Perhaps even more we need tests that show who has already had it and have developed immunity/antibodies. Those sort of tests are critical for health care workers and eventually the rest of us.
Agree completely.

I think it was Dr Brilliant in Wired magazine who suggested those who are/have immunity to C19 are researched, wear bracelets, etc.

As a matter of fact, it is enough. Keeping infected people away is the ONLY thing that prevents the spread. Testing itself doesn’t prevent the spread unless it’s accompanied by a change in behavior. Plenty of people just do whatever they want.

There are different theories about how to defeat this virus. Controlled mitigation is probably the best way. Allow people to battle the virus so that they develop antibodies for it while keeping our hospitals from being overwhelmed. Anyway please be safe.

While watching the dog & pony show on March 13th when he brought out all the private companies, I asked:
I wonder where the head of FEMA is in all this.

Just heard that FEMA got involved a week ago. The task force was created in late January but FEMA got involved a week ago? Poor FEMA guy is scared shytless to say the wrong thing (truth) to avoid a Twitter barrage.

WTF, was someone thinking the private sector was going to handle emergency response for a nation of 340 million people? That's messed up man.

We're still waiting for Defense Production Act to be used. Apparently, we're just going with companies volunteering to help instead of mandating it.

The roll out of 400,000 test kits is welcoming news. That means we'll see a huge spike in new cases and eventually deaths but it also means we're doing whatever it takes to get out in front of this. Hopefully we'll avoid the worst case scenarios by a long shot.

Let’s hope people remember that more kits = more positive results. And not freak out even more when they see the positive numbers skyrocket. Once we have more testing it will become clearer that the death rate on this is way lower than people fear it is.

What does that imply exactly? That it's ok they died because they were physically weak anyway?

Asking respectfully. No snark intended.

I'm just not sure if it's a statement of fact or a justification.

Elderly person has Congestive Heart Failure/Diabetes is puhsed over the edge by a cad Flu virus. That is what happens to the majority of the ~20,000 who die of the flu each year.

Hearing a $4 trillion aid package? Wow!!!!
Where are the Blue Dog Dems?

The death rate is wholely dependent on whether or not we can keep our hospitals from being overwhelmed. If we can the death rate will be low. If not then it will be high.

These responses a lighting fast compared to the way government usually works. See government responses to previous viral outbreaks like swine flu, ebola ect.

You seem like a reasonable poster, so let's try and discuss this rationally.

Does the fact that China kept the information quiet for weeks mean anything? I'm pretty sure nobody but China realized how serious this was at first.

What about China's ability to completely shut down their population? Could that have helped them compared to free countries? Our daughter in law has family in Beijing and they went on lock-down fairly early.

I also wonder what this country needs to do to be more prepared for the future. It would probably help to be less dependent upon foreign countries for our medical supplies.

Sure, there is maximum responsibility on China's shoulders. Heck, if as a result of this pandemic, they end up banning their wet markets and illegal wildlife trade for good, it will be a major positive for the world. That is the noise that needs to made around the world. The cover-up is just the symptom, the disease is the massive wild animal illegal trade and farming that is fueled by Chinese demand. That **** has got to STOP.

As soon as Beijing got involved in the Wuhan case, the cover-up administrators got canned and they clamped down hard on not just Wuhan city but the whole province of Hubei. Like it or not, their system has proved much more effective in management of population-scale problems than ours. From mobilization of a massive number of health professionals, to building new hospitals, to total shutdown of the effected areas, they basically showed the world what needed to be done. We all saw the youtube videos and news footage of the Hubei and Wuhan lockdown - medical staff in full bunny suit and outdoor areas being sprayed down. This was early February. That should have sent alarm bells ringing all over our administration given that we know that for cultural reasons we cannot lock down in that way. Instead we were caught with our pants down with slapstick-style actions.

We got a CDC that apparently cannot even cook up a test given ample time to prepare even when there was a WHO test that was being successfully used around the world. We got a president that initially downplayed the whole thing for a whole month and when **** finally hit the fan says he takes no responsibility and wants to shift all responsibility to China. I don't know if this guy is doing comedy or if he even means anything that comes out of his mouth - I just can't take him seriously.

China is responsible but ultimately they have got it under control. As have Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea. Now is not the time to be antagonizing the people that can help us both figure it out as well as have the immediate capacity to produce the basic supplies like masks, suits, medical devices, and medicines we are going to desperately need.

To me everything just reeks of American arrogance and complacency, we think that bad things in the world just couldn't happen here. We have got to lose the Hollywood image of our institutions where everyone is so awesome and the government has everything under control, our people are smarter and will figure everything out, the doctors will save me no matter what happens. God forbid, if there is every any bioterror or bio-warfare in the world, China has demonstrated that they can handle it and we have demonstrated that we will not. To be better prepared in the future, we have to let go of the notion that we are the best and realize that we are in the same **** as everybody else.

But would have otherwise survived if the hospitals weren't overwhelmed. That's not flu like.

Yikes that Atlantic article is damning.

To quote the title of the book about Jim Morrison "Nobody Gets Out of Here Alive".
The Flu is always culling the Senior Population as we get older (I am 67 for the record).
There was an ex Gov of Colorado from the 90's IIRC who said that half of a person's health care cost occur in the last 6 months of life, IOW we try even when things are hopeless.

We are human and mortal sh!t happens.

Don’t be a tribal hack. Its is only enough of a measure if you want to set the bar so low that Trump still looks good.

Yup and this is the point that some people keep missing for some reason. Sure the virus isn’t killing at a high rate if serious cases can be treated. But if this spirals out of control, which is likely, hospitals will not be able to adequately treat everyone. The serious cases that could have been successfully treated may go untreated and the death numbers sky rocket.

Reeks insular thinking as well.

The Admin didn't want to **** up the economy which is obviously incredibly influential in presidential elections.

No, they do not. They lie like white on rice.(No pun)
I've backed my words up, can you?
Keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better. It’s no different than the “but the Patriots cheat” line we are all so used to.
