Official Post Game Thread- Pats beat the Jets

There is no positional group in the league that depends on continuity more than the OL and the Pats have less continuity on the line than at any time I can remember. They lost their center a week before the season and have started 2 tackles that they just picked up. Throw in the fact they lost 2 great blocking TE's and the 2 TE's on the roster have been banged up and it is not surprising to me that they have struggled running the ball.

Sony had the best post season running the ball for the Pats since Dillon and by all accounts "looked better" this pre-season. He has been hit deep in the backfield on numerous runs already this year. Seems awful premature to be questioning his ability all of a sudden.

I also do not buy into the fact that the Pats have played 3 bad teams as the Steelers have actually been solid this year. They lost a close one to Seattle after losing Big Ben mid game and were close yesterday at the 49ers. They may not have a good year now that Ben is gone but when the Pats beat them it was a solid win. Dolphins and Jets both clearly blow but the Pats did what you would expect and blew them both out.

You understand that when you look at a play and say the blocking sucked the fact that it was better on a different play doesn’t really matter right?

Actually, it's more about schemes and assignments and technique than plays. And it does matter. Otherwise, you would be blocking badly in two different schemes with different techniques, so there's more to fix. Different plays can have similar blocking schemes and assignments, requiring the same techniques.

Newhouse is the highest graded pass blocker in the league this week so far by PFF. 0 sacks 1 hit & 1 hurry on 48 pass blocking snaps.

I don't care who was rushing him. That's hilarious. Scar does it again.

We can only go by what we know but, as of now:

They didn't have to release Brown. They chose to, when it wasn't necessary. And it took just a couple of days to show why it was stupid. And, because this is a post-game thread, and I've now (sort of) commented on its impact on the game, I'm done with it in this thread.

Agreed. For what is once in a blue moon I am in total agreement. Today is why Krafty should have kept his yapper shut. A good D will make it infinitely more difficult to score as after JE went out they struggled offensively for the most part. Having AB out there makes a world of difference.

However the white knights here and elsewhere couldn’t help themselves and basically drove him out.

Since he got released by the Pats, how many new salacious allegations have surfaced? I’ve been busy but.....seems to me we know the answer to that. And that answer should tell the white knights everything but it won’t. They are already onto the next mission.

So the Patriots missed out on the modern-day record for fewest points allowed through the first three games (7) and the post-merger record (13) because of special teams and back-up QB gaffes. Devastating.

This was the first game in which they missed Gronk both as a blocker and a receiver. The offense looked like a unit going through some attrition right now. Defense looked phenomenal. Getting White, Edelman, and Develin back will get the offense looking like itself again.

Would be so awesome if camera angles like this were used in replays on TV which continues to be so unimaginative and uncreative.

With angles like this, the viewer can then appreciate the degree of difficulty involved in play execution, and just how good Brady is at placing the ball.

Hate the injuries.

Other than that 2 rookies cost us 14 points.

Defense is elite.

I was ok with the first TD. That one got me within 4 in the @alamo pool. The second one pushed me up to 11.

In the GDT one of the posters predicted a Gunner TD. He was correct but it's too bad it was for the other team.

We've given up 12 more yards on defense than the vaunted Chicago bears and the next best team (49ers) has given up 253 more yards.

But then again...the Bears have only played 2 games :)

As my post indicated, I am aware that they are being used differently at times. It's a bit of a stretch to say they are being used "completely differently" and I don't the comparison to Dorsett and jet sweeps at all.

So you think power runs are particularly comparable to the draws and whatnot what Burkhead has on his plate ?

The similarities end at a player is getting handed the ball and runs with it. Which is where the jet sweep analogy comes from. They are completely different types of players. Y

Would you also compare a slot corner and a outside corner, a pure slot receiver and a true X or a Y and F tight end ?

I too wish Michel could just morph through the solid bodies that his patchwork OL is incapable of blocking.

Sometimes you gotta wonder if people actually watch the games when they complain about Michel. Ironically most of them would be the first ***** about how little separation WRs are getting to defend Brady.

I pointed this out to the guys at my table at the bar when they were complaining.. I told them to look at the types of plays they were running with Michel compared to Burkhead.

I was told numerous times by the experts in this board that Mason is one of the best on the league...has he really gotten worse?

Lets repeat the usual Shaq Mason disclaimer. He is one of the best run blockers in the league, has gotten considerably better in pass-pro to the point where he is fine but still nothing special.

The gap between the two is based on how he essentially had to learn most of pass-pro after being drafted. His triple option days in college didn't provide many reps for that.

Not sour grapes here - just wondering if someone can clarify the blocking to the back rules, particularly with regard to the muffed punt.

Gunner muffs it and the Jets gunner crashes into him from behind - probably legal because he was attempting to tackle Gunner. Gunner gets fully turned around and goes for the ball when a 2nd Jets player pancakes him with a block to the back.

Was that a block to the back or was Gunner still a punt returner?

Could you please show which plays Burkhead ran through the "A" gaps in the first 3 games?

Mason looked human yesterday, imho.. He didn't look like one of the best run blockers. The Jets defenders were in the backfield on running plays way too much.

It was a live ball. That's why it was allowed because it looked like the Jets player was going for the ball.

Thanks. I found the section clarifying that. I figured as much since it was pretty obvious seeing it happen.

It is early in the season. If he keeps looking like this when we start hitting November/December it might become something of note to me. Until then all I want from this team are Wins, as few injuries as possible and continued improvement. Better to find flaws as early as possible.

Stats and setting records is for losers.
