You guys who sound like you want to burn the team down to the ground and rebuild - how did you make it through weeks 2 and 3 last year?

...or Week 15.

How many teams have a better #4 safety on their roster?

I agree we have insane depth at safety, but my argument in support of FCB would be, "Why was our #4 safety in on 3rd down when everyone in front of him was healthy/available?"

We could have won but we lost...Ravens playied well no doubt...

Ok...8-1...to the next...i am not worried a lot for 1 road loss...
The Pats settled, got the game back to 17-13, had the ball to start the half, were moving the ball then self-immolated and the game was effectively lost. They had an opportunity to sow doubt in the Ravens and instead, handed them all the momentum. It happens.

We built a smaller faster more multiple defense to deal with the chiefs, Saints, Steelers, Rams of the world rather than one that can shut down a running team. Can’t be everything for everyone.
Ultimately it makes sense. I’m not concerned that we can stop the Baltimore wildcats with scheme despite a lack of beef if we see them in January.
Yeah totally get the build of this defense in a pass heavy league, and love the way it’s constructed overall. More so feel like maybe one more piece on the DL would have been welcomed against the multiple likely playoff teams that run the ball well. Can’t have it all though I guess. We’ll see how Shelton and Butler do against other elite IOL when facing Philly and Dallas.

I was a fan of the 4-3 for this game. Seamed like a no-brainer even for this no-brainer of a fan.

Defensive issues early on are on the coaches too.

The D is not overrated at all. They ran into an unorthodox scheme from a physical, well-coached team with a QB that runs a freakin’ 4.4 (40) that had 2 weeks to prepare. Also, they’re (more-so) built to stop the pass. Silver lining: they’ve seen what needs to be corrected NOW and not in January. Also, I’m sure BB didn’t put his cards on film, due to the strong possibility that we see them again in 2 months. Relax, we’ll be fine.

Last year people were crapping their pants about how good the Ravens were.

We smoked the team that smoked them. (Yeah I know every year is different)

So I want to know how do you avoid good teams and win in the playoffs???

If you want to win a Super Bowl you need to win 3 tough games.

I agree, but I think there are some teams that present more favorable matchups than others. They're both good teams, but you might match up better against one than the other. Belichick dropped a game against Miami several years back in week 17, which appeared to be intentional, where they went for 2 at the very end of game after just scoring to tie it up. They just threw a pass way high into the back of the end zone, never gave the player even a remote chance to make the play and lost by 1.

Losing that game changed nothing for the Patriots seeding, but it changed the seeding of some other teams that were more favorable

Offense had been bad so no surprises there. D didn't have the task of playing a joke QB and they got exposed.

Pats played a cupcake schedule and thank God they did because they may not win their next 4 games against real nfl teams.
Sooooo, sounds like you really like our chances!

I am not sure I follow. They tried to play to where the strength of our defense is with multiple DBs. It didn't work and they got gashed against the run.

They played base which worked better against the run thanks to the heavier personnel. But then the Ravens started to attack LBs in space.

The reality is that in todays NFL you dont want to play base much. It usually simplifies coverages, you dont have as many installed looks given how rately it is used and your LBs are exposed against most TEs and RBs who can catch a ball in space.

If Shelton can't even hold up in 1v1s then you will need to play with a different front because if your nose tackle gets beat again and again you will never have gap control.

Hell I would have played almost exclusively cover 0 with an additional person up front instead of a safety and try to bait them into trying to hit homeruns via the pass. At least you are trying to make them attack your strength.
I’m saying we built a defense (personell)that is a terrible matchup against that anachronistic offense. And it showed.
But we also didn’t do the players any favors by coming out and treating Baltimore like they were kc.
You can’t build a team that matches up with everyone.
I’m not sure I saw it get much better as we got trampled in the 4th quarter too.

They should have gone big. (As big as they can at least since the dL is tiny) They should match the 1 Wr, 2 TE, FB,RB with a 4-4. You don’t need 2 corners against that. They should have treated it like a wildcat.

Face it, teams built like that are few and far between, so I agree with the way the defense was built. And teams like that aren’t a real threat when you can game plan for it in the post season. Just too hard to change everything in week 9 then scrap it.

in hindsight I think you either go big, like wise. Guy Shelton wise with jc ht and kvn and cheat Chung into the box, or you go quick and one gap.
BUT BEYOND EVERYTHING ELSE when a QB runs an option you don’t worry about guessing whether he will keep or pitch YOU PLANT HIM. YOU PLANT HIM. Don’t care what happens on that play you teach an option qb a lesson.

Damn right a 4-4... but 2 corners and 1 high safety. Dare them to throw all game. Jackson could arguably be the most athletic QB ever...I'd like to see him attempt 35+ passes against us.

We are seeing what happens when a defense doesn't play bum QB's consistently. Exposed. Last night was an eye opener.

Seems like that would have been a good response to the amount of unbalanced OLs they were attacking the Pats with. I’d love to know the reason why we didn’t.

This loss really puts things into perspective. Things could be worse, I could be a Jets fan.

Kinda alluded to that, " expanding" on what I wrote after watching again but more lack of adjustments in the Ken's thread I think.

Bill seemed furious last night. Deep down I think he's a lot more mad at himself than the players.

Only the positives.

I think James White had his best game as a Patriot. Amazing catch, powerful running. Who knew?

Sanu is getting into sync with Brady.

The hurry-up is a real weapon.

The disastrous play apart, Edelman was a monster, giving 110 per cent.

It's hard to say anything good about the defense, except that they weren't properly prepared for what hit them. I can remember three games when the defense was on the back foot from beginning to end, reacting too late to what was thrown at them: the beating by the Chiefs on opening day 2017, the 2017 Super Bowl -- and now this. In each case, they were out-coached for that game. But, as Brady said, it's one thing to play your best and get beaten, another to get beaten when you don't play your best. They now have a chance to work on their weaknesses.

Go Pats!

the game it reminded me most was when the dolphins unveiled the wildcat w/ ronnie brown

this gameplan is a 1 time thing, BB already has it figured out, ravens wont have a chance next game just like the dolphins got destroyed in the second meeting the year of the wildcat

They had issues with the run last season but we're able to cover it up in the post season run. They're pretty luck Todd Gurley was injured going into the SB

Need S to cover TEs and help vs run.
