So anyone who caught Bill Belichick’s press conference this morning was treated to a dissection of the Air Coryell Chargers of early ’80s fame. Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, Chuck Muncie and Charlie Joyner operated the most explosive offense of the era.

Anyway, in the course of conversation, some genius asked Belichick what would have happened if the Chargers had beaten the Dolphins in that memorable 41-38 AFC playoff game in 1981. Would their downfield attack have become a blueprint for future squads, instead of the West Coast offense popularized by the Super Bowl champion 49ers?

Belichick looked a little confused when asked about the playoff loss. “You mean back in ‘72 or something?” he asked.

Nope, early ’80s. Belichick’s confusion was obvious of course, because the Chargers actually WON the game in question. They lost the AFC title game the following week in the cold to the Bengals, who ended up losing Super Bowl XVI to the 49ers.

So anyway, that question was my screwup for the day. If anyone reads the transcript and gets confused, the Chargers did indeed beat the Dolphins that day.

I like that John can laugh at himself. Good for him!

My reaction exactly. Me, I don't have an editec memory of games, not even just Pats games.
He did however make an utter fool of himself.

Yes, but he has my respect for owning up to it and laughing at himself (and correcting himself).

Contrast that with Jackie MacMullan, who last week sent many of us response e-mails completely defending herself for writing in the Globe that Asante Samuel had a tattoo that said "Get Paid". No correction necessary according to her.......and none coming, either. My estimation of her as a truthful and honest person was demolished with that.

I never thought I'd write this, but my respect for Tomase is now higher than for MacMullan.

I was attempting to agree with your post #2.

No prob, my bad. I misinterpreted your last sentence in that post. He did look foolish asking that question AND he did the right thing in owning up to it instead of going all legalese like some Globie would.

You lose a first, and 500K.

Tomase is always pretty good about being honest about any mistakes - or when his sources feed him something that doesn't pan out - and I appreciate him being secure enough to take responsibility and have fun with it. Other reporters make far more mistakes and never acknowledge it - and then get pissed at us for pointing it out.

Just read "I, Moron"...more on that later.....

Ya know,

That personal statement of fallibility has got to be some sort of journalistic first. Seriously, for a profession with a positive ranking even lower than congress, reporters have an awful lot of chutzpah.

I appreciate John coming out like that. It's a good sign. You'd never see that from a Globe or NYT employee.

Respects,

You mean you don't remember the opening day win over Buffalo in 1959 that ended in a 0-0 tie?

While I don't expect journalists to have photographic memories, how do you get that one wrong? That's the game that secured Kellen Winslow's legacy, with the famous shot of him being carried off the field, exhausted, as his teammates celebrated. It's one of the most famous NFL games ever. Really stupid.

Best that he do it lest someone else do it... good call on his part.

We all want to sound smart when it comes to football - local reporters especially so, even those who may have been toddlers at the time of the historically referenced game.

Tomase over-extended himself on that one and leave it to BB to know off the top of his head just what took place.
