"New England’s secondary is the place where passes go to die against man coverage."

Pretty cool to see Jackson getting more love. He's not just a beneficiary of being in this secondary. He's one of the reasons it's elite.

QBs would have a better passer rating against Jackson if they just threw it into the dirt on every attempt.

As a group, this is the best secondary in Pats history.
When a review of the top man coverage CBs in the entire NFL has the top three all from the same team you are looking at a pretty good secondary.

Not sure I’d put Jason ahead of Gilmore, but when either one of them is your CB3 you’re going to be okay.

Not to bash Jackson, who is obviously a very talented guy, but I get the sense two major factors weren’t put into this “rating”.

1. Number of penalties against, which Jackson has been notably bad at picking up. His aggressiveness, especially on deep passes, has cost the team a lot of penalty yards.

2. Gilmore’s special ability to Revis out a star receiver gives Jackson much more favorable matchups.

In all, glad Jackson and McCourty are getting some more recognition, as they are both really good coverage corners. To put them at 1-2 ahead of truly elite CBs, and especially ahead of Gilmore himself, makes this a laughable list. If Jackson and McCourty were both top 15, that would be incredibly impressive in itself...having them 1, 2, and 3 screams of unnecessary absurdity.

There were some stats cited to justify Jackson’s ranking. Looking at them one might argue that ranking him lower than #1 would be screaming absurdity.
Jackson’s man coverage metrics were absolutely preposterous — 19 catches allowed on 46 targets for 181 yards, no touchdowns, a league-best five interceptions, a league-best opposing QBR of 13.3, a league-best EPA of -27.8, and only Pittsburgh’s Steven Nelson had a lower Positive Play Rate in man coverage than Jackson’s 28.3%.

No matter how you slice it, no cornerback was better in man coverage in 2019, ...

The article is flawed because it is based off the 2019 season where NE faced terrible QBs and passing offenses.

This is the same as the heavyweight fighter who is undefeated in 20 fights. Wow, he must be the real deal. Problem is that all his fights were vs stiffs who were not any good.

The 2019 Pats first 8 games were vs the biggest stiffs in the league.

1 PITT 30th passing
2 MIA 25th
3 NYJ 32nd
4 BUFF 23rd
5 WASH 29th
6 NYG 26th
7 NYJ 32nd
8 CLE 21st

The only teams that did not have controversy at QB were BUFF and CLE. PITT would have been a better passing offense with Ben, but the Steelers still had issues at WR because JuJu Smith did not fair so well as the #1 WR in the absence of AB.

JuJu

2018- 1426 yards 7 TDs
2019- 552 yards 3 TDs

I am going wait until this NE defense and secondary shuts down a high octane passing team like KC before popping the champagne cork.

They held the Chiefs to 23 points last season. 7 of those came from a terrible Brady interception that placed KC near the red zone.

If the offense wasn't so terrible last year and could score, defending would have been much easier.

Its a wash.

Kelce fumbled in FG range and lost the ball.

Gilmore was lockdown allowing 33% completed.
Jackson allowed 66% completed.
J Mcourty played 4 snaps.

NE got burned by Hardman for a 48 yard bomb.
Kelce caught 7 of 9 for 77% and 66 yards
Hill caught 6 of 8 for 75% and 62 yards
Watkins had 50 yards.

Mahomes completed 65% of his throws and KC had the ball 34 minutes.

What's really special is the fact that the McCourty's are in their 10th season and playing their seemingly best ball since being drafted.

It must be the twins-brain factor. Now that they are playing on the same defense, they have that whacky twins telepathy going on lol.

What’s also not talked about is that Hill, Kelce & Watkins didn’t play together a good part of the year. They’ve averaged close to 40 PPG with the full offense the last two seasons.

Holding them to 4.8 yards per play is near dominant. If Jones & McCourty weren’t hurt tbey may have been shutdown.

This is the same secondary that won a Super Bowl in 2018 and put on a historic showing in the big game.

When they played the Chiefs Jason McCourty was injured, along with Jon Jones he's the speed guy you'd use to cover Tyreek and Hardman. They don't tally the score using yards.

The Pat's defensive backfield is the best in the league, led the NFL in INT's last year. If the defensive front can be as good or better than last year they can be improved. Their safeties are deeper and better than last year assuming health.

I didn’t like how they played scared against KC.

So why did we trade Harmon again?

Yeah, the memories, but Its 2020

The article is based on 3 current Pats DBs heading into THIS season. KC 2nd year WR Mecole Hardman will be better this year make no mistake about it. The KC pass game could blow up more if this Brian Westbrook type RB pans out in Helaire from LSU.

No, but NE did not dominate the KC pass game and holding the football for 8 minutes moire than NE counts for something.

Bottom line is in 2019 NE beat only 1 top 10 passing offense in Dallas.

The Patriots offense wasn't good. They ranked 17th in points per drive, their red zone offense was atrocious. If the offense controls the time of possession or simply scores with better efficiency they beat better teams. Complementary football...

The Patriots defense conversely was ranked #1. Everyone wants to hem and haw about the rushing yards they allowed... if the offense could have scored worth a damn they could have played with a lead forcing opponents to abandon the run.

The defense was the best in the NFL, the offense was around 17th best or worst. Often they were only in games because the defense forced so many turnovers and prevented points.
