N'Keal Harry (lack of) Progress Report

Despite his lack of production, Harry got 50+ snaps yesterday second to Byrd again but way more than any other WR. So the coaches are seeing something many here do not. Will be interesting to see if that changes next week.

They literally have nobody else to play! Jacobi Meyers has dissappeared, Byrd is out there with him, that leaves Gunner and Slater. So I wouldn't look at playing time as any indicator other than that has actually has a pulse!

Leave it to the Patriots to draft the only dud in a stud WR draft class. Its Tony Eason all over again!

I have seen enough. I don't feel that Harry has it in him to be a good, only fair, not a great receiver. For me, it is time to release him one way or another. The experiment is over. OVER Bye Harry

Clearly you throw your kid out just because he's not Einstein. Or even Elon Musk. Great thinking there.. Can we get rid of you instead since I've seen enough of your lax posting?

Serious question - do you really think he’s lived up to expectations? He’s a second year wideout that has had two full seasons in the offense and was drafted in the first round before other WRs who not only made an immediate impact in their rookie seasons, but have continued to progress. I’d love to be wrong about him, but he can’t separate against man at this point. That’s a major red flag. Hell, he had trouble separating downfield from PAC-12 DBs.

I am convinced you are part of the Patriots WRs coaching, scouts, or something to do with drafting WRs. I think the only player you have come close in criticizing is Jules that I have seen.
What went wrong with Sanu? Or Dobson? Or Tate?

My problem with Harry is simple: everything is hard. Even when he makes the catch a db is always draped all over him. There are things I know he is good at such as blocking but that could be found in lower rounds. I want to like the dude but I seriously question if our 1st round wr could beat a linebacker on crossing routes or even a go route. Shame.

Harry has made short strides between this year and last... I like him, and i hope he does well for the Pats... however, at this point, will anyone be surprised if the fifth year option is not exercised? Honestly I'd be more surprised if it was exercised...

There is some raw talent there, but there should have been greater improvements than we've seen so far to date... Hopefully that will change... but if it is going to change, its on N'Keal Harry to make those changes, no one else... he has to practice harder, work harder, work longer, work smarter than he currently has been...
You can't work on your twitch muscles if you were not born with it, ligaments. It is like asking Sony to train harder so he can be faster. Hammies will not let him run any faster. I can train 30 hours a day and will never run as fast was Usain Bolt.
Watch Michael Thomas cuts, he is not fast but can cut like AB. Harry moves like an slow TE who is trying to break away from twitchy and fast DBs. Just a disaster of a pick considering the talents that went after him at WRs. I will give me car to a stranger if I am wrong and will be happy for it. @DaBruinz says he saw Harry open a couple of times in the game, I will pay for the 22s and just watch Harry.

Zolak spoke this morning about Harry and it’s not good. We have Edelman playing on one leg and Harry on 55 snaps had the ball thrown his way only 2x (no catches). He said there was a video breakdown of Cam looking Harry’s way but he’s so slow getting off the line that Cam has to move away to the next target. And it’s not like the other teams are rolling coverage to him. He gets man to man soft coverage and he’s not getting open.

About the 26 minute mark

This is obvious, but for some reason, he still has one or two supporters who are not family members. Harry does not look like he can cut it at this level.. but I caveat that I need to watch film. The entire offense skill position is dreadful.

Their game plan focused on taking away Jules through the air and Harris on the ground. Jules was frequently in bracket coverage which means that SOMEONE should have been able to win their one-on-one match-ups. That someone should have been Harry. Hell, even Byrd and Izzo, as trash as he is, were able to beat single coverage and haul in a couple of passes. At this point, I honestly wouldn’t mind experimenting with him as a move TE. Bring him in tight or on the LoS, try to get him matched up with a LB or a S, and get him working between the hashes or down the seam. Pass pro would definitely suffer, but that’s one of the benefits of having a mobile QB. I’m not sure what McDaniels and Bill are smoking when they keep trying to line him up as a flanker or split-end, but they need to put it down. He’s just not that guy.

I'd do this in a heartbeat and let Zuber/Gunner take his WR reps.

Zuber has looked like Usain Bolt in comparison to Harry whenever he’s caught the ball.
At this point I would just like to see someone out there not plodding along. Byrd has that Dorsett speed that is great when you're in shorts running 40 yards on a track but nonexistent everywhere else.

You can train 30 hours a day and be faster than you currently are... you can get stronger, you can get faster... it takes work... and more importantly, you can get smarter ... Harry can improve his route running... he can improve his separation

the question is will he put in his work to do so

That is my biggest issue with Harry. He either won't put in the work or can't figure out how to be a better route runner. There are tons of receivers who have the same or slower timed speed than Harry that are still able to be productive in the NFL because they are able to run routes crisply and effectively. Antonio Brown, Keenan Allen, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquon Boldin, and on an on. These guys aren't blazing by people to get open they are creating separation with precise route running.

Speed is God given. Sure, he can work on it and maybe improve it a bit, but he isn’t all of a sudden gonna be fast. In terms of his route running, to have NFL starting WR footwork caliber ability to run crisp routes and have the twitch to shake a CB isn’t something anyone can just learn by working on it. There’s thousands of WRs in college and not many have that ability. Harry wasn’t a good route runner in college, he got to the NFL on his size and what he did in college once he had the ball in his hand.

Too early to tell. Wait till the season’s over and see if he made any progress. Hopefully he can put to together and show some consistency. Hard to have confidence in him right now but all it takes is a breakout performance to help his confidence.

I'm convinced you haven't the foggiest clue what you're talking about anymore. I've criticized plenty of players when it's deserved. The difference between you and me is that I look at reality and see the entire picture where you look at everything through s**T covered lenses.

You are always just so pleasant.

Zolak isn't close to being the be all end all when it comes to Film breakdowns. And he's been wrong as much as he's been right about players.

The 2 "targets" to Harry were poorly thrown balls that had no chance of getting to him. One was thrown behind him and into the ground. The other wasn't close either. There were several other plays where Cam flat out missed him when he was open.

Still not giving up on the kid, but frankly we have to look at who's developing these receivers. It's not like Harry was an unknown the Pats just plucked out of nowhere in the first round. He was in the top 3 in most WR rankings heading into the draft. He should be more productive and we've seen glimpses of the physical tools he posses that suggest he could be a productive receiver.
