Jack Easterby Blames Kraft Family for Texans Turmoil [Update: Texans Have Fired Him]

Not being cute : do you believe a guy like Easterby was refraining from pushing religion ? I have my doubts, but maybe I’m mistaken.

I have no idea, but from what little we know about him (because it is all media), he doesn't seem to have good boundaries.

The impression I get is that the overwhelming majority of pro athletes are Christian Like most Americans.

Depends on how you define "Christian" - in terms of family history, yes. In terms of self-description, the demographics on that changed to less than 50% about 10 years ago. In terms of actually living up to the rules and ethics of the religion, very very few.

If I called her a scumbag you might have a point. She sleeps with men for money. She is, in fact, a gold digging ho, prostitute, whatever label you want to use. At no point did I claim she was immoral. But it's pretty clear you are one of those people that just likes to pick fights out of nothing and argue with people. I'm not interested.

We're all gold digging ho's one way or another.

If anybody were to follow the moral pronouncements and edicts of the bible to the letter they would quickly find themselves on death row. . Wether it is obviously and horrifically immoral edicts or permissions or nonsensical rules pertaining to planting more than one seed in a field, eating shellfish or haircuts and clothing, for example. Every Christian, by necessity cherry picks from the bible. There is actually a logical fallacy named after this: the No True Scotsman fallacy.

I’ve already pointed out my astonishment at how important religion is in the US. And, I suspect, particularly in areas where many of the top football players come from (Southern states). It’s mind blowing that there would be employees on a big business whose primary role is religion-based.
Religion is quite the opposite here in Canada eh?
When we hired him as our "characters coach", what character is he coaching exactly? Guy seems like a snake and a moron.
If I remember correctly from the expose article, he worked with the rookies a fair amount.

Yeah, I wasn't referring to the literalism so much as to the fact that there's no correlation between self-identification and ethical behavior. For example, self described devout Christians commit adultery, embezzlement, child abuse and neglect, and murder just as frequently as non devout people.

And all of this is true across all of the major religions. They play a role in economics and politics, by shaping massive money flows and political frameworks, but not much in social behavior.

So what dictates what is right or wrong in a society.

Empathy, sympathy, compassion. Traits that sometimes seem to be in very short supply, unfortunately. But most of the time, I think we can trust that it's not JUST the law holding most people back from committing crime. At least I think most of humanity isn't lacking compassion. You want to believe otherwise.... *shrug*

The majority of the planet believes in a god in some shape or another.

Atheists, globally, are a fringe minority. Religion is not going away, like ever,
Everyone has their religion and their god. For some, it’s Christianity or Islam or Judaism, etc. For others, it’s science.

it's, like, capitalism, and that's, like wrong.... haven't you read Marx and Engels lately? get w the program... and private property it's evil and stuff.... the government should own everything
This definitely sounds like something a guy who understands what socialism is would say.

I vehemently disagree. I have never sold sexual favors to women in exchange for money, riches or other sorts of gifts.

(although, to be fair, I probably would if I could....)

Just a minor add. I don't disagree. But it's not like atheists have a monopoly on science. Shrodinger (of Schrodinger's cat) postulated all the weird things in quantum physics that point to a higher power or consciousnessness. Other big time scientists as well . So hardcore science doesn't lead to only atheism. Just saying.

.

I didn’t make that argument. I agree that the two are not mutually exclusive. Just pointing out that those who don’t believe in any one particular religion tend to treat science as a religion.

Stuff like this makes it look like BOB was just a scapegoat. They gave him the HC and GM duties but how much power did he actually have? Comparing his relative success at Penn State vs in Houston makes me scratch my head.

The one problem with this is that O'Brien was hired in 2014 by the Texans. Easterby didn't join the Texans until 2019. No, this is not advocating for Easterby. Just pointing out that O'Brien had the helm uncontested for 5 years. There had been plenty of harsh talk about O'Brien during that part of his tenure, with many calls to replace him after they went 4-12 in 2017. The bounce back to 11-5 helped, but being bounced in the WC round didn't.

Fair points, though O'Brien was only the actual GM of the team from January 2020 up until his mid-season firing that same year. He was the "interim GM" from June 2019-January 2020 after Brian Gaine was fired.

There has actually been an uptake in religious thinking this millennium. Most attribute it to the fact that the world at large gave secularism/Marxism/Communism a shot in the 20th century and it produced the bloodiest century in human history (Hitler, Stalin, Mao) so the pendulum swung strongly back to religion. I have been reading a few books on this and find it fascinating. But your points are valid. Humans have always believed in God in some form for as long as humans have existed.

Michener, The Source ... goes thru just that ... good book

Got you. Here's the thing. The bible is not a moral compass. It is a collection of "moral' pronouncements. Several of which we now know to be wholly immoral. Bigotry and violence towards gays, for example. You want to watch someone tap dance like you've never seen? Ask a Christian if their god is perfectly moral, why he condones the owning of other people as property and beating them nearly to death, for example. So this idea, and it's a popular one, that someone is morally superior, or more moral because they are a Christian has always struck me as bizarre. If anything, the religion inspires some horrible, obviously immoral behavior. I know it's not your point. But there are thousands of Christian denominations alone. If somebody claims to be a Christians, I am forced to take them at their word as I cannot read their mind. The fact that their idea of Christianity, or acceptable behavior, might be different than someone else's is irrelevant.
