I guess that you have a contact within the patriot organization. Otherwise, you could not reasonably make such statements.

HOWEVER, I would agree that is extremely unlikely that we extend Thuney if the team wants a significant home town discount. And, personally, I do not expect Thuney to accept such a discount. I also think that it would be malfeasance for an agent to recommend accepting a huge discount. Of course, the decision is Thuney's to make.

Pretty much this. I don't think the Patriots have ever held back from at least testing the waters about whether a player will take below market value. A "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take" approach.

I've never understood why folks think that a player would sign a certain contract to play for the patriots, just because he signed a contract to play for someone else.

There was confusion, so let me be more clear.

Say, a player signs with Team X for $7M of guaranteed salary and no incentives for his 2020 services.

If the patriots offer the same $7M, I presume that the team believes that he fits in our system and is worth that amount to the patriots.

QUESTION 1
What are the chances that the patriots made an offer at a lower amount. Why should a player accept a lower amount?

QUESTION 2
Is it possible that the patriots offer the same contract? Why do you presume that the player should have signed with the patriots if the offers were the same?

QUESTION 3
Is it possible that the patriots offered more (they did with Karras)? Why do you believe that a player would automatically accept a patriot contract for more money?

THE BOTTOM LINE
There are lots of factors that go into what we offer a player, including perceived value and perceived fit.

Also, there are many factors that go into a player's decision to sing a contract with a given team.

Yes, the team would be younger if we traded away all those players. Of course, it is unlikely that we would be able to secure players anywhere near as good. We would be accepting at least 2-3 years of failing to be competitive. But we WOULD be young. I understand that they add 2 games to your win total if you are in the bottom quarter of average age. NOT

Posters can never know that the patriots didn't ask or that they did or didn't offer a deal, certainly not whether the team offered a reasonable deal.

Thuney is 27 years old now. It would be safe to say baring injury or a massive decline in talent, He could play until his early thirties. I'd give him 5 years at "X" with a guarantee and looking at things today, maybe his agent says take the deal. Actually his Franchise tag might not be unreasonable when we think back.

Are you are saying that it is reasonable for the patriots to offer a reasonable 5 year deal with a significant guarantee.? Ok, I agree. However, why do you believe that the team will offer a deal anywhere near what Thuney can get elsewhere.

I don't think that patriots believe (or will) that $15M for one year of the services of an OG is reasonable. We're not talking about $15AAV after all. If we didn't have Thuney, would we sign him for $15M on a one year contract? Of course NOT.

With the new CBA adding 4 players to every roster (two active roster and two practice squad slots), the Patriots will have all sorts of room to add linemen and quality TE to the current group. The new CBA is favorable to teams and doesn't really punish them unless a player outplays his contract by making the pro bowl or other awards.

I think there's an excellent chance they extend Thuney and spread out his fully guaranteed $14,781,000 cap hit over two or probably three years by converting some to roster bonuses, and adding incentives. They always have % of offensive snap bonuses in their OL contracts. They need the cap space and I think it all depends on if they get their targeted players in the draft and what they do in free agency.

If BB can draft two quality linemen plus a blocking TE in the first 4 rounds, the current group will be fine and be affordable under the new CBA, especially if Andrews can come back. The word is that he will, but it'll be wait and see how he fares in practice and the preseason.

I think BB will go tackle with his 1st round pick. There are five legitimate tackles on the board, so one of them ought to be there at 23.
