Should Pats try to extend Dorsett now?

I do not know if we can extend him right now because of the cap.
He is a good kid. I do not understand why some members here want him gone like he is trash.

Dorsett on pace for a 1,000 yard season (1,072 if he repeats the last two weeks for 14 more games)

They should absolutely extend him given the uncertainty of Brown and Gordon long term.

Last year he had 12 catches in the first 2 games then 15 in the next 13.
This year he has 7 in the first 2 games.

He is a nice piece to have around for cheap but at 6 mill a year it sounds like too much.

He had a 7 game drought last season and people here want to lock him up in a long term money deal after a couple of good games.

He can be extended with no cap effect

That’s like a dozen guys on the Pats every year. Generic post. Is that why you didn’t put Dorsett’s name in your post?

They will let Dorsett test the market and I think someone else will sign Dorsett for more money. :)

I love the guy -- as two years of posts show -- but I don't see a reason to extend him. Chances are he will mostly be a third down valve down the line with AB getting more integrated and Harry coming back from IR.

Then roll the dice next offseason, let him test FA and see if his market makes any sense to match whatever he gets offered. Fair deal for both sides.
Agreed. Pretty much the same way they approached it last season and offseason. I really like him a lot. I don't see the production getting much higher than we've seen, though, if AB and JG stay straight and Jules stays healthy.

Seems like Dorsett have come a long way good for him... I hope he learns from AB some on the Field and not off it. We know the Defense ain't going to double him with the cast we have now. That said Dorsett is good #4 WR wish him all the best but I hope no Team pays him like a #2 or 3 WR.

But is he anywhere near what Demarius Thomas is going to do this year, PF2?????? So now he has "come a long way".

LOL - - he hasn't come as far as you have in the last 2 weeks. :D

.

I strongly disagree. I don't see how Dorsett should be worth less to us next year because he plays behind Brown, Gordon, and Edelman this year.

Dorsett is good enough to be one of our top 3, playing outside if Edelman is in the slot.
If Belichick can extend him, I suggest that he do it.

Why should we roll the dice next year? Let's start the offseason with Edelman, Dorsett and Harry (and perhaps Meyers).

Respect. But I'm sorry to say his role will almost certainly diminish once AB gets up to speed. It happened last season when Gordon started maturing in the offense. People are being prisoners you the past two games. I really like him and want him on this team. The guy catches everything. But he's limited. The guys in front of him are, at the very least, far more athletic and can also catch the ball very well. Plus my assessment of him was in regard to this season, not next.

Extend the beast!

Would a Danny Amendola contract make sense? 5 years, 28.5M with $10M guaranteed. I'm not sure if he will accept this though.

I think he will test the market, he did it this year and didn't work out. That is why he signed the one year prove it deal
The way he is playing I believe he will get the contract he wants or close to it.

That's such a dumbass hot take, even though it's by Bedard.

It would quite frankly be a miracle if AB and Gordon were to be on the field for all of the remaining 14 games plus playoffs. AB probably has a suspension coming his way, and who knows how long Gordon will last, as well as if Edelman can stay injury free.

Dorsett has been the one constant in this offense and he is just rounding into form, getting on the same page as Brady and seeing the same thing as Brady is seeing.

One difference is likely to be that the Patriots will be in a position to use more 4WR sets. Another is that Brady is obviously a bigger fan of Dorsett now than he was before, and that bigger fandom is being earned on the field. So, sure, Dorsett will quite possibly be relegated to WR4. But, in this offense, WR4 should get a pretty good number of opportunities, unless the team needlessly goes whole hog into feeding Brown the ball.

We seem to be talking past each other.

You seem to saying that Dorsett doesn't deserve a new contract for 2019 because he his production will decrease as the year goes on. OK, that presumes that AB is still around, but that's fine. You measure Dorsett by how he compares to AB, Gordon and Edelman.

I will stipulate that Dorsett will play less if all three in front of him play, and that he is nowhere near as good as they are. I believe that this is irrelevant to an 2020-2022 extension.

Unless we extend both Brown and Gordon with 2020 contracts (extremely unlikely), I believe that Dorsett would be an important key to our offense in 2020-2022.

But will another team envision Dorsett as a #2 and be willing to pay him more than the Pats will want to pay.
How much will he have to be paid to qualify for a 4th or 5th comp pick?

Very valid, Deus.
