Extended Season Soon

NFL preseason expected to be shortened, with expanded playoffs likely | Boston.com

Expanded season but likely in Post Season Games. Getting closer to Multiple Super Bowl Games.
Yeah, saw a PFT article yesterday about this. Soon the playoffs will look like the NBA and NHL where sub-.500 teams making it in is commonplace.

The idea of the bye only being for the team with the best record rather than the top 2 teams does have a bit of merit I guess. But I don’t want to see an NFL that mimics the NHL where regular season also-rans are consistently in the Super Bowl or even win it. And the idea of a Monday night wild card round game is just preposterous on its face. 1:00 / 4:30 / 8:00 on Saturday and Sunday is the only fair way to go.

Ick.

But an expanded set of playoffs almost certainly would be more palatable to players, given that players would be asked to play only two additional games.

Under the proposal, seven teams in each conference would qualify for the postseason instead of the current six. One team in each conference, rather than the current two, would receive an opening-round playoff bye. That would make for six first-round playoff games leaguewide (three in each conference) instead of the current four, one of which might be played on a Monday night. The two additional playoff games probably would be enticing to networks in the NFL’s next set of negotiations for TV rights deals.

The regular season is fine as is and the playoffs are perfect the way they are so naturally they need to be 'fixed' until they are broken, smdh. If they are that desperate for more product they should just add a second bye and increase the season to 18 weeks while leaving the game total alone.

Wild card weekend games are pretty boring as it is at times, dont even watch some or even wind up changing the channel as most wild card teams don't make it past divisional round or by luck squeaked into the playoffs so go figure so expanding it is stupid imo.

That doesn’t expand the season it just adds an extra game to wc weekend. Between a 2 seed and probably a .500 team.

And only a bit, especially since the teams with the 1 and 2 seeds can play very different schedules.

league. They are determined to kill a good thing...

Opens the door for 20-0!

The article title I s poorly written. While it does say the expanded playoff is likely to happen and the owners feel they can just do it without union approval, it spends most of the time saying many owners aren’t in favor of doing away with the preseason games without getting something back. That the owners appear willing to expand roster sizes and do away with MJ testing along with reducing the preseason games in exchange for the extra games.

Fortunately it also mentions the 18 games but players can only play 16 isn’t supported by either side.

Great let’s make it like hockey where half the league gets in.

Any setup where you have to go to school/work the day after the super bowl is not a perfect setup.
Think of all the partying the NFL would be creating by having SB on Saturday night. Bars would be full.
House partys would be consuming tons of NFL sponsored products like doritos, budweiser and tequila. Uber would be hiring 100,000 temps.
Plus a million people would't be calling in sick on Monday.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.

I think the NFL should just drop one pre-season game and leave all else alone. Post-season dilution, although small in this case, is still too much because it subtracts from the drama of each regular season game.

7th Seed teams if this rule had been in place since 2008, according to Pro Football Reference

2018: 9-7 PIT (vs. #2 seed NE), 8-7-1 MIN
2017: 9-7 BAL, 9-7 DET
2016: 9-7 TEN, 9-7 TB
2015: 10-6 NYJ (vs. #2 seed NE), 8-8 ATL
2014: 9-7 HOU, 10-6 PHI
2013: 8-8 PIT (vs. #2 seed NE), 10-6 ARI
2012: 8-8 PIT (vs. #2 seed NE), 10-6 CHI
2011: 9-7 TEN, 8-8 CHI
2010: 9-7 SD, 10-6 NYG
2009: 9-7 HOU, 9-7 ATL
2008: 11-5 NE, 9-7 TB

In 11 years, 4 NE teams would have lost byes due to this rule.

In 2008, NE would have gained that last playoff spot.

Maybe they would have qualified in 2002 as well. (Pro Football Ref stopped listing expanded playoff standings that long ago back, so I'm not sure.)

I hate the extra playoff team. Not enough reward for a great regular season.

Drop 1 pre season game.
If they need more product:
18 Week schedule with an extra bye
All Thursday night games are scheduled off the bye
Have more Monday night double headers (maybe once a quarter) Have the East Coast game start promptly at 7 with a West Coast game at 10.
