35 million in cap space, are there NO quality WRs or TEs available?

And how do we know he “is very available right now”? He is also a $15m WR playing like a $2m WR right now.

I wouldn’t be against getting OBJ because our WR core is so weak but I don’t think he’s as good as he used to be.
Fair. However, I disagree with the notion that he’s no longer “as good as he used to be.” IMHO, he doesn’t have the symbiotic relationship with Mayfield that he had with Eli. Mind you, he’s literally coming off 2 straight 1,000 yard/14ypc seasons. He’s still got “it” but the QB doesn’t...

lol, first game of the season, Harry has 5 for 5 catches (the 6th attempt was deflected on the LoS) unfortunatelly fumbled in the endzone (very stupid rule I have to admit) but has caught everything what was in his range, Edelman has 5 of 6 (one bad drop), Cam has had like 16 of 19 or similar and there was only one drop, others were deflected or thrown away/to high...

the Patriots gameplan yesterday was to pound and depend heavily on running game, option run, not because the WR/TE are bad, but because its the freaking first game the QB has played with the offense since there were ZERO pre-season games, so of course they didn't unfolded the complete playbook, they are not there yet, consider it to be a pre-season month for this offense

when they called passing plays it was quite well considering the circumstances, of course it does not look like Mahomes in KC who knows the play book in and out and plays with like 95% the same guys on offense since 3 years where everyone is on the same page

a bit of a patience would be nice for some "fans" on this board with the offense this year

While I agree its only week 1 and the game plan didn't call for alot of passing plays...

There is justified doubt about Harry and it's not all from just his first week 1 performance.

He never got much separation in college. He along with most of the receiving corp wasn't getting much separation in training camp.

Gotta kind tighten your face a bit if it has to come down to "hoping and depending" on harry to develop into the pats number 1 option at wide out.

I’m afraid Cam won’t be able to physically hold up if we continue to run him so much. And we’re not going to contend without being able to air it out some games. Cam never even attempted a pass to Byrd yesterday. I’d like to see them add a receiver who can get open and stretch the field. OBJ could be an interesting trade target.

The best analogy we have here is Matt Cassel in 2008.

I'm going to exclude Game 1, since he took over midgame, and Game 16, because gale force winds. Games 2 through 8 he averaged about 30 passes per game (with just 23 in Week 2). Games 9 through 15, he averaged 40 passes per game.

I expect we will be seeing more than 20 passes a game by season's end.

I'll say it again for the slow.

This game is not about the game plan. The game plan is going to be a process to install. This game is about letting our veterans do what they do best and playing a simple offense that matches the strengths and weaknesses of the roster. It was about letting everyone get comfortable so we can learn what we have to build on.

We'll have time to get cute later in the year, for now, we simply play to our strengths and let the revamped team build an identity.

I cannot believe that I am typing this but Harry might turn out to be good.

For all the good Harry did yesterday, he erased it with the fumble. Dude owes the team big time vs upcoming Seattle where the Pats need to throw the ball a lot more if my suspicions are true.

Yall said Gunner is good. Well, he should be back by game 4. The Pats could put speedy JJ Taylor out as a WR too. They have used RBs as WRs before.

I don't think the play book was very closed. We saw James White trying to make a pass. We saw a lot of crossing motions. We saw a lot of option plays. We saw more stuff being called than we'd see if Hoyer was on the field and he knows the play book cold. I don't think we're seeing things being held back because Cam is in there. I'm wondering if you can give examples of things that are being held back so we can look for them in future games.

I think we saw most of what the offense will be. The trend to use the strong OL to run will continue. We're going to have a ball control offense that uses Cam's strengths to keep the defense honest. We're not going to see a lot of 20+ yard passes, that's not Cam's strength. We're going to need to stay on schedule and avoid penalties. There won't be a lot of good options on third and long. At one point yesterday we saw what was a play for field position on third and long, just run it up the middle and get a few relatively yards since the D was playing back, then punt. It'd be nice if we had a good FG kicker, but that's a different topic.

