It's a dream job for most but a brutal biz. I don't follow any of these media types for news. There are so many nowadays nothing is secret for long.

Haggs, ASB & Abby seemed like decent people and honestly the best of this bunch but are we really missing any of these guys?

Idk I feel like you really have to separate yourself from others today if you really wanna make $ or a bame for yourself?

Like I know more than a few people that hustle in the draft community but barely making 2k a month and that's very few & far between let me tell you. It's all clicks & I'm dead serious when i say you might make $50-100 bucks a month, might. Then you have to do your YT channel. You'll have a patreon. Hoping to make $ off that but often times you need help so now the $ is split.

Again I look around and see a lot people doing the same thing more or less.

I know Mike R is the gold standard. A few others are top notch too. Just a hard business to make a name for yourself, enough $ and not sell out to the creatures.

Who do you guys like? Why? New & old.

What do you want in a journalist -reporter?

Where do you see the business going in 10-20 years? I'd be scared **** writing for a paper or old timer online?
Maybe bet on yourself & a few others and start your own thing? Athletic has a decent staff. It can't be that hard to do if you have the talent committed to the cause? Can it?

The Athletic's model is a pretty good one....thoroughly investigated articles, no ads, and you pay for it. Howe really puts in the work.

Even I feel that Reiss doesn't have much say over at ESPN...hope he still has staying power. I know I will follow him wherever he goes.

Bedard is pretty good at BSP...more opinionated than he would be elsewhere, IMO.

And I still read Curran as well, like his stuff even the Butler benching stuff.

I also like Lazar's effort....that is a lot of break down.

Tough business to be in.....

Haggerty is finishing out the hockey season. That position can be re-visited as everything moves forward, if warranted/needed.
Blakely is finishing out the basketball season. That position can be re-visited as everything moves forward, if warranted/needed.
Tanguay, who has my sympathy for the illness that befell him, has nonethless become a complete buffoon on air, and he should have been gone long ago.

I don't see any issue there, given the tumult caused by the virus, and the uncertainty of the near-future for sports. Keeping Trenni over Trotta, and Tomase over Chin, on the other hand, seems foolish as all get out.

The Athletic is great. They really swooped up 10-12 great writers last year within like 6 months. College & pro it's great.

Agree with a lot of this. Esp who they kept/laid off. I thought I read ASB will be teaching at BU after he finishes this out. Might be wrong, things could definitely change.

Again though most of these people I never heard of & are just there to act a fool (Tang, Tomase, Trenni)

I don't wish unemployment on anyone but lots of dead weight. Can't blame them with the uncertainty ahead.

You really have to separate yourself somehow.

It comes down to: How many people do we need talking about the same event?

Look at Twitter any time something pretty minor happens, a deluge of tweets about the same thing pops up.

What kind of viewership does "NBC Boston" get? I have no idea, I'm a cord cutter.

I follow Curran on Twitter so occasionally get vectored off to their web site, other than that, they're invisible to me.

look at what happened to Sports Illustrated to see the future of written sports...

newspapers will die off eventually and the websites that we do get, except for a very few run by companies like nbc, espn etc that have direct ties to the product, will become content mills staffed by, well, just guys and gals who like sports... deadspin is a shell of itself,,, barstool is geared for 15 year olds... so it looks like Bleacher Report for all!

and while the athletic is doing well now (I hope), as there is more consolidation of paying jobs, more and more sites like the athletic will start up, overcrowd the field which will hurt the quality subscription based sites... its an ugly future

but there is one saving grace... if this in anyway hurts that ****roach John Tomase, then i'm all for it

Barstool is awful :crying:

Congrats to those guys that hit it big but yea I don't bother with them. Like you said it's for little entitled white frat losers. Or maybe I said that and you said something different

Bleached report is ok sometimes. They have some talent.

But yea the A already fights for subscribers. Which I'm one but no one is safe in that biz.

Curran and Perry are solid on the podcasting front, too. Curran's Patriots Talk Podcast & Perry's Next Pats Podcast are recommended listening. Perry is, more often than not, on Curran's show. On his own show, Perry dives deep on player acquisition stuff in the offseason. He's had relatively deep profiles / interviews related to the 2020 draft class, for example.

The Athletic hired away both of the Panthers full-time beat writers (Joe Person & Jourdan Rodrigue) who worked for the Charlotte Observer. Neither writer was a home-run but both were serviceable. Press in Charlotte are notoriously coddling of owners, coaches and players...never ask the tough questions.

All that said, in June the Athletic laid off 46 staffers (8%) and pushed through pay cuts on most if not all others.

I hear they produce some good long-form journalism but have serious doubts that their pay-wall model will work in the long-run.

Deadspin! I was about to try and correct you and say "duh Deadspin's dead...", but luckily I visited the site - appears they've hired an entire new team of writers! I guess that's good from a "jobs for sports writers" perspective. But, the self-immolation of that site about a year ago was truly something to behold.

The core (former) Deadspin writers have come back together for a new project called Defector. Looks like they're going with the subscription model. I may check them out - used to really enjoy Deadspin.

All I want is ONE honest investigative reporter to rip apart the facade that is Roger Stokoe Goodell's career as the Hitler of the NFL. Just one HONEST person, man or woman, with the guts to lay bare the complete fecal matter that is the heirarchy of the NFL Offices.

Yea I know they're fighting for & need subscribers big time. I heard about their layoffs but didn't know it was that large a # and didn't hear any names.

It's a brutal biz. Esp when you talk about making actual money. Not just surviving.

Never had access to their content so don't know any of the any of the reporters (other than previously mentioned) but this article includes tweets from many of the departed, most seem to have a fairly positive attitude all things considered, FYI: The Athletic Lays Off 46 Employees, Implements Pay Cuts

That won't happen while he's in office. Small chance after.

What's more possible is getting our guys in the HOF so we have some say in history, during this era.

Harrison, C Jones (even if it's a Ari uni big win for Bill as a draft pick) Vince, Sey, maybe DMC? Longshot probably missing someone but we need Pats in there for many reasons.

Obviously Gronk, Brady & Sony are locks.

It's ironic many of these laid off hacks did their part to hype the coronavirus on the air... The wuhan and it's hysteria cancelled sports, ad revs plummeted and now these media jezebels are unemployed... Careful what you wish for folks...

Yea that's rough. Hopefully they landed on their feet. Just like regular life I guess. You have to do something that's in demand and do it well.

Well, on a grand scale, people aren't going to pay money to read content about (essentially) non-existent sports.

It's so weird to keep using that word. The Bird Flu which infected a ton globally came from Kansas farms. I don't remember people over hyping the Kansas flu name.
