Cam is being set up to fail without credible WR and TE threats. It will be easy for defenses to stack the box and give minimal attention to passing games. No double teams on WRS.
I understand that until outputs, BB thought he had no cap to work with. But now there is 35 million available, especially for one year contracts.

I hope he is not planning to go the entire year with ONLY the current WR and TE group/

Pretty sure OBJ is very available right now. Whether we'd want him at the price the Browns would want, who knows. Guessing he'd be cheap.
And how do we know he “is very available right now”? He is also a $15m WR playing like a $2m WR right now.

I wouldn’t be against getting OBJ because our WR core is so weak but I don’t think he’s as good as he used to be.

The Chiefs have good weapons at WR/TE and they are both defending champs and 2020 favorites.

What teams, since 2010 (or even 2000) have had superior play at both positions ? I’m genuinely interested in finding out if « having big time players at both WR/TE » leads to championship seasons.

In NE’s case, the best weapons were in years they were unable to win the SB.

The Patriots did not have cap space available to go after players early in free agency, and that is when premier free agents are signed. That cap space only became available when players like Hightower opted out, and at that point the free agency cupboard was bare. Signing a familiar name is no guarantee he will immediately make an impact either, between time taken to learn a new offense and terminology, and whether or not he is in football shape after no training camp.

Is it fair to say that we may have the worst WR/TE group in the league? Obviously we make up for it with a great Oline, great secondary and great coaching, but eventually we will need the skill position guys to step up.

Here's the first list I found. The top available WR is Taylor Gabriel, who has unofficially opted out of this season. The second WR is Sanu. So uh, yeah.

Look around the league. This is still a passing league. There’s so much your defense can do. They might keep themselves in games but your passing game has to be good. Miami is terrible. We gotta have one of the worse units in the nfl. Did Meyers suit up yesterday?

People said that about Randy Moss in 06. He might mope his way out of town to where the Browns just want him gone and we get him for a third and he is rejuvenated playing with Cam who I believe he already has a relationship with.

And OBJ is very fond of BB. If you remember that segment with him and Cam talking about Cam being able to mesh with BB. OBJ was very high on BB and believed Cam was in the right situation.

No. We kinda just need to hope Harry develops, Edelman stays healthy, and a TE picks up the pace

Or honestly bite the bullet and sign Brown for the second half of the season if we are in the hunt

This, and the Patriots are relying on second year players and rookies to fill the void, and it's not surprising or an indictment against them that Bill is integrating them in slowly, while playing to his QB's strengths.

There is reason for some optimism:

1) Gunner will help when he's back in week four.
2) Harris, although a RB, will help the passing attack when he's back in week four.
3) Asiasi took his first snaps at a hard to learn position and should contribute more soon.
4) Keene was injured but could be able to continue down the road.
5) Izzo for what it's worth looked improved.
6) Young receivers will continue to improve and get in better sync with Cam.

This offense only needs 3 receivers per game to be effective if the line and RB's stay healthy, and if either Asiasi or Keene becomes a viable threat. It won't be conventional, but the Pat's passing attack could be decent/more well rounded by December, but if the newbies don't develop it could also suck.

I'd rather see what we have this year and save the cap for next year, unless someone is available via a trade on a reasonable multi year contract.

Harry is not the answer. It's amazing that these excellent college receivers suddenly forget how to play when they come to Foxboro. I would like to see them sign or trade for some help at this key position.

Harry is way too slow. How many starting WRs do you know can't even average 10 yards per catch ? Total rookies like DeeDee Lamb just put up 60 yards yesterday for the Cowboys being a total rookie with virtual training camp during covid.

I'm very hopeful for Asiasi to become a receiving weapon. He's an athletic freak for a tight end.

Last time we thought we needed a WR after the season started we traded a 2nd for Sanu -- are you up for something like that?

No one is letting go of a skilled WR or TE until it's clear their team sucks and the GM wants draft capital to show the fans that maybe they'll be better next year.

Even then there will be more buyers than sellers, so be prepared to pay high to get someones 3rd string talent who has injury or contract concerns.

Cap space doesn't mean squat, you can't trade it.

lol, first game of the season, Harry has 5 for 5 catches (the 6th attempt was deflected on the LoS) unfortunatelly fumbled in the endzone (very stupid rule I have to admit) but has caught everything what was in his range, Edelman has 5 of 6 (one bad drop), Cam has had like 16 of 19 or similar and there was only one drop, others were deflected or thrown away/to high...

the Patriots gameplan yesterday was to pound and depend heavily on running game, option run, not because the WR/TE are bad, but because its the freaking first game the QB has played with the offense since there were ZERO pre-season games, so of course they didn't unfolded the complete playbook, they are not there yet, consider it to be a pre-season month for this offense

when they called passing plays it was quite well considering the circumstances, of course it does not look like Mahomes in KC who knows the play book in and out and plays with like 95% the same guys on offense since 3 years where everyone is on the same page

a bit of a patience would be nice for some "fans" on this board with the offense this year
