Should this season’s champion have an asterisk?

If anything, I think winning a SB is twice as hard this year than any other year.....so negative asterisks then.

Came to post same view : management (especially) and players should have a golden star attached to their win.

I think it really comes down to the timing of the infections. Regular season - deal with it. If one of the conference champions were to have their starting QB or several key players become infected and ineligible to play between the conference championship game and the Super Bowl I do not see how anyone could take the final outcome w/o thinking less of the achievement. As a Pats fan I would certainly "take" the win but it would have lesser meaning to me than prior championships if the other team was missing key players due to virus.

They may start the season. I doubt they'll finish it. A few more opt-outs on the Pats - Cannon, HT, and now Bolden - and I expect BB to use it to identify his younger core of players for next year.

This year won't be it, I fear.

That is another thing that I haven't seen mentioned a lot, the risk to the coaches. A lot of these older coaches aren't exactly the picture of health and are in their 60's. How crazy would it be if Bill or Andy Reid were to get it leading up to the AFCCG of the Super Bowl? It isn't like these guys are 24 years old and in great shape and can manage the symptoms. They could end up hospitalized for far longer than the 2 week quarantine period.

If you have a Nick Foles scenario play out where a star QB gets Covid and then his back up takes the team to the Super Bowl I think most people would be ready to call the season a wash and move on to next year. If by say November we're essentially watching the XFL with replacement players and UDFAs on the field then not only will there be an asterisk by this year, the NFL should really just call the season off at that point to prevent anymore infections or harm.

If teams can stay relativity health and we have a truly competitive season and somebody wins with no funny business it may seem more legitimate? The problem is the likelihood of that happening is pretty low without an NBA like bubble approach which may or may not work itself. I'd imagine that the owners really don't care and there is simply too much money to lose by not playing, but it is more likely that the season will end in failure and high human misery than not at this point.

I don't think the league would make any such designation. There's no such thing and they wouldn't make such an admission.

But the fans will for better or worse. They love doing it to the Patriots.

If the near-worst happens and entire position groups are routinely quarantined, it could be an interesting and perplexing coaching contest. What happens when a team with no WRs or running backs faces a team with no cornerbacks or offensive lineman? Bill Belichick will the most interesting coach in the league (he is already).

It's going to come down to who stays healthiest the longest. It's really no different than any other season in that regard, they just have to add the preparations for COVID to the mix as much as injury prevention.

I agree where it totally depends on how it plays out. I feel the same way about the NBA and NHL as well. There's a chance the eventual champion would not have benefitted too greatly from COVID, but then there's also a chance where we all realize COVID was the only reason a certain team won. So it's the dreaded 'we'll have to wait and see...…….'

If I was betting person I'd bet a scenario plays out that creates the asterisk

I think this whole situation will greatly favor teams with many returning veterans and coaches and stability from a play calling standpoint.

All of this gives the Chiefs a tremendous leg up on repeating (more so than in most seasons), barring large number of key injuries or mass optouts
