Jimmy Garoppolites appreciation thread

If we had jimmy he’d be missing Edelman wide open in the middle of the field multiple times in the game. Imagine not seeing your best weapon open for a TD on 3rd down laughable

The 2nd play he shows which is the 3rd and 5 with 4 minutes left is the killer. Garoppolo had a guy break free on an in which was an easy 1st down and probably a lot more as it was straight man coverage. He just needed to step up, deliver it knowing he was gonna take a shot from the blitzer. Instead he throws it away. That wasn’t a hard throw and he blew it. We can complain all we want about Shanahan, but Jimmy G frooze late in that game.

I just don't understand how last year (and 2018) is evidence of any sort of decline by Brady when we've seen this happen before in 2006, 2009, and 2013.

We had a longer run of things going smoothly than usual, so I can understand getting used to that being the status quo, but sometimes an elite QB just happens to have a down year and historically Brady's haven't been his fault.

His last great year was 2017 (MVP) and his numbers weren't great in 2018 and 2019. His 2019 stats were worse than 2018 in fact, so argument can be made he's on the decline statistically. Why he appears to be on the decline could be a number of reasons such as lack of weapons or injuries to his throwing arm as was the case in 2019. Or it could be because he's getting too old. I think if you give him 1 more year with plenty of weapons we would have a definitive answer.

what’s worse is that’s not any guy open that’s there best offensive player, should be his first read and he was open immediately

The big turning point in this game was with 5:30 left, SF had a 2nd and 4 on their hmm around 42 yard line and a 20-10 lead. Instead of running with 3 great runners to choose from, a pass play is called, and this like many, was batted down. Result: SF suddenly under pressure, so KC blitzes, causes a wayward pass, the punt, and game over.. On comes the Chiefs... Just a couple more first downs and a field goal, and lots of time off the clock.... didn't happen because of that dumb play call.
Shanahan may be a good coach, but there has never been coaching malpractice the like of what he put forth in the second half of that game. "Let me see here, I have the best running game in the league, we've been running on them at will most of this game...I know! I'll do the same thing I did to piss away my last shot at a Super Bowl and pass the ball when I should be running!"

KC committed to stopping the run and Shanahan put his trust in JG to make the right read. He didn't. JG only needed to burn KC's desperate attempt one time but he couldn't and the rest is history.

JG can and will get much better. He has not been a starter for very long. If he can be coached up to move around in the pocket more, he will be a top 5-7 QB in this league. In fact If I were the Pats and TB agreed propose the following:

Pats sign TB for 3 years

Pats trade TB to niners straight up for TB

McDaniels coaches up JG to move around more smartly in pocket and be more elusive

Pats remain contenders for next 7-8 years

Actually this should be a Kyle Shanahan appreciation thread - all his Super Bowl bonehead offensive plans of abandoning the run with a secure lead and backfiring failed with Atlanta after going ahead 28-3 and again this super Bowl with Jimmy's 49ers ahead by 10 - the guy is a decent offensive mind but dumb as freaking rocks in the 4th quarter of Super Bowls

Maybe Kyle needs to get his dad on the sidelines to know how to close Super Bowls

This isn’t true. Brady was great in 2006. Considering Reche Caldwell was his #1 WR, he should have had a disaster year. It was a down year, but his stats and production wasn’t that much different than 2005 or 2004. And they went to the AFC championship game with a #3 or #4 quality at best WR receiver as their #1 receiver.

And 2009 he was coming back from missing virtually all of 2008 with an ACL tear and then surgery complications that set him back. So any decline that year was physical which kinda bolster my case.

He did lose his focus in 2013. But that was because of lack of training. But even if this situation is the same, are you going to tell me that Brady is going to refocus himself and put his football career ahead of his personal life during the off-season at age 42 like he did when he was 35? Brady is at the end of his career. He isn’t going refocus himself again like he did during the off-season in 2014. And even if he did, are you sure his body could rebound like it did back in his mid 30s.

