Is his sole job returning punts? Does he do anything else? Other ST, WR reps? Anything? Is he just on the roster to spell Edelman from returning punts? I only ask because roster space is finite and we need WRs. Can Gunner come in and catch some screens? Seems to play well in space? Are the Pats grooming him to be the next Edelman/Amendola or the next Slater?

Just curious what everyone thinks.

Thanks

He's our PR...and I believe he plays on other core ST units...not sure which...

I'm honestly not sure why he's on the roster. Bill must see something worth trying to develop a la Julian Edelman. Gunner certainly isn't here for his current skillset which is pretty unimpressive

Gunner is pretty useless...aside from his reckless punt returns and his insane ability to fair catch punts with no defenders within 5 yards...

I think he plays on other ST units but I'm not sure. I can't remember the last time we had a player who's only snaps were at PR, so I have to believe he's doing more. I know I've seen him out there at WR when we've gotten really thin, but the fact that he hasn't even been targeted (I believe), is telling. He's not ready for that.

Love Gunner's current role and a role I dont care to see Edelman in anytime too soon.

He is usually listed as our 5th WR.

I would think that he is very vulnerable an upgrade, arguably more than anyone else on the 53.

Can't agree with those who say he's useless. We don't want Edelman anywhere near punt returning given his current physical state, and except for one bone-headed muff, Gunner has been sure-handed. If I am not mistaken I think there is a play or two during the last game that he got on the field as a WR. I know Slater did on at least one play.

Agree but you never know. He needs some weight and to improve 10x as a WR.

his other position is waterboi

Patriots have forced 29 punts, 10 more than any other team.
Gunner is 2nd in the league for return yardage but his 8.56 average is just 12th best

Like half of every 2019 Patriots game is watching the opponent punt. If there was ever a year where a PR secures a roster spot, this is it.

Agreed on Edelman, but what about Damian Harris?

You say just 12th best, and I get it because it's in contrast to the top ranking in total yards. But that still means at least 20 other teams aren't getting as much production per return as we are.

I remember the PatsFans.com "Lynch Mob" tirelessly questioning Edleman's inclusion on the roster for his first several years.
I was not here then, but suspected that was the case.

I’d assume he’s been told to be overly cautious when fair catching. He has fair caught a few that I thought he might have had some room to work. I also wish he would not signal fair catch if he is going to let it bounce. Throw a block on someone and hope it bounces through the end zone instead of letting the defense get there.

And it's a number suppressed a bit by some punts added in that should have been fair caught as well as a good return called back last week.

Such are the perils of small sample sizes.

At least he is not fumbling the punts. I think I saw him take a few snaps at WR late in the game. We all know how BB loves special teams, so surely a guy with the first name of "Gunner" is guaranteed at least three seasons.
