1) Reduce stress on 2020 cap.
2) Veteran presence who still provided value last year (though should probably see reduced snaps this year).
3) Lots of 3 safety sets in this defense.
4) Without him Terrance Brooks is still seeing significant defensive snaps if one other guy goes down.

I'm confused why some are put off by this? It's not like we just signed him to 8+ million a year or something. It's a bookkeeping move, and Chung was always going to be on this team barring injury.

Right, but like I said, it's bookkeeping. Lower cap hit this year while you have 23m in dead money already, then a larger hit later when you have more breathing room. Even without needed to sign Dugger, they like to have some space for unexpected cuts, trades, etc. I haven't read where this puts them vs. the cap (after this plus the Dugger signing), but this probably won't be the last restructure we see, barring a trade of Thuney.

Yep, to me this re-structuring was done in order to sign Dugger & create a little cushion, because a Thuney extension is not only not imminent, but it's far from imminent, and the FO felt that this was the way to clear cap space that made the most sense to them.

We have 5 safeties: McCourty, Chung, Phillips, Brooks, and Duggar. We have kept all of our 5 corners: Gilmore, Jackson, McCourty, Jones and Williams. Finally, we have our 2 STers listed as DB's: Bethel and Davis.

This is a smart move to create cap space and add dummy years to Chung's contract. Dugger without benefit of OTA's, mini camps and all rookies will be behind. Phillips is ahead of him as Chung's backup. I could see Dugger playing some deep safety like Harmon or replacing Brandon King as a Big Nickel LB. Dugger will immediately be the Punt Returner this year. Remember that last years NFC Pro Bowl returner was a D2 player from our own backyard, Assumption College's Deonte Harris (NO).

They sign a player to a multiyear deal, then rework/extend that deal a year later... you can't know or understand what they get paid until a year or years later because the Patriots move money around. They've been doing this for years, they play the cap like a Stradivarius.

They need to account for Harmon's reps but also Ebner's reps, the guy played on almost every special teams unit. Plus Phillips or at least Cody Davis probably has a clause that voids their deal if they don't make the team out of camp. Competition is only a good thing.

Last year we say an inordinate amount of two and three TE sets, it especially bit them against the Ravens and other power running teams. Carry one less LB, carry one more SS.

The problems last season began on the OL with the injuries both inside and outside. Marshall Newhouse was a train wreck. Brady never knew what was coming from his blind side. The loss of Gronk to retirement was enormous. Develin's loss was very significant.

Brady was under pressure more last season than any I can remember. He often wasn't sharp because his throws were made in haste, and he grounded the ball a lot. Brady's frustration was evident.

Let's be frank. The Antonio Brown experiment was a disaster. It wasted time, money, and attention that could have been given to developing other receivers. Josh Gordon, as nice and intelligent a man as he is, let the Patriots and Tom Brady down. Addiction is a difficult thing to overcome, and it was a sad situation.

They released Demarius Thomas instead of trying to see if that might work out. Harry was hurt for much of his developmental season.

It's time to turn the page. Those dynamics will not be in play in 2020. The O-line is back intact and has better depth. Danny Vitale replaced Develin. The two new tight ends offer promise. I hope they learned from that ridiculous diva WR shuffle.

Brady and his frustration with seemingly everyone is gone. Let's see what kind of chemistry the youngsters develop, and let's see what kind of leadership Edelman can provide.

David Andrews being out and Wynn hobbled did not help as well. Injuries are a part of the game but if we don’t have injuries and maybe Gronk didn’t pull us around, we probably made a deeper run last year.

We'll see... BB usually fills an empty position by bringing in a value vet, drafting a player, then hedging his bets by bringing in an UDFA.

One of them will work out and competition breeds competitive teams, the best players will make the team and play.

This guy does a nice job showing the key role Chung plays as a special safety in the box shutting down the run like a linebacker and being able to take on the opposing TE

People knocking Chung for his play last year, forget that he broke his arm in SB 53 & also had chest and heel injuries last year. While we do in fact need some youth injected, I still believe he has quite a bit left in the tank. Plus, he’s an excellent locker room presence, provides great contract value & mentor for players such as Dugger, Davis, Brooks Gant, Bryant, Pickett & Phillips (to a lesser extent). Obviously, not all of these guys will make the roster.
