Makes me angry thinking how Tuna was able to steal Curtis Martin. He should have never left.

Bledsoe sure had a knack for throwing some really frustrating INTs like at 5:13 and 11:43. The delay of game at 3:30 was a brain fart too.

First time we saw the Tuck Rule: 6:57. Wasn’t that a pick though?

The Lewis hit: 12:25. Bledsoe still had his helmet on ready to come back in at 13:43 and he did. Unreal. If Marc Edwards doesn’t fumble 14:36 - I wonder what that would mean for Drew’s health? Yikes. He looks really uncomfortable at 15:34. :(

Brady debut: 15:15 Looks so young. Looked great here too! Too bad they didn’t make him go downfield more with time left but he was still throwing some real darts and man he was that close to connecting for the game tying TD 17:20! Now -ahem - Brady didn’t have a week of reps with the 1’s and yet he still marched them down the field with the game on the line and the defense actually trying. THIS is what I‘d expect to see from a great young QB prospect coming in as a backup. I haven’t seen anything resembling this from our current backup.

Troy Brown was a beast!

Yeah they were 0-2 after this game but it’s not like they were not competitive. And no, Belichick was nowhere near getting fired. They should not have lost this game. You could tell by watching this team they were very, very close. All they needed was the change at QB and the rest was history.

I was at that game. The post 9/11 game with Andruzzi's brother & FDNY crew. Your video on replay shows that VT's pass/fumble hits the ground. A fumble. When the refs signaled it was a pass (Tuck Rule) and the Jets kept possession we all screamed "FIX!!!!"

Drew was horrible that game. Threw to LB defenders with nobody around. Week one the previous week we'd played the Bungles who were awful and we LOST! Wife had given up on Drew in previous seasons but these 2 lost games after a 5-11 2000 season clinched it for me. Remember that Drew also threw a pick right at a Pittsburg LB in the playoff game but thankfully he dropped it.

Even though I had spent lots of time at Smithfield camp that summer (out of a job) and felt that Brady completely outplayed Drew in camp, when Drew went out and we lost starting 0-2, I said to my buddies as we left the aluminum bench stands, "Season's over!" Not. Even. Wrong.

Based on what you saw in that training camp, how long do you think it would have been before Brady replaced Bledsoe, absent of the Mo Lewis hit?

Mid-season?
Week one of 2002?
Longer based on the contract Kraft had given Drew?

Bledsoe - where the heck are you throwing to, dude (Farrior INT)? That was worse than anything Cam's done (even the 49ers short pass to Meyers).

This was a "if I could use all emojis except for disagree" kind of post. Forgot about that playoff almost int throw - just remembered I missed the canon arm.

That was to Joey Porter, the guy who hated the Patriots. Dropped a pick 6. I’m glad he didn’t get that or we would never hear the end of it.

You’re right it did hit the ground.

The Pitt LB was Joey Porter. The one guy we do NOT want to see make a play like that against us. He probably thinks the Patriots cheated him out of the pick 6. F him. Whoever was responsible for this - I hope they got a huge raise.

I'm convinced Grier/Carroll were hesitant on extending Martin due to his durability issues starting at the end of the '96 and '97 seasons. He was the difference in that '97 divisional game against Pittsburgh. Martin is my favorite Pats RB, but he went to a great situation in NY as they had some massive/talented O-lines. Pats O-line was deteriorating each year. It's such a shame what happened to Robert Edwards as he showed some promise in his first season.
Threw to LB defenders with nobody around.
That was a bad habit Drew had over the years - throwing to the LB in the middle of the field.

Drew just wasn't a fit in the offense and you could tell from week 1 of the 2000 season. Drew was high maintenance, meaning he needed a lot of parts around him to be effective. He also liked operating out of the shotgun, but Woody couldn't snap the ball effectively (that was bizarre).

This lines up with rumors not long after Brady took over as it's still talked about today that Brady was outplaying Bledsoe in camp.

So we need a “Mo Lewis” hit this Sunday? Stidham = Next Brady ;)

I was at the game. before kids and marriage too, so I'm sure I was pretty blasted by the time Brady came in...

So the Patriots are in the market for a QB. Its unlikely we find a Tom Brady in the draft. Will we be happy with a Bledsoe clone in the draft or the FA market?

Hard to say. I really was impressed with Brady in his 2nd year camp. Don't follow college ball so all I knew about him was he was the QB from Michigan. BB's 1st year here he went 5-11. BB was NOT liked by the major sportswriters who back then were THE powerful social influencers. I'd like to think that after an 0-2 start losing to awful Bungles and the hated Jets, BB would have replaced Bledsoe later in 2001 once the Pats had been eliminated from playoff contention. Eliminated because Drew could not throw a screen pass and loved hitting LBs in the chest with errant throws. But Maybe (I don't know) Kraft's then touted love for Bledsoe "like a son to me" and BB's 2nd losing year in a row may have caused Kraft to intervene and keep the $100M contract QB.
Answer: I don't know.

Thanks for the response.

I recall a couple friends of mine saying that they were also at several of those Bryant College sessions, and stating that Brady looked much better than Brady. Just trying to figure out if their comments were more based on the benefit of hindsight, or reality.

Personally I will admit that I expected the Patriots would win no more than three games that season. My logic was based on what I perceived to be a lack of top end talent, and at that point their two best offensive players (Bledsoe and Terry Glenn) were gone for at minimum several weeks - plus Willie McGinest was once again missing a game with an injury.

So hey, pass one of those moron stickers over here, please.

I remember hearing that Weis loved Brady in camp. Based on the first 2 games in 2001, it looked like Brady would have gotten his shot regardless. Now the question is when? 5-6 games in? midway through the year? Who knows, probably would have been made too late and 2001 doesn't even happen
