Switch to 3-4 seems to be getting more official

Did Chung and Rodney have LB responsibilities? Big Nickel SS here has LB responsibilities and then some
No. They are safeties.
Every position has multiple responsibilities.

They very well could to maximize their strength at LB.

That looks like a darn good defense. Has the looks of a top 5 defense in fact.

Will be interesting to see how the playcalling will be divided. I could see BB calling most of the plays starting out. Then maybe have Mayo adjust into the role slowly.
My take on this is that BB will be HC and DC and on game days Mayo will call the plays.

I originally thought Mayo was just getting ready for insurance reasons. Coaches have missed a game or got injured during games before. But the more he does it the more it seems to be how it will work. This would mean BB can focus on both sides of the ball during the game still.
But during the week I have to imagine BB is the primary DC Mayo can't be ready for all that could he?

Calhoun is 6-4 25o. DE maybe but I don't see as a DT

I've seen him listed at 260. I'm just reporting what I think I saw on Thursday. It wouldn't be the first time someone that size lined up in that spot by a long shot. It doesn't mean he's a DT but it does mean he's seen as more useful inside than outside in some situations and you can't say that about all our edge rushers.

OK. I remember Chandler Jones lined up on the inside vs MIA in 2014 in a 3rd and long in that NASCAR package. Maybe he was doing that?

I think what we'll see is 1-5-5 alignments and 2-4-5 alignments in passing situations where we're doing everything we can to confuse the opposing quarterback. I think we saw some alignments like that in the Super Bowl.

Calhoun has been playing stand up OLB here.

Why do we still call 3-4 or 4-3 the "base D" when every team these days is in sub packages most of the time?

IMO, the coaching staff is building this D with the nickel package in mind first....

OK, I would be shocked if Sam beat out King or Calhoun as a Ster.

I see Sam as mostly a ST guy at this point, with some ability to be an emergency LB. But with the rest of the depth we have at LB, if we ever saw Sam on the field it would probably mean we've had a DISASTROUS injury season. So he either makes it as a Brandon King style ST linebacker, or he doesn't make it at all.

That's exactly what I'm referring to.

I don't think I can find a single example of someone actually doing this in the thread. We all generally understand that the sub packages are dominant these days.