Again, Brady is 42 years old and will be 43 at the start of next season. Why is it crazy to suggest that age is starting to affect his skills? People act like it is some insane idea to suggest. I didn’t say Brady is done. I said his skills are eroding a bit and he probably will never be elite again and his ceiling is probably above average.

It is, IMHO, pure tribalism in 98% of those posts. It is reptilian, not rational. You are "criticising" "our" "leader". No reason to be surprised that you and others get disproportionate responses.

I too enjoy the speculation about how well Brady will perform going forward. This isn't a crisis, it's just sport; and none of us really know, we are all just thinking (or reacting) out loud. It needs to be fun.

FWIW, I think you are right. Far more than ever before, Brady's next (and last) couple of years will depend on the talent he has around him. That's one reason why I remain open to the idea of him going elsewhere - it is a low probability, but if the talent gap between the Pats and Option A is huge, he'll be tempted. He's a proud guy.

He did lose his focus in 2013.

In 2013 all his receiving options died and he had to throw to absolute bums with no future like Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce and Kenbrell Thompkins.

If a single one of those guys went on to do ANYTHING in the league I could MAYBE buy a take that gave Brady some blame there. But they were all absolute career zeros before, during and after 2013. That year was lost entirely due to lack of weapons.

Well, and the defense being mediocre.

Nonetheless, Brady had lost focus/was not giving it his all in 2013 into 2014.

This is easily shown by the fact that after the 2014 debacle against KC, Brady suddenly “rediscovered” the full pocket mobility he hadn’t shown for years, since before his knee injury.

Good post. It's also a VERY low probability he'll reach another Super Bowl with New England. No way can the Pats afford both Brady and the elite surrounding cast he would need to achieve a first-round bye then beat the likes of Baltimore and/or KC and win the Super Bowl, especially with such a brutal regular-season schedule. The 2018 season was a highly fortunate turn of events.

@shmessy thinks he's a great coach

I agree that Shanahan didn't do JG any favors asking him to do something he isn't capable of doing consistently but the point of the thread was aimed at those who thought that keeping JG and letting TB go was the decision BB should have made a few years ago and that they were wrong.

Some of the Garoppolites were still chirping after TB made it to two more Super Bowls and winning one.

I like JG as a good young QB but the point remains that getting to and winning Super Bowls is extremely difficult. Moving on from an MVP to a flashy unknown would have been foolish.

When KC starting stacking the box with an extra safety, they were daring Jimmy G to throw it and it worked for them. Good game plan by Spagnuolo. Their D made more plays in the end to win it, while SFs defense was allowing Mahomes to run around extending drives.

The odds with Brady are higher than without. Injuries were the number one contributor for missing out this season.

Had Brady had Andrews and Devlin they would have been in the AFCCG. No doubt.

Perhaps, but they probably wouldn't have won in KC again with that receiving corps/OL. Now you have a team in 2020 that's facing significant turnover on both sides of the ball so it's much more daunting than just replacing last season's injured missing parts. Sure, the playoff odds might be higher WITH Brady but not high enough to really get anywhere, which argues for a rebuild.

They would have played KC in Foxboro with those two healthy. I'd give that game a coin flip. Their running game would have been much stronger imo, which would have opened up the passing game. I understand that's just my opinion and understand that it's debatable.

As far as the roster turnover goes there are questions after every season and always a few surprises so I'll wait before commenting on that. But if they want to compete for a championship next season Tom Brady is the only answer.

Any " Bridge" QB costs them just as much as Brady does with the 13 million dead money included. So no real cap space gain but a huge talent loss.

If they go with Stidham ( 1 million + 13 million) they'll save approximately 16 million to spread around. Can you honestly upgrade the team enough to offset the difference between Stidham and Brady with the additional 16 million? No, I don't think so. Again just my opinion.

So they need to sign Brady.
