Thank you for the link. The Atlantic has been excellent through this cl*sterf*ck. They have talked to the leading scientists and presented the information from them very clearly. Of course, the information points to some clear conclusions and people who don't like those conclusions will block themselves to the information and pretend that the experts aren't to be believed. That's life.

Trevor Bedford is evidently a scientist right at the forefront on this. He had a twitter thread the other day that points forward positively:

You guys want to revisit a simpler time, re-read the beginning of the thread, when yours truly, not wanting to make waves, timidly asked whether, if the unthinkable happens, they'd play games in empty stadiums. Some of those early posters have made themselves scarce. 13 buddy, God bless you, you don't give up as easily. Hope you're right about the quinine cure.

1 week ago, 60 Americans had died of the virus. This week, more than 300.

Unlike the "infected" number, the death number doesn't change because you are testing more.

This could be an outlier. But let's say it's not.

One more week's fivefold increase makes 1500.
Two more weeks makes 7500.
Three more weeks makes 37,500.
One month makes 187,000.

The only effective measures anywhere thus far seem to be social distancing and lockdowns. Let's hope that's effective, now that ****'s getting real.

The Feds are mysteriously abandoning the states in terms of equipment, with the toddler in chief criticizing the great waste of disposing of single use masks and gowns.

Keeping my eyes peeled for the green shoots, of course. Mentally prepared for numbers like the above. Can't really be mentally prepared for a personal impact but who can?

You seem like a reasonable poster, so let's try and discuss this rationally.

Does the fact that China kept the information quiet for weeks mean anything? I'm pretty sure nobody but China realized how serious this was at first.

What about China's ability to completely shut down their population? Could that have helped them compared to free countries? Our daughter in law has family in Beijing and they went on lock-down fairly early.

I also wonder what this country needs to do to be more prepared for the future. It would probably help to be less dependent upon foreign countries for our medical supplies.

Even the left leaning Snopes fact check says Trump never called the virus a hoax. I’d encourage you to go back and listen to what was actually said, instead of what it says on your Facebook feed. This whole “Trump called it a hoax” is like a litmus test for how rational or unbiased a content source is on this topic.

In context, Trump did not say in the passage above that the virus itself was a hoax. He instead said that Democrats’ criticism of his administration’s response to it was a hoax. He muddied the waters a few minutes later, however, by comparing the number of coronavirus fatalities in the U.S. (none, at that point in time) to the number of fatalities during an average flu season, and accusing the press of being in “hysteria mode”:

The ‘cats out of the bag’ moment of realization should have been when Iran’s first reported cases were 2 deaths, followed by confirmed cases in nearly every MENA country. I had a post about this in some “disappeared” thread that was about corona very early on. Part of me believed Trump has an earnest effort in the beginning because I thought they actually understood what they were up against but naturally it was all fluff. The ‘15 to zero’ cases bit was where I knew it was entirely unchecked. It was a outbreak response akin to our 09 playoff loss to the Ravens. And here we are. Preparing some Americans to have last rights read via teleconference with our loved ones in quarantine.

I think one of the more frustrating aspects are people who try foolishly to defend it. Well it’s only 50, China has 3000. Well it’s only 150... 300... wouldn’t be so bad without NY or WA. Down the line tribal ********. Im not a Trump guy but I loved seeing Soleimani whacked, he was a bad guy and he was very ****ing effective. I can call a spade a spade even if I don’t like the brass.
