Nice read from Wetzel:

One more ride for Tom Brady in New England, then nothing promised

Some good stuff here:

"Eight times he posted unbeaten regular-season records at home. Dallas, Chicago, Minnesota, Cincinnati and Browns, among others, never beat Brady there. He’s 6-0 against Pittsburgh (playoffs included). He’s 16-1 against Buffalo, the lone loss coming when he was subbed out in a final week game to rest for the playoffs. His current nine-game home win streak against the New York Jets includes a three-game stretch where the Pats won by a combined score of 105-12."

I WILL be nostalgic the day he will retire or if he will dress another uniform...

What most caught my eye:

"Saturday will be his 152nd game (playoffs included) at Gillette. He’s 115-19 during the regular season and 14-3 during the playoffs. Not only has no other quarterback ever won so many games in a single stadium, he’s the only quarterback to even reach 100."

That translates to a regular season home win % of .858, a playoff % of .824 and an overall home mark of .854. Belichick once said "Stats are for losers, the final scoreboard is for winners." Over the course of a career no one in their home stadium has ever owned the final scoreboard the way The GOAT has. The results are staggering.

My dad just sent this to me. Loved it.

"This is the closest thing to Bill Russell retiring"

Nothing promised is about the right thing to assume, and furthermore right on point to say that nobody knows what will happen, including BB or Brady.

Here's what I'm pretty sure is going to happen: BB is going to play hardball and let Brady hit the open market and explore his options (same thing BB did with Hightower, et al), but will not offer more than a team-friendly deal, and only for one year, if anything.

A few franchise are going to throw everything they have at him, and not just that- but a multi-year deal which would no doubt be tempting in terms of security as far as Brady's goal of playing until he's 45 (which I very much doubt will happen).

Does Brady take the security of a multi-year deal and go somewhere and start from scratch? Or does he stay home and take a lesser deal for just one year at a time?

Or does Kraft interfere? He didn't interfere this year or do anything about Brady's expiring contract.

IMO, the possibility that Brady is playing his last home game tomorrow is very real.

Might be a 2 year deal to make the cap hit digestable for 2020 but I 100% agree.

Tom wanted contractural freedom....he's getting it alright.

My prediction remains the same it has been all season long: Brady gets resigned one last time. Probably a 2-year deal that fits the team’s cap (i.e. friendly). Brady knows that he can probably get paid a few dollars more elsewhere, but at 42 with 3 maturing kids, and plenty of $$$$ already in the bank, he's not chasing money. He's chasing Lombardis. He’s not relocating to another state or region of the country altogether, just to keep on throwing footballs and make a few more shekels. Moreover, Brady knows he needs BB and his system just as much as BB knows he needs Brady. TB knows he isn’t winning anything with any of the teams that are QB needy. At 42 he is not going to learn a new system, get on the same page with an all new offensive coordinator, and most importantly – dozens of players on offense - it’s just not happening. If Brady was 10 years younger and less settled with his family life, sure, I could see him playing elsewhere. But given where he is at this point of his career, he either resigns or retires altogether. My bet is he resigns. He’s still hungry, but knows his hunger to win can only be satisfied with the Pats.

"If the Patriots can get past the Titans, they’ll travel to Kansas City, where they’d have to upset the Chiefs and then enjoy a slew of upsets for the AFC championship game to return to Foxborough."

If the Patriots beat the Chiefs, it would then require just one game's outcome to put the AFCCG in NE. That would be Buffalo or Houston beating Baltimore.

Lazy comment, but an otherwise good read.

Even more amazing is that he has 249 wins so if 129 of them are home then there are 114 on the road with 6 on neutral sites.
No one else has won 100 at home. It appears he has more road wins than anyone has home wins.

Imagine a similar scenario as Manning had in 2015 after leaving Indy. At this point in their respective careers, Brady would've dominated with the Denver offense that Peyton basically managed on auto-pilot because they had that defense. He may not be in peak form, but anyone saying Brady is done is either a hater or just stupid.

In my own opinion, based on what I've seen, heard him say, etc. I wonder if he's genuinely bothered by however the contract negotiations went or by something that was said during that span. Looking back, it sort of makes sense because there was seemingly a sudden break where everything just stopped and all of a sudden, we heard about the no franchise tag, his house going up for sale, etc. The whole demeanor and things that he's said make me feel like he's less angry and more hurt, especially since he's not the type of guy to be negative or say anything derogatory.

