People knocking Chung for his play last year, forget that he broke his arm in SB 53 & also had chest and heel injuries last year. While we do in fact need some youth injected, I still believe he has quite a bit left in the tank. Plus, he’s an excellent locker room presence, provides great contract value & mentor for players such as Dugger, Davis, Brooks Gant, Bryant, Pickett & Phillips (to a lesser extent). Obviously, not all of these guys will make the roster.

...Let's be frank. The Antonio Brown experiment was a disaster. It wasted time, money, and attention that could have been given to developing other receivers. Josh Gordon, as nice and intelligent a man as he is, let the Patriots and Tom Brady down. Addiction is a difficult thing to overcome, and it was a sad situation.

They released Demarius Thomas instead of trying to see if that might work out. Harry was hurt for much of his developmental season.

It's time to turn the page. Those dynamics will not be in play in 2020. The O-line is back intact and has better depth. Danny Vitale replaced Develin. The two new tight ends offer promise. I hope they learned from that ridiculous diva WR shuffle.

Brady and his frustration with seemingly everyone is gone. Let's see what kind of chemistry the youngsters develop, and let's see what kind of leadership Edelman can provide.

There's no way they expose Stidham to anything like Antonio Brown. They only went in the direction of a diva WR because of trying to optimize Brady the veteran, who could adapt instantly and not be influenced by Brown's behavior.

Chung had to leave the game during the Most Important 3rd Down of the Season.

Seems that he's constantly being removed from games because his body can no longer absorb full-time the hits that are required of the position...

I don't believe that he has much, if anything, left in the tank...same as his broken-down '09 draftee Edelman.

I'm not really blaming them, much...10 years in the league will do that to a body, especially the body of a somewhat-undersized box Safety & of a slot WR...

As many times the Pats play 3 safeties and the fact that Davis is ST guy, it's safe to assume BB will carry 6 safeties. I wouldn't be shocked if JoeJuan gets time at safety, like McCourty. Not saying it will happen. If I had to predict I'd say the stays at CB. I think Brooks makes the team as last safety.

I think this is all part of Belichick looking to combat the Chiefs, Ravens, Bills, etc.. Increasingly, NFL offenses are RPO looks with lightening fast offensive weapons running laterally across the field and quarterbacks who can exploit holes in the defense with their legs. How do you defend misdirection with speed like this while avoiding being gashed by running QBs? With a millions in-the-box safety types and smaller, fast linebackers. We could potentially have a combination of Chung, Phillips, Duggar, Uche, J. Williams and even this kid from Wyoming, Maluia, on the field. I think they are all being brought in to try to cover these offenses as well as covering tight ends and slot guys running across the middle of the field. They are all bigger hybrid guys who will, I imagine, line up at linebacker, off the edge, as well as at safety and look to punish running quarterbacks and wideouts running horizontally across the field. I'm actually excited to see what Belichick is looking to build defensively this year. I think he realizes that the future of defense has to be with this kind of hybrid look and nearly all their defensive acquisitions seem to have this concept in mind. Everyone looks to the Titans game at their Achilles heel but the Titans offense was nearly unique in the NFL and besides, the Pats defense gave up 13 points that day (it was the offense being unable to score that cost us that game). Rather, it was against Baltimore that the D really struggled and it looks like we're undergoing a rebuild with that in mind. I wouldn't be surprised if we carry about twenty safeties.....

It definitely is. He has the standing to make a power play like this but nonetheless I admire the conviction and willingness to be different to combat this wave.

I agree with you that he has the physicality and range to play deep, but aside from occasionally dropping deep to confuse the offense, I think they want him closer to the line of scrimmage. Especially early on, I think he will be rushing the QB more often than playing FS. I think that is why McCourty was re-signed; to play deeps in Cover 1, organize the younger players front of him as they learn this variable system and also to pass on the Patriots culture to the next generation of defenders.

Obviously not all of these players will have the capability to play multiple positions, but this is clearly how Belichick invasions he defense going forward. Whoever lacks the flexibility will be jettisoned and he'll move on and look for other guys (that will give posters ample opportunity to complain about Bill the GM). For him, player acquisition is a year round activity and this process looks to be just beginning to evolve.

Good post. A rebalancing of position amounts. More in the box safeties and fewer ILBs, fewer OLBs, fewer classic DEs on a team.
