Hoyer Cut

I had hoped that the Patriots would keep Hoyer because QBs are so valuable and only having 1 backup is risky. Despite recent Patriots history and the tendency of the League to only keep 2 QBs, I was thinking that this year would be different. Oh well.

After all, it was just a few years ago the Patriots had 3 QBs on their roster (kind of) and didn't have a healthy QB to go and play the fourth game of the season. It can happen - and you're risking a lot if you get some bad luck. But it appears that the vast majority of NFL teams get away with this every year, so what do I know.

The assumption is that he isn’t ready to play. Why would forcing him on to the field change that?
I’m saying if you keep 3 because you want Hoyer to play if there is an injury and Stidham to develop you can still get Stidham plenty of practice reps.

The coaching staff assumes he is.

That’s the debate.
Do they think he is ready or are they taking the chance they won’t need him?

I think there is a better chance of that with Hoyer than Stidham, don’t you?
I honestly don't know. I've always been in the "Hoyer is ok" camp but Stidham has shown me something. I think he is more talented than Hoyer.

I have confidence Josh and Bill can get the kid coached up to do well if disaster strikes.

I didn’t see a QB ready for a real game.
Hopefully we never have to know.

The question is is if he has NFL starter ability.

If you can't do as well as Hoyer at this stage of his career, then you do not.

Coaching only does so much, even at QB.

Has Hoyer's locker been cleaned out?

The question right now is whether he can be a backup.

The jury is certainly out whether he can do as well as Hoyer.

If Bill thought Stidham was the next Ryan Mallet, I don't think he would have gone without Hoyer. Or even Brissett.

If you think they would have, we disagree.

Anyone who hasn’t already should read Mike Reiss ‘ Sunday notes column. His first note is about Stidham. Reiss is the most “connected “ writer around, so I feel his comments about Stidham are very telling.

He doesn’t know.
He did go with mallet as the backup so that kind of blows that argument.

How ready Stidham is to play in a real game is a guess at this point.

Sounds like Hoyer isn’t returning from that piece.

It was seven years ago when Brady was 35, but ok point made.

The Colts could use Hoyer for 2019/2020 QB support and training, they anticipate drafting their QB of the future in the 2020 draft. So they will pay Hoyer for 2 years guaranteed, more than the $1.5M/year the Pats have guaranteed him for 2019. That is why he is heading to the Colts, because the Colts have already flashed a "ballpark" amount at Hoyer's agent. And the Pats claw back the $1.5M in their 2020's salary cap I believe. It is a gamble by Belichick but he guessed the Colts would pay Hoyer. No-one wanted to trade for Hoyer because he would not report for his final year, and his agent made that known, because Hoyer knew he could get a 2 year deal. Hoyer will not make that level of salary in retirement - he is getting the goods while the gettings good. ;)

Let’s not sell Jacoby short, he may be their guy.

Might be or might not. That is not relevant to Hoyer. Either way, the Colts want Hoyer as a player/coach for 2 years. Hoyer is 34/35 years old, so 2 years is reasonable. I think the Colts are making a smart move, for once.

PS Look at the Colt's salary cap space for 2020 - pr0jected at >$100M. Without Luck to sign to a big QB contract, what is $2 to $4M for 2 years for Hoyer? Smart move by the Colts IMO.