I honestly don't think he wants to leave/stop playing, but it seems like there's something there that made him suddenly question things a little more, which leads us to where we are now. I also believe the whole thing with AB/Josh Gordon was mentally draining...he invested a lot of emotional energy into both guys and ended up with nothing to show for it and he's essentially paying for it now. The team went from a pretty deep receiving core in the preseason to now being at this point in the year with two rookies, Edelman, Dorsett and Sanu. Brady's a good guy and he takes that stuff seriously. He tried so hard with both of those guys and invested so much, so I'm sure that's really, really disappointing, both emotionally and how it's hurt him on the field.

It's been a rough year. Watson, as I said in another thread, has been disappointing, the offensive line has been a mess all year because of injuries up until recently, but they still haven't been able to be consistent, etc. That, along with his elbow, I think has just made this year a grind for him. I'm sure in some way he feels some pressure if he quietly really has decided he doesn't want to be here after this year. Comparing to past years, he's not playing as loosely as he has (he seems a little tighter) and since he got hit on the elbow, that hasn't helped with some of the throws we've seen. Given that if he's really going to walk away, I'm sure he wants it to be on his terms and at a high level but I think overall he really wants to stay.

Now the only problem is, barring a flawless playoff run, I expect this offseason to be a little ugly. But deep down, I think Brady never wanted it to get to this point. All we can do now is hopefully enjoy one more run. I'm sure most people here would be O.K. seeing him move on with a ring and if that happens, winning it as a Wild Card would be another stamp on an unbelievable career.

I don't know...it's been a really strange year. But I'd be willing to bet Brady doesn't want to leave and would prefer things get worked out. Whether or not they do will likely be what we're all talking about but - hopefully - not for at least another month.

There's one thing that I'm sure of... there isn't one sports writer out there that has any more of clue about Brady's intentions than you or I no matter what they write.

Nothing is ever promised. Brady could suffer a career ending injury in this upcoming game and the whole contract thing becomes moot.

Hell, that goes for any player in any game. It’s a violent sport with high turnover.

For instance, it’s likely Pat Chung’s (three time SB champ) last game at Gillette and no one is freaking out.

Chung has a dead $ hit of $3.8m next year and only a $2m savings. Highly unlikely he is cut.

From hearing all these experts convincingly picking Tenn tomorrow, and our loss to a worse team last week when we had all on the line, I got this heavy feeling that tomorrow is our season's finale. And if so, it's hard to believe that TB isn't on his way out... but then again, it's so hard to say, because he's been here soooo long.... and yet such an early bow out.... gotta say he bows out too.

I think he's back next year unless Bill pulls the plug by either telling him they are moving on or lowballing him with his contract...my guess if he's not back its because of the latter

Simply a great post...and you expressed at best an opinion that is the same i have

Nothing to add...simply a perfect analisys

Well, I've worn the laundry since '74, and seen a lot of ups and downs with this team. I hate to see the end of an era, but it's happened here before. I can accept it and move on. I don't like it, but as coach says, "It is what it is."

I do have some positive thoughts about the playoffs. New England was the first team to winn 3 playoff games, all on the road, and make it to the superbowl. That was the '85 team, and they compare fairly well with the 2019 edition.

I look forward to the game on Saturday, and think there's a very real chance that Bill & Tom put a big time win over the Titans. I just feel it inside, and that's what I am going with.

Thank you Ian, this was an exceptional read.
The thought of Brady leaving to play for another team is something I don't even want to think about, if this is indeed his last game playing for the Pats then I hope he puts on a heck of a show and the fans that do attend are loud and raucous !

I think it simply boils down to this: the Patriots want to be playoff contenders every year—even after Brady moves on. Basically they have two options:
  • Pay Tom Brady $20Mish a year and give him the best supporting cast they can,
  • Pay a rookie much less than that and spend that money on role players.
The "losing" scenario is one where they have a rookie starting while paying a gigantic cap hit for a non-playing Brady. Whatever happens, I think that's the situation they want to avoid.
