If this is a full evaluation/rebuild year, I could see a Gilly trade for pick(s) and then using that draft capital to build the roster.

The Patriots plan to compete this year. They picked up Jason McCourty's option, signed his brother Devin, franchised Joe Thuney, and re-signed Matthew Slater.

They may trade some more veteran players as they did with Duron Harmon. Mohammed Sanu would fit that category though coming off his injury it may have to wait and would likely be for much less than the 2nd rounder we gave up at the deadline last season. Who else... maybe John Simon, Patrick Chung, Rex Burkhead and the like as the team values youth over experience as part of a re-tool. I won't say rebuild because I think the team is still good.

I think they'll keep Gilmore because he is their best player.

I think they'll sign Thuney to an extension to create a lot of space too.

I tend to disagree. Jason McCourty's option was a cheap no-brainer and Slater's and Devin's value lies in leadership on ST/defense and perpetuation of team culture for the rebuild. Thuney is relatively young (27) and O-linemen can still be productive into their 30s. And if you're going to indoctrinate a new QB and skill players, having a solid O-line is the first ingredient.

It is early, but this is the worst analysis of the year, by far. There is exactly ZERO reason to trade Gilmore for picks in the hope that we could acquire someone as good as Gilmore next year. Cutting your best player, in his prime, is just plain NUTS!

Consider that we have zero. We need a couple of million for the draft and say another 8 for the rest of the year (not counting relatively expensive free agents). That is a TOTAL of $10M.

There are many, many ways to find that money and lots more.

Yes, I think that it is a strange thought to look through the roster and find our best player, playing under a reasonable contract; and then want to trade him for a couple of picks. And all this is done to secure a few million in cap space that can be gotten so many other ways.

There are several choices in addition to acting on Thuney before July. And yes, we can gnash our teeth when the league takes away a pick after we franchise and trade within a couple of weeks. IMO, Thuney could be extended at any point, but trading him wouldn't happen until at least June. There are lots of other options between now and then.