IMO Cam is never going to look like Mahomes. Cam has never had that kind of arm strength and accuracy, and now he's aging and just had shoulder surgery. Mahomes runs, but he's not built like Cam. I think Josh is doing a great job building a game plan to Cam's strengths, but I don't see a lot of untapped potential. We're going to see a lot of games like we just saw yesterday, IMO.

No. We kinda just need to hope Harry develops, Edelman stays healthy, and a TE picks up the pace

Or honestly bite the bullet and sign Brown for the second half of the season if we are in the hunt

Brown is suspended for the first half of the season i think.

Edit: I checked, he is, with more possibly coming out of further investigation of misconduct

Cam put up 68% completion of passes in 10 games with Norv Turner just 18 months ago. So I think he can continue to be the greatest rushing QB scorer of all time (which he already is) while being a 65% completion rate, extremely efficient passer with over 7ypc. Especially once Asiasi becomes activated in the TE passing playbook on game day.

.

Cam only passed 19 times yesterday, he completed 15 of them. His 79% completion percentage is fourth best in the NFL, his yards per attempt is a respectable 8th best, he had a 101 QBR. When he focused on Edelman early, Edelman came through, when he focused on N'Keal, he had a career high in receptions, White was involved and looked good... even Izzo looked good in spots. They didn't have Gunner, Keene, Asiasi barely played and let's face it, they didn't pass much at all.

The opinion that these weapons are terrible is overblown and based on the fact that a 42 year old cranky and disgruntled QB who was too injured to practice with them last year hated these rookies. BB didn't make moves to vastly improve the WR corps because he didn't feel they were the problem, judging from the small sample size we've seen this year they weren't. TE was a problem and it was addressed in the draft.

How did Tampa look yesterday with their vast array of super weapons? Tell me again how "weapons" and "separation" is what creates a potent passing offense.

Yup, and thats the get for them. Odell is in love with BB and him and Cam are Bros so its a no brainer. I do that deal right now, not for whatever it takes but he would solve a ton for Cam and whomever is next.

Thought Harry did some nice things on the field yesterday. Beaides the fumble which was obviously detrimentaly bad. He blocked well on running downs, he caught everything thrown his way. He’s not great but he’s not as terrible as some have mentioned. He’s still learning and he’s going to have some more games to prove he belongs. Don’t think he’ll be that #1 we were all hoping for but he does have potential to be a 2 ot 3, which considering the state of the wr corps is a good thing.

Agreed; plus BB already attempted to trade for OBJ in the 2018 offseason, so we have concrete evidence of mutual interest. Also, his current/future cap hits are extremely manageable.

A few things seem clear.
1. This is the preseason for NE.
2. They have a few important offensive pieces not ready yet or ailing, so it's going to be simple this first month.
3. Their passing offense will take more time to get going. So of course the run game (utilizing Cam) has to carry them.
4. They know they won't win in SEA, and don't want to show much tape before KC and the tough middle stretch.
5. I don't think Stid will stay on the PS for long.

Completely agree. I'll even go so far as to say this week @SEA will be a time to work on install. They're not going to break out their full offensive plan in wk 2 when they know they can't win

Oh they can win Sunday. People who don't think they can are falling into the trap. They are much better than people gave them any chance of being and it was week 1. I do agree they won't go all out, but them winning Sunday isn't impossible. Far from it.

Btw, I’d give a first for Dallas Goedert. He’s a beast and then some. The complete package and if Ertz was out of the picture he’d probably wouldnof went for 150+ yesterday.

Don’t know why but I get this feeling there might be some behind the scenes talk about making a move for OBJ. Yeah he’s talented but can’t help but shake the Chad ocho Johnson about him. Probably misguided but really talented receivers that play with less than talented QBs should still perform. See Deandre Hopkins. Played with a lot of bad qbs in Houston until Watson came along. But he always made it work. Goes to a new system with an up and coming qb in Arizona and puts up a monster performance.

Is Baker Mayfield and the the Browns that bad that they can’t find a way to get him involved? They very well could be, but I’ll admit I have some lingering doubts about the whole OBJ move. I’d love to be wrong if it happens. I’d be ecstatic if he did come here and light it up too.
