That must be why Shelton is taking first team reps and Pennel is taking 3rd team reps.

Shelton is a very talented and a great fit for a NT.
2015 NFL Draft Profile: Danny Shelton

Pennel is a JAG.
I see Pennel is going to be this year’s version of “Da Burkmeister” for me. Soooo, don’t disrespect Mikey P like that bruh...you don’t want those problems..

No I said he is a safety and safeties and linebackers have overlapping responsibilities but are different positions with different requirements.
Ok he's a coverage LB w a safety title.

No he’s a safety in a nickel base. This is like your Matt Lacosse is a wide receiver argument.
...which will have linebacker responsibilities.

Lets stop here.

OK, I would be shocked if Sam beat out King or Calhoun as a Ster.

I agree. It's just that I'd be equally shocked if he beat out any of the LB's for regular defensive snaps.

No. He is a safety. All safeties have responsibilities that overlap with linebacker responsibilities. It’s part of the position.

We are saying the same thing. Moving on.

I think there are pluses and minuses to all of the different defensive alignments. If you put a bunch of smaller fast guys on the line it makes it tough for the passing game, however it is easier to run against with a big line full back setup. If you put in a bunch of big guys they make it harder to run against, but easier to pass. Most teams are very one dimensional and only play one style well. San Diego comes to mind. I think BB tries to build a team that can do lots of things really well. So 4-3, 3-4, nickle, dime, will all be used based upon the team they are playing. That is why the Patriots try hard to get players that are smart and can do lots of different things.

No we aren’t because you are calling a safety a lb and I am calling a safety a safety. We are saying the exact opposite thing. But yes best to move on.

Yea he’s reeled me in before. He definitely sticks to his guns.
I'd rather deal with someone like that than a pushover.

IIRC you and I had a good discussion re: Patriots drafting WRs. It was good debate/discussion. Its all good.

not to cop out on my opinion, but once again it would be based on who we play that week. we play the titans without Henry so I don't know if how we come out this week is any use but we will be facing two teams with running qb and scatbacks so what we will expect in that scenario this year should become apparent. I doubt the giants put Barkley on the field the 4th game.

no, it is fun watching you two jerk each other. (only kidding)

Safeties play in the box. That doesn’t make them linebackers.

Not a traditional or historical size for a LB for sure, but the game is faster, more passing.

ILB: Zaire Anderson, Denver Broncos: 5-11, 220 pounds
Safety: Obi Melifonwu, NE Patriots: 6-4, 224 pounds

I am not sure that labels are important. Guys in the box that can tackle and cover, call them what you want. If Pennel and Shelton can clog the middle, then there are multiple ways to defend the edge creating more flexibility. BB signed Pennel early, probably with good reason.

I remember that one. I always appreciate a good back and forth with both sides stating their case.

Has Burk ever been a highly disrespected figure on this board? I'd say right now is probably the lowest level his stock has been during his Patriots tenure, and I still have him making the team.

Hes making the team. Hes no longer the shiny new toy. He has some durability issues but seems to me BB values him.
