Could Bolden have scored?

I still feel like there’s room for more creativity with onside kicks.

Watching replay of it, he definitely could have caught it. I’m not getting on his case about it though, he’s been fantastic.

He over ran it and that's why he couldnt catch it. He wasnt in position

Woulda been funny as all f*** to watch him try that

Why didn’t he just catch the ball when he got to it? He batted it forward instead. Was it that he wasn’t sure it passed ten yards?

It was so high all he could do was get a hand on it. Almost an amazing play. Almost.

If a kicker ever comes up with a way to kick it in a way that is highly reproducible to the point where you can actually practice an onside kick it would be gold. But the shape of the ball and the randomness of its bounces make this pretty seemingly impossible.

Curious what the league will do about the play. Am not a big fan of that proposed alternative scenario where you get one passing attempt with 4th and 12 (or whatever the yardage was) instead.

Agreed, wouldn’t want to see another rule change either. I never sensed that many injuries with onside kicks so I don’t know why they had to change in the first place.

As it is now, the standard approach has such a slim chance of working I don’t see what they have to lose to try something else. Random example, pick a specific place on the field for the kicker to aim for and have your fastest guy make a beeline for that spot. Or, kick it to the moon and replicate a Hail Mary scenario. Anything.

That can’t work. Receiving team will just signal for a fair catch and then no matter how fast your players are down there they’ll have to pull up and let the guy catch it.

That’s why even before the rule change all onsides kicks are played to hit the ground at least once before they get anywhere near the receiving team (other than the “kick it straight at someone’s face and hope it bounces off him” kind).

Right, of course. Sorry, it’s early.

EDIT: But there’s got to be a better way!

To claim they are "proactive".

Which, you know, might not be an overstatement. I don't know the math and research they did on it but I can see how the way it was setup it might potentially lead to more injuries than your standard play.

Maybe it is all ******** just to appear as if they are consistently doing "something" to make the game safer. Either way, I'd rather err on the side of safety than not.

Regardless, the better team won on Sunday...we only got back into it after a couple of garbage time TDs

Agreed, if we pulled that out it would have been clear that we STOLE one and not really deserved it.

There was a game recently when the kickoff rolled into the end zone.........no player fielded it and the refs blew the play dead?

Isn't it technically still a live ball and could have been recovered as an 'onside kick'?

I think the NYFL is catching on. I watched Atlanta pull off a couple in a row vs the Saints. I like the method that they and the Pats used but it requires a lot of luck on the high bounce.
