Brady contract situation (Merged - UPDATED:Deal Done)

Quantum - I believe you are double-dipping on the SB cap hits for 2020 and 2021. Why do I say this? Because the original report was that Brady's SALARY was going to be $23M in 2019, $30M in 2020, and $32M in 2021. We know now that the $23M is not SALARY, but actual CASH that Brady will get. And we both know that's a huge difference. We also know that Brady's cap hit this year dropped by $5.5M, as you pointed out and that the $6.75M is the signing bonus pro-ration.

I contend that the $30M and $32M numbers are Brady's CAP hit for those 2 years, not his salary. I contend that Brady's cash (salary and bonuses) will be $23.75 and $25.75 respectively. I believe this based on the erroneous reporting that the $23M was Brady's new "salary"..
If the reports that the new money is $70 million over 2 years, then the $30m and $32m are base salaries. The cap hits would be $36.75 and $38.75 = $75.5 million, less the $5.5 of savings in year one equals the $70 million of new money. If the $30 and $32 were total cap hits, it'd be a 2 year $56.5 million extension.

I don’t think that it’s a fake contract. It’s just not guaranteed. If Brady plays poorly in 2019 he’ll have to renegotiate to stay on as Patriot in 2020. If he plays well, get ready for a $37m cap hit next year.

After Mahomes signs a 40m per year deal, we’ll call this cheap.

Taking the particulars of this contract out of the mix, what have the Patriots done in the past 5 years that would indicate a willingness to pay Tom Brady $30m and $32m a year, respectively, when Brady is 42 and 43?

Luuked - Curran's position was that the league offices were putting pressure on the Patriots to up Brady's compensation since Brady is still considered one of the best in the league and he wasn't being paid like it. It's a bit of a conspiracy theory, but I could easily see Goodell being bent out of shape over it..

I don't see what exactly the league office can do here. If they don't put the screws on teams like the Browns who kept hoarding cap space and picks while throwing entire seasons away while barely making the cap floor then why should this be any different. Except for "it is the Patriots".

I mean in the end it is Brady's decision alone what he takes in compensation. He if rather makes "only" 10 million leaving the team with more resources to surround him with e.g. more solid linemen to not get injured then that is a reasonable stance.

I think Curran is talking out of his ass here. If anything it would be the NFLPA who would have an issue with him taking less because it affects the various tags. On the other hand the team spends all their cap space almost every year and regularly brings in more depth level players than any other so the money gets used.

What have the Patriots and Brady ever done as regards his contracts that indicates they won't find a mutually satisfactory accommodation?

A bunch of mediots were trying to stir the sh*t this past week by suggesting Brady shouldn't show up - and just might not show up - for the Pittsburgh game absent a new deal.

This might truly be the most ******ed take I have heard in a longer time. The QB who has more money than he and multiple generations of his family could ever spend should not show up to play the game that he supposedly loves over a couple of million dollars that he doesn't need.

Jesus..

The team gave Tom an $8 million raise in 2019 and, in exchange, got some short term cap relief. (Of course, that "short term cap relief" means more dead money in the long term) However, the situation for 2020 really hasn't changed at all:

If Brady played 2019 under his old deal, then the Patriots situation in 2020 would be "we either have to work out a new deal with Tom, give him roughly $30 million (as per the franchise tag), or let him go."

Under this new deal, the 2020 situation is now "we either have to work out a new deal with Tom, give him roughly $30 million (as per his contract), or let him go."

Next summer they will be in the same boat as they would have been without this deal. At least this way, it shuts the media up.

2yr 70m extension. 8 paid this year (along with this year’s salary), other 62 next 2 years.

2yr 70m makes him highest paid qb (joint) in league.

Makes him a highly paid QB next year. Unless he redoes his deal again next year. haha

Just my guess but I think they keep pushing money down the road until he decides to retire.

It seems that way right now.

If they keep his actual salary low enough (I'm counting all real money paid, regardless of cap machinations) by lowering his number just a bit each year, they can actually bring his final number down over the course of the next couple of years. And, if not, it's not going to matter much, as long as the QBOTF is on a rookie level QB deal, or just above (like a Teddy Bridgewater type deal or a bit more), because the position will only give a one year hit to the team.

Not at Trent Williams’ $11mm salary.

That $13mm is offseason top 51.
Doesn’t include players 52 and 53.
Doesn’t include practice squad.
Doesn’t include dead money for waived players at cutdown.
Doesn’t include replacements for players on IR.

Teams need plenty of buffer for all those.

They could afford maybe a $4 or $5mm tight end or swing tackle. They’d have to do more maneuvering to afford $11mm.

They could easily restructure William's contract from the 10.85M salary by pushing money into next year..

9 times out of 10, they report the CAP HIT and not the New money. Been that way for the last 18 years..

I’m very upset about this.

Agree but I think he wants a new big-money deal.

I don't think a restructure is interesting enough to him to play in 2019.

Next year's cap is $30M plus any bonus proration; 2021 is $32M plus any proration. Let use a $21M bonus as an example (one of Miguel's examples). The 2020 cap would be $37M. And sure, we'd push money ahead again; this year it looks like we pushed $14M ahead.

Makes him a highly paid QB next year. Unless he redoes his deal again next year. haha

So, much for discounts.

Brady will get top dollar, $35M a year.

For cap purposes, I think we should expect a cap hit between $20M and $25M until Brady retires. For example, 2020 could have a $30M bonus, a $3M salary, and the $7M amortization from the contract just signed. On this next 2 year extension, the cap would be $20M.

Just my guess but I think they keep pushing money down the road until he decides to retire.
