not as the highest paid guard in the game

who knows.....maybe he likes it here, maybe his family likes it here, maybe he isn't looking for the MOST he can make, maybe taking a fair contract and maintaining stability is more his style........but guards don't get the chance for a big payday all that often in this league

Has the game changed that much from 2018 so a 27 year old Brown is now obsolete?

After reading some of the posts here I'm kind of warming to the idea of letting Andrews go and signing Thuney to that long term contract and let him play C. So if you have have an OL of Wynn, Onwenu, Thuney, Mason, and Brown, it would be past awesome in my opinion. Only the money issue would keep this from happening.

Another case for keeping Thuney over Andrews is his position flexibility. The guy has played every position on the OL well. So if Brown is just a one year rental (though I think went it's all done, he signs a 2 or 3 year deal, but that just speculating) Having Thuney as a flexible piece would add to his current value at C>

So it all comes down to money. How much more would it cost to keep Thuney over Andrews. Any one have a guess, Is it $2MM/? 4MM/yr,? 6MM/yr? For me if the number is $4mm or less, then I'd seriously consider signing Thurney (of course that would necessitate Thuney wanting to play C)

Oh gotcha
He reportedly didn't like it in Vegas, and his first time in New England was an obvious success. Now, whether he wants to stay in New England longer term, or he just thinks he can rehab his image, is something I don't know.

Brandon Scherff got tagged, which means Thuney is by far the best available G in FA. He is going to break the bank. Looking at the last few years, BB usually rarely signs high priced players that would cost him a comp pick.

No, but back in 2018 we didn't have the luxury of having the foot talent at LT we have with a healthy Wynn. If you recall, that back then, against certain rushers, Brown would need a little help to slow down speed rushers. Now there are even more of those speed rushers in the league, and there will be even more after this draft.

But RW, the question was fair and as just fans we are all just enjoying the speculation of arm chair QB's. Unless or until, Bill decides to give me or you a call for OUR opinion of where to play his new toy, then this is all kind of moot.

He was actually a good RT for the 49ers. They only traded him because he was getting overweight and didn't want to pay him. He played on the left side with the Pats because that would've meant moving Cannon from RT.

Thuney is celebrating today and won't even bother negotiating with Bill.
