but China's public health interventions are likely to be much more effective than the US. That's in part because they put an entire region under military quarantine, but also because they set up a huge fever clinic system and tested people en masse.

US - 40 deaths

China - 3000 deaths

Local and State governments are way ahead on this thing and taking initiatives on their own to address this pandemic, such as Cuomo in NY. Kudos to them.

But if you're talking the federal government, e.g., from the very top, then no, we don't have leadership or anyone taking initiative, only a very misleading oval office address from the other night that was flat out full of lies.
You didn't answer the question.

You want to rip the US Gov a new one i'm on board w/ that but don't sit there and contend the Chinese Govt is. One that has one the worst records of human rights in the world.

Utter nonsense from one official in China being defensive, ok. Not quite “they.”
I highly doubt a Chinese official went rogue on Twitter without it being approved by his superiors

There's absolutely nothing stopping us from having a government that can be agile, focused, and incredibly responsive to pandemics. We know how to do it. It is just a matter of will.
I'd love to agree with you but I don't.

Yes, clearly the 10 days in which the US has been dealing with significant spread is comparable to the four months China has been. To say nothing of the fact that a lack of testing means that number in the US is likely lower than reality.

or higher

Did the selfish assholes who bought up all the cold/flu medicine, toilet paper, water and cleaners vote for red or blue? Either way they have left my family behind to suffer. I don't care who you voted for. Loading the guns tonight....

Who lacks confidence in the government? Don (I think I just sh!t my pants) Lemon of CNN, that guy Rachel Maddow of MSNBC, ABC's George Stephanopolis and you? Personally, I'm as thankful as I could possibly be that Hillary isn't in there making decisions now.

Anyone with an IQ above room temperature.

I'd give you some of my anti-bacterial/sanitizer stuff .... being a teacher, my wife consistently buys it by the case and we had a ton before the poop hit the fan.

Happens. See all the regional Communist officials who were “removed” from their posts in Wuhan for their slow or improper handling of the outbreak. Things get said or done and then are either approved or not approved.

Are you saying the US Government and it's policies and systems is inferior to the Chinese Government? A government that didn't do a f-ing thing about this until it was already an epidemic?
The optics for China are awful but that view conflates the CCP to some monolithic entity. With 90 million party members they have quite a bit of logistical overhead. The regional heads in Hubei all got sacked very quickly when the national arm had to step in.

Not that I agree with everything the CCP stands for by any stretch but their national level response is admirable. We wouldn’t be able to replicate their ability to reallocate at the stroke of a pen. They also don’t have democracy so they can plan for 40 years where we can only plan in 4 year cycles.

Not that I want social scores, censorship, etc. But it’s not a binary good/bad. Their system has its merits and it is foolish to dismiss them because they hold beliefs that don’t mesh with ours.

I mean, just to be clear, your municipal water supply isn't in any danger and cold/flu medicine isn't going to be effective. Anyhoo good luck shooting the virus.
