Gridiron, Gone: After the NFL, peace for some, uncertainty for others

“I have to move on,” says Mitchell. “I know that. I have to come out of this grieving phase, and I’m working on that. I can’t stay here, because if I do, I’m as good as dead.”

One other thing: I asked Mitchell if he hates football. “Oh no, I still love it,” he says. “I have a girlfriend and we still play catch out in the front yard. I love the game. I really love it.”

Sounds very depressed and I hope he's getting help. Brutal

At least he is being honest with himself and with others. That's the first step one takes in the process of healing.

How much money did he make? 1 or 2 Mi?
At some point he will have to realize he's young, healthy (not from a professional sport standpoint) and made more money than the average person makes in a lifetime. Well managed that could give him some decent quality of live. He will have to work of course instead of being set for life but that's not a bad thing in any way.

Agreed. I just hope he gets the help he needs..gets a coaching job..something with football because as he puts it...he really has no purpose outside of football because it's all he knows and even says he's as good as dead.

Scary stuff.

In the article it says he spent a lot of money on treatments to get back on the field.

I saw THIS a couple of weeks ago and was going to create a thread on it, but was too sad for him to do it.

He seems such a good kid and he was a model player the one year here. I remember the many visits he made to schools promoting reading and how he had joined an all-middle aged women's book club while he was a student at Georgia.

Why do bad things have to happen to such good people sometimes :(

His head was always in the right place and once he gets to the point where he stops catastrophizing the loss of football he will go on to do great things. **** happens to people in life.. some get devastating health news, lose a partner or a child.. others have to live through earthquakes or tsunamis.. none of it is fair.

He already did publish that one book (Magic Hat ?) and if memory serves right a second one is coming in 2020.

He just needs to realise that getting out of pro sports is not the end of his life but just the beginning of the rest of it.

Meh....the dude made over a million. If he's not ******ed then that is a lot of money.

Get your **** together man.

I have a friend that is an UGA graduate. He even had a bulldog named UGA. I used to give him a raft of crap about Georgia players, especially with the string of luck the Pats have had with Georgia players going back to Robert Edwards. But it was always in a kidding manner.
Now, after the past few months, I really feel bad for these young men.
Mitchell hurt and forced into retirement and he doesn't appear ready for it. Michel hurt early last year and missed some time. Wynn missed the year on IR. And now Andrews on IR. Mitchell and Andrews really worry me. Malcolm because he seems to be falling into a hole of depression and Bear because blood clots are life threatening. I hope that Malcolm can move on, he seemed like he could, but now....I just don't know.

A. After taxes, agent fees, etc. that number isn’t close to as high.
B. $1M isn’t that much money anyway.
C. It’s very possible that having this money as a young man contributed to this mind set to begin with.
D. It really is true that money doesn’t buy happiness. Mental health issues effect all wealth classes.

This ain’t it..stop thinking so black and white.

Depends on your point of view i guess. I have a friend with cerebral palsy yet he enjoys life to the max. Goes skydiving, traveling etc. Does Mitchell want to talk to him about getting a ****ty deal?

Bad things happen to everyone though. It’s an opportunity to see what you’re made of. Some people just don’t show others that bad stuff is happening to them or they don’t make a big deal about them.

Are you serious, dude?

Apparently you've never struggled with depression. Regardless of why someone feels depressed, it's an utterly crippling condition that I'd never wish on anyone.

I hope the moderators permaban you. What a despicable comment.

A house and the money he spent on medical to get back on the field....a million dollars is nothing...

Telling someone who's depressed or lost to just "get it together" is so simple minded. Never had depression or anxiety? I was lost after my father suddenly passed when I was 24. He was my best friend. But I guess I should have just gotten my **** together and the years of depression would have just vanished!

You're apparently not familiar with basic concepts of neurology and biochemistry.

Educate yourself before you make ignorant, insensitive comments.
